  1. I'm considering upgrading my current 1080p 60Hz monitor that I use for gaming with something better. I like the appeal of running <60fps for smoother fast paced games, and I like the idea of <1080p because I'm really noticing the pixels in comparison to my laptop which is 2560 x 1600. However I don't think my GTX 780 will run most of the games I play at 1440p with 144FPS. There are lots of things that make a monitor better or worse, the details and jargon of which I know little about. But I can tell when a screen presents colours or contrasting brightnesses or blacks poorly, however I don't know which monitors will be better or worse at this. My current monitor is the Dell 2407WFP https://www.amazon.com/Dell-2407WFP-HC-WideScreen-Resolution-Monitor/dp/B000NKU5H0 So in short, could anyone please recommend me some monitors that are nice, or if you have some advice on what resolution and refresh rate I should go with please give me your 2 cents. What monitor(s) do you have? What do you like/dislike? How much should I spend, to get something decent (or better than I have) but reasonably cheap because I only use this for gaming. Additional thought: I am a music producer and would like to use this monitor as a second screen for my laptop when editing. My laptop is a 2015 Macbook Pro and I have thunderbolt and HDMI, or is it possible to connect to a monitor wirelessly? Would this affect my monitor choice? All advice appreciated!
  2. Hi all, I built my PC in 2014 with 1x stick of 8GB RAM with the idea that if I need more later I can add another stick of the same when I need it. Judging by my high RAM usage percentage recently in games I'm think it's time to upgrade to 16GB. Can I just by another stick of 8GB and chuck it in with the old one? Does it have to be the same brand/model etc? The kit I bought in 2014 is Kingtson 8GB KTH9600C/8G DDR3 SDRAM KTH9600C/8G and I believe it may now be discontinued. Do I need to get another stick of the exact same to run along with my old one, or should I buy whatever is newer which seems to be Kingston 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Single Rank Memory KTD-PE316S/8G? Will they run together? The latter appears to be AU$139 rather than the former which is AU$79. Any advice would be much appreciated James
  3. Thanks, when I finally get this sorted out I'll post an update.
  4. Plasterboard AFAIK. I had suspected the USB wifi adapter could be an issue, I'm looking into ethernet over power solutions now, but there is a huge price range from under $50 to over $150. How much cash is it worth dishing out for one of these?
  5. Thanks for referring me to that video, I expect that wireless could be an issue, BUT my laptop wireless gets in fine which is pretty odd.
  6. Why is it a problem in larger houses and with more stuff like lamps powered on?
  7. For some time I've been struggling with how to connect my gaming PC in my bedroom to the internet. Ideally I would just run an ethernet cord from my router to my PC but it's not possible for me to have the ethernet cord run through my lounge and into the bedroom. I've tried using this small USB wireless adapter to connect over wifi but I've had huge issues with speeds under 1kb/s and often it just won't transfer data at all (even though it registers as connecting to the network). Alternatively I've tried connecting my PC to this wireless extender via ethernet cord, and connecting to the network that way, but most of the time it won't even transfer data at all. My internet on other devices is fine; I stream HD video on my laptop while troubleshooting <1kb/s on my PC. I tried connecting my PC to a laptop via ethernet cord and using the laptop's wifi for the PC, and this worked surprisingly well, but it's not a feasible way to run things all the time. In an old NCIX video Linus talked about "ethernet over power" (I know it isn't the same as power over ethernet), where I can plug something like this into the wall at both ends (next to my PC and next to the router), then connect to the PC and router to these plugs via ethernet cords. What should I do? Ethernet over power sounds like a good way to go, I know it isn't as fast as wired but my internet here (in Australia) isn't the greatest anyway, right now I'm getting 1.75 Megabytes/sec which is about the best I ever get. Affordable / simple recommendations?
  8. Cheers I'll do a check. I have a mac I could try it on but not another PC. I've tried messing around with different bindings to no avail, but there's no harm in checking again. If this persists I'll check the status of my warranty.
  9. Hey, my lovely Logitech G700s has an issue where two of the thumb buttons aren't working The two upper thumb buttons (g6 and g7) simply aren't working. Mechanically, there is nothing wrong, but nothing happens when I press the buttons (regardless of what I map them to using macros in the Logitech software). I've tried turning the mouse on and off and rebooting the software, drivers are up to date and nothing seems to be obviously causing the issue. I use Windows 10 but had the same issue for a long time with Windows 7. The issue has been happening for a long time, and somewhat temperamentally. I could occasionally fix it (by rebooting the software and other stuff I mentioned above), but recently nothing will fix it. I've googled the issue but nobody else seems to have the same issue. Help?
  10. Hi all, I'm looking for a usb hub with audio jacks so I can access these ports from my desk instead of climbing under to awkwardly reach my PC. The aim is to replace the hub in my keyboard that I use, since I'm getting a new keyboard and <80% keyboards with usb and audio hubs are hard to find. I often plug speakers in and out via a 3.5mm audio jack, I also often use USB for my headset and memory sticks / any extra stuff I end up using. Any recommendations for USB/audio hubs? I've heard it's better to get a powered hub. The trouble is finding one that does audio too, would I be better of getting a USB to audio jack adapter separately and just plugging that in? Braided cable would be awesome but you can't always be that picky.
  11. Bump. I don't have any suggestions but I'm keen to look for a monitor similar to this.
  12. Thanks for the recommendation but Corsair's Strafe is no smaller than my keyboard. Any 80% (or less), cherry brown (or equivalent), mechanical keyboards with USB / audio pass-through? I might end up getting a small keyboard and a separate USB / audio hub. In that case, any recommendations for hubs?
  13. I'm not so keen on the Cherry MX reds in the K65. The CM quickfire looks good buuuuut... Anyone know any more keyboards with integrated USB / audio pass-through?
  14. Thanks guys I'll a look at these, but if you have more suggestions keep 'em coming.
  15. Thanks but I can type just fine on my membrane-key laptop
