  1. On Black Friday I bought a few new components for my new PC to complement the other stuff I had been saving for. Bought an Asus TUF Gaming X670e-Plus WIFI, 32 GB of Corsair DDR5-6000, Ryzen 5-7600X,among other things. Out of the gate I had a few issues with the memory as it wouldn't work at 6000 without varying 30-600 second post times. At 4800 it seemed to work normally, but I didn't pay for 4800. I ended up sending the memory to Corsair and they swapped it, although it took a month. Got the memory back, installed it and it's been good until yesterday my design program told me that I only have the minimum amount of RAM (16 GB) and it would recommend 32 GB or more, which is odd because I frequently use it and hadn't seen that message before. I looked in and the AuraSync was working on both modules normally so I fired up CPUID and sure enough it reported that only 1 module was reading. Ok I thought, maybe its loose. Opened the case press the lever back to remove the memory and it falls. The side of the DIMM slot broke and it doesn't securely hold the memory now. Called Asus and the agent said to send to them, if it's fixable it'll cost $200 or they'll charge me $300 for a new one if it's not. My first thought was to grab crazy glue and try to reattach the broken piece even if it worked but I couldn't remove the memory in the future. Then I thought I should ask the forum.
  2. I use a Mediasonic Probox H82-SU3S2 8-Bay which sells for $400 CDN on AMAZON. The easiest way to connect is with e-sata cable and an Intel e-sata card because it supports multiple hard drives on a single e-sata cable. Using dynamic mode in Windows (Linux is an option) getting any level of RAID setup is easy. Using 20 TB HDDs you can have up to a 160 TB JBOD or 120 TB on a RAID 6. Smaller size 4x drive options are available too. Obviously this doesn't use any caching and although it may be possible with zfs or something else I have no experience with it. This is a pretty decent backup solution that sits on the desk. I currently use 8x4TB and while I don't need more space, I've thought about trying 4TB SSDs for better performance.
  3. The photographer we're using will photo and record the ceremony. However we're planning on livestreaming the wedding on Zoom as well. The challenge is the timing during Covid. Currently we're limited to gatherings of 10. This includes: -Groom -Groomsman -Groomsman Mother -Groomsman Aunt -Bride -Maid of Honor -Bridesmaid -Bridesmaid Mother -Photographer -Justice
  4. The Sony might be a bit out of my price point (expected, not actually). What do you think of the Canon EOS M50, although after more research it seems like the Sony a6100 is better. It seems pretty popular with YouTubers and some wedding photographers. I figure a shotgun microphone may be fine for us as there's only going to be 10 in attendance (thanks covid), so just the JP, Bride, and Groom, with some other things here and there.
  5. As Covid is still a thing that probably isn't going to slow down in British Columbia by my Wedding date in April. All but 10 people will probably have to attend via zoom. Thus I'm looking to get a camera and microphone that I can connect to the laptop I just ordered (I7-10750H, 16GB, 2070 MaxQ). I'm thinking of perhaps a Canon Rebel that can be put in place on a tripod and using the lenses get the best shots. I really have no idea what to use for the microphone. What can you suggest?
  6. The calendar app takes longer to add reminders, plus, they will notify you only once, with the default sound. So it's easily missable.
  7. Linus has complained a few times about the broken reminders on Android. While I don't disagree about the alerts being too easy to miss, on his Note 9 (also on my Note 8 as shown below). Moderators can pass this along as they want. The best way I've found: Open the Samsung Clock App. On the Alarm Tab. Tap the + Icon to add a new alarm. Tap the Calendar Icon just above the days of the week. Choose the day you want the reminder to happen. Name the Alarm with your reminder. Choose the Alarm Sound. Choose the Vibration. Tap Snooze, then choose repeat forever. Tap Save.
  8. I know we're only supposed to fill out the form once to get a passkey, but that was 3 days ago, and I have my spam filters turned off on this email account. Are you running a backlog?
  9. Okay, LMG recommends TunnelBear for VPN's. Except this doesn't work very well. As their website says, " You cannot use TunnelBear on your Kindle/eReader, Windows mobile devices, Apple/Android TV, gaming systems, or by manually configuring your modem/router." Well, that's exactly what I want to do, watch Netflix and Amazon Video from the USA on my nVidia Shield TV (which is crap, btw) or any other device. Many of the commonly available apps like TunnelBear require putting a specific app on your device. I just want to be able to punch in the router configuration, then enable the VPN when I want to watch something. Anyone know a good VPN to use that's not a mint?
  10. There are a few ways systems get compromised. Fishing emails, payloads, and Remote Desktop. The latter being the way some friends went down. The server was left on 24/7 and had RDP services running. In 3 weeks there was around 65000 attempts before they got in. Also in this case, they didn't encrypt any files, they just used WinRAR to create self executing executables with passwords on every file, then used SDelete to remove the originals.
  11. I support a small mom & pop sign shop (5 employees) as a hobby and only charge them for hardware purchases. A few years ago (2011) I built a Windows Server based on SBE 2011. I setup ADS, basically just to keep certain people from getting into the accounts. Besides ADS it's just a file server. It's got a 500GB SSD for Windows, and currently a 3GB RAID 1 (Windows Software RAID) (2 drives) for the data. For backup it's got two external drives on e-Sata (one takes an image of the Windows, ADS, and setup, the other backs up the customer files), of which I currently use Synctoy (manual backup every 2 days), I tried using the command line executable with Windows task manager to automate a daily backup but it always fails for some reason that Microsoft gives a generic message about. The reason I configured it this way was software RAID can be rebuilt from windows on any hardware, if the motherboard should need to be replaced. The backup is an exact copy of the data files, and I setup all the computers with a script to remap the shares if the server goes down and they plug in the recent backup drive to a workstation. Lately however it's been randomly locking up, mostly at night. I've replaced powersupply, eliminated all unneeded services, replaced mouse and keyboard, replaced RAM, etc. Prior to this server they had a Dlink NAS, which worked until they started wrapping vehicles and opening or saving files would almost kill it with the enourmous file sizes. The NAS was also a pain in the butt to try to backup files from. Now I'm trying to decide what I should do going forward. I'm considering just replacing the CPU/RAM/Mobo or trying to find a more commercial NAS that would fit the bill. My main problem with a NAS is you almost need to buy two, and just put one in the closet just in case there's ever a controller meltdown. Not a problem with a $200 NAS, but just to have a $2000 NAS sitting doing nothing, yikes. Other considerations are we are in a recession so money's tight, and I'd like to have it setup so the owners can take care of it should something happen to me. Scenario: -Existing customer files ~2TB, growing by an average of 1GB/day, sometimes as much as 30GB in a day if a vehicle is getting wrapped. -As some of the files can reach 30-40GB (wraps) I want a reasonably fast solution that doesn't take 30 minutes just to open a file (as the Dlink NAS did previously) -Should be able to add more storage easily. -User permissions, to keep the artists out of the accounts. -Be able to use an simple automated backup, preferably a duplicate of the original files, not a proprietary format. -Should be able to recover from a hardware fault within a couple hours or less. -I have no Linux experience outside of a gui, although I'm willing to learn. -Any suggestions on a backup solution that just copies the original file without storing it in a proprietary format. Any help is appreciated. Glenn
