By installing an HBA and letting the OS handle the RAID array. Last I heard ESXi does not support Software RAID. You would have had to use a different hypervisor like PROXMOX. If you did though PROXMOX uses ZFS natively so there wouldn't be a real reason to install FreeNAS.
If you want to tryout Ubuntu Server I have a tutorial on it. Just skip everything about configuring ZFS.
