  1. Looks really cool (but yeah that pipe makes me panic a little too)
  2. For what you'll do with it I would say no. Another thing is, stay away from RAID0 when building a NAS. If you use RAID0 and that one of the drives in the array dies, you lose everything. If you have more questions or if you want more recommendations, i suggest creating another topic for it.
  3. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (and I don't really need more atm)
  4. Not quite. Still 2 x 3.5" and 1 x 2.5" available
  5. That's a lot of drives in that case. Nice build but how the hell are you getting these SSDs out?
  6. Hardware CASE: Fractal Design Node 804 (SKU: 97165) PSU: Be Quiet! Pure Power L8 600W (SKU: 90532) UPS: Cyberpower CP1000AVRLCD 1000VA 600W (SKU: 36273) MB: ASUS H97M-PLUS LGA1150 (SKU: 97033) CPU: Intel Core i5 4570 @ 3.2GHz (SKU: 81329) HS: Some Cooler Master 92mm I had (Don't remember the model) RAM: ADATA Xpg V1.0 16GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 (2x8GB) (SKU: 93608) SATA / RAID CARD: Syba SY-PEX40008 (SKU: 53815) SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 120GB (SKU: 87760) HDD 1: 5x 4TB Seagate ST4000VN000 (SKU: 85198) HDD 2: 1x 2TB Samsung HD204UI (From old external HDD) HDD 3: 1x 2TB Western Digital WD20EZRX-00D8PB0 HDD 4: 1x 500GB Samsung HD502IJ (From old external HDD) Software and Configuration: My server is running Linux Mint 16 (non-server version). I am using sofware raid with mdadm. The 5 4TB disks are in RAID6 and the others are in JBOD. So before anyone say anything!! I know that this build is really...really overkill for a NAS. The reason behind this is that I don't have much room and that I will use this system to host some VMs as well. The JBOD drives will mostly be for backup and archive. It may also serve as Steam In-Home Streaming client for my TV. Total space: 24.5TB Actual Space: 16,5TB Usage: Storage...Basically everything I have is in there. Media PC Steam In-Home Streaming client Hosting VMs All my roommates are using it to backup series and movies Backup: I have an external 1TB HDD on an external site for really important files The backups are made manually atm to the JBOD drives from the RAID array Additional info: Haswell = No power!! Fractal Design Node 804 = WIN I didn't need the RAID functionnality on the PCI-e card because I only use it for backup drives so I didn't mind getting a cheap card 600W was really overkill...even if I add a GPU... I added a 120mm fan on the HDD + PSU side just to be sure Photos: From the NAS (The 640GB one is an external USB hard drive not included in the specs) From my PC The space between the hard drives on the right and the PSU was really tight considering I did not have 90 degres connectors on the SATA cables. Death from above TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT (and poor cable management) The SSD is in the front panel and there is still room for one more There are still 2 x 3.5" support at the bottom for HDDs Cheers Final result Final result #2 Final result #3
  7. I built my first computer (about 2000$ of stuff), I did it on the carpet without grounding myself...One of my gpu was not working...don't know why... Also, I forgot to put the mobo headers...once screwed it was completely bent...Still worked after I fixed it. Nice quality ASUS.
  8. I can add that I had two 500Gb WD Blue in Raid 0 for 5 years now and no issues. I used them as boot drive for 3 years before switching to an SSD .The performance was pretty good and they are dead silent. I would recommend.
  9. Hi guys, I am currently trying to plan a NAS build (with software RAID) with the micro-ATX form factor for a NAS PC. I already chose the Fractal Design Node 804 case for it and I will probably go with a i5 4670k CPU (I know it's overkill for a NAS but I will use it to host some VMs aswell). I am looking for a mobo that has 8+ sata ports on it with this form factor and I found the Maximus VI Gene and the Maximus VII Gene that is coming. IMO I really don't need all the other features that ROG boards offer. So, I'm looking for a Micro-ATX mobo, socket 1150 with 8+ sata ports and 32Gb+ max RAM. It also need to be somewhat reliable. I can wait for the new z97 boards coming up. I am also open to suggestions with a sata/sas controller (not too expensive). If you guys have an idea let me know. Thanks in advance
  10. Whoa thx guys that was fast. I don't have a warranty on the PSU anyways so that won't be a problem. I started to watch LutrOo's videos on Youtube and it's very interesting.
  11. Hi guys, I don't know much about cable sleeving but I would like to sleeve my pc's cables. I wanted to know if it was possible to make custom sleeving on non-modular PSU. I currently have a Corsair TX750 (http://images.hardwarecanucks.com/image/skymtl/PSU_review/TX750/CORSAIR-9.jpg) and I was not really planning on changing it. Also I wanted to know what are good starting points to know more about custom sleeving (where to buy stuff and tutorials). Thanks in advance.
  12. Damn I was not fast enough To access them from the Internet, I use LogMeIn Hamachi that creates a virtual VPN automatically. This way, you can access them when you are not at home almost the same way that you would if you were.
  13. C/C++/C#/Html/CSS/Javascript - Visual Studio Java - Eclipse Others - Notepad++ If you guys are doing a lot of C/C++ in Visual Studio, you should take a look at the plugin Visual Assist X. It saves lives (I'm not saying this to make any publicity. It's just a very good tool). I use it both at work and for school and it adds a lot of the refactor and snippets that are available directly in Visual Studio for C# but for C++ and it's fully customizable.
