  1. For a case I am thinking Phanteks Enthoo 719. I am leaning heavily towards doing a custom water cooling loop, and that case looks like an easy one to make sure everything will fit with room to spare, including as much radiators and fans as I could ever want. I would be interested in a Mid-Case that has plenty of room for radiators and a reservoir etc. if anyone has any suggestions. I like Dizmo's suggestion of waiting for a 4000 series CPU, will wait for reviews to see if I go 4700x or up to 4900x. Any suggestions for motherboard? I have used Asus for years and have been happy with them, although the PCs I have built at work have mainly used MSI motherboards and I have had no issues with those either. I do like the Livedash OLED built into the ASUS Zenith motherboard, does anyone offer a similar feature in a non-threadripper motherboard?
  2. I'm going to wait to purchase anything until I see reviews regardless, so I'm not to worried about buyers remorse. And I figure they will be sold out for a little while upon release so I will definitely keep an eye out for the 4700x reviews as well. I'm just trying to start getting a build together so I can start buying the parts that won't change regardless such as a case, cooling, RAM, NVMe drive etc.
  3. Budget (including currency): None (Each part must make sense, no overall budget) Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Star Citizen, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Assassin's Creed, most other modern games. Also planning to use for mild machine learning in C# with a custom application Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): With the announcement of the 3090 I am ready to finally completely refresh my 2013 computer. I plan on keeping the 850 EVO and FireCuda, but I am open for suggestions there. Overall here is what I know I want: 1) Ryzen processor, best one for gaming 2) Motherboard that can handle the Ryzen processor and 3090 3) 32 GB ram minimum, thinking about going 64 just to future proof 4) Nvidia 3090, because why not Outside of that, I am thinking of switching from the Noctua to an AIO cooler or maybe a custom loop that can do similar cooling capacity but without all the bulk on the motherboard Case wise, it goes under my desk so I don't need anything too flashy, just if anyone knows of a good solid case that has room for the 3090 and some radiators Overall I plan on keeping my peripherals, just looking for the actual PC build itself. Biggest question is which Ryzen processor should I go with. I have been Intel for years, but it has been looking good for AMD lately and I am just not sure where the best bang for the buck is in the Ryzen world right now.
  4. Thank you very much, after comparing those I ended up going with the GP73, and on Amazon for only a couple hundred more I got it with 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.
  5. Ah OK, no, my work involves coding so I don't think my dark IDE theme requires more vibrant colours lol. I am fine with a TN panel or a decent IPS, although I am spoiled by 120 hz on my desktop, so I would prefer that all else being equal.
  6. Perfect. I noticed that you simply stated that I should use whatever case suits, but any recommendations on cases with decent airflow and allow for large numbers of drives? I had been looking at the Silverstone CS380 but it didn't get great reviews on Newegg. As I mentioned in my first post, if this ends up being quiet enough I want to stick it right behind the TV stand so that I can wire it directly into the router. If it is a bit noisy that is fine as well as I will stick it with my gaming rig, but then it will require wifi.
  7. I am in Rhode Island, USA and I typically make my purchases on Amazon or Newegg. No preference on weight as I only use this on tables and don't tend to carry it anywhere outside of my house. Don't really care about RGB either way, certainly not going to spend more to get RGB all else being equal.
  8. Great, this is exactly what I was looking for. Main reason for picking the PSU that I did was that it was a reputable brand seeing as how this will need to run 24/7. That said, any reviews on BitFenix as I do not recognize the brand, although with that price difference I could buy 2 and have a spare lol. My goal is for this machine to be primarily dedicated as the Plex server and also hold a secondary NAS to backup some files to, so if the RAM will not effect Plex or Handbreak then I agree I should drop it down. I wasn't sure how important CPU speed and RAM was for handbreak and Plex's encoding the video at playback. I do expect that once the server is fully up and running there may be 2 to 3 video streams coming off of there simultaneously.
  9. I already have an SSD in the laptop, I made that upgrade a few years back. This is a laptop that I purchased back in 2010, is everyone here really saying that in 9 years there has been no worthwhile improvements in laptops? Looking into the y530 and y7000p they both appear to have 1050 ti's on newegg and I was unable to find them on Amazon. Alternatively it appears that the Dell Gaming Laptop G5587-5859BLK-PUS G5 - 15.6" on Amazon is the same price but has a 1060 max Q. Not sure what the comparisons are between 1050 ti's and Dell's proprietary Max Q 1060s so I'm not really sure how to compare these. This is why I posted here. Quick note, I am a Ph.D. computer scientist and a Director of Technology who has built 3 gaming pcs and 3 servers, so feel free to give me good comparisons I can dig into. I just find Newegg and Amazon do an awful job of allowing laptop comparisons so that I can get a grasp of what is going on. I figured that asking here would have people who know laptops much better than I do and could point me in the right direction so that I don't have to spend days reading reviews and spreadsheeting features.
  10. I have formatted several times. While I love Windows 10, it is continually installing a graphics driver that is not compatible with the custom ATI Mobility HD 5730 that is in the laptop. Once that happens I get nothing but a black screen outside of safe mode and I need to waste time uninstalling and reinstalling the proper graphics driver. I have tried stopping that update in multiple different ways and yet Windows seems to ignore all of them and force that driver through just to spite me. That said, the laptop is up their in years anyway, and as I mentioned, thanks to the bad keyboard driver, I can only type on it with a USB keyboard anyway or typing passwords and coding is incredibly frustrating thanks to skipping or duplicating letters. This is further compounded by the fact that the HD 5730 isn't a great graphics card for modern games as well so I am looking forward to upgrading that as well.
  11. Hi All, I posted this on reddit a month ago but got no responses. First time building a server for Plex and just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something that would improve the specific use case. I am planning on building a file server to host my Plex library instead of having it on my high end gaming desktop. My goals for the build are as follows: Power Efficient Should be able to ingest media and run it through handbreak Storage, lots of storage Quiet, if it is quiet it will be in the media room in order to direct cable into the wifi, otherwise I will need onboard wifi to put it in a location where noise doesn't matter. I am planning on running Unraid as the OS, but if Windows or another Linux distro will perform better I am open to suggestions for that as well.
  12. Hi All, I am looking to finally replace my old Asus N61JQ because Windows 10 has failed horribly on it forcing me over to Linux which is really crimping my gaming and remote access for work. I already have a high end gaming PC I built with a 5930K and 1080ti, but I would like a laptop I can comfortably work from and game while I am away from my desk. I would like to spend around $1000 but that is flexible and weight doesn't matter. Battery life is also not critical as I always plug in my laptops when in use outside of a few minutes at a time. Gaming wise, I play everything from Star Citizen down to Crusader Kings 2, and while I don't expect to be able to play the high end games on max settings, I would like to comfortably be able to play modern shooters and the like on medium settings if possible. Recently I have had bad luck with Dell customer service so I'm not a huge fan of them, that said my N61JQ has also had a keyboard driver issue causing key duplications ever since I got it, so not sure I'm thrilled with them either. If they are the best in the price range then I will take another chance with them.
  13. After first getting a Not Ready, I fully reinstalled the drivers, reconfigured SLI and rebooted the system. As a quick side note SLI was basically not used at all for this test with GPU2 never going above 11% power.
