  1. i was having a similar issue after i overclocked, ran some test and everything came back okay. id get a random black screen then it would come back even just web browsing. I even had my pc not wake from sleep requiring a hard reset. Was talking with a friend of mine and his new pc that he just built January 1 was doing the same thing the other day. The only thing i can think of that may be the cause would be a windows update that happened around the same time a few days ago. I also suspect windows because my icons were moved on my desktop again like a previous windows update caused about 6 months ago. it could also be a resolution issue between nvidia driver and windows 10.
  2. Hello. Your psu has no cost for me in the link. The psu is to me the most important component in a pc. It protect and powers all the sensitive components. Corsair makes the cs55m gold for about 100 dollars canadian. Not sure retail there. A good guide for a quality psu is to look who the oem maker of the psu is. Ie. Corsair uses channelwell, Enermax, seasonic as oem manufacturers. If you do a bit of research you will find who makes better quality psu. If your gaming the i5 6600k is all you will need. I7 6700k would be more powerful but unless you are rendering, video editing in real time, scientific research or anything requiring g huge io I wouldn't bother. You can get buy with an h170 motherboard but it will not allow for the best oc experience. The z170 is the go to for that. If you research the chipset you will see what one offered over the other. Pci lanes etc. If you are 1080p gaming you won't need anything crazy fast. But you mentioned not alot of money so there is no point in trying to build a 4k capable gaming machines as you would require a 4k monitor as tvs would have to much input lag a g sync or amd equivelant monitor will benefit for 60 fps gaming. All which cost significant $$$. I would see what you current pc up grade path could be and how much performance gain you can get before completely replacing your hardware. Amd zen and intel Kaby lake are also 2-3 months away.
  3. Happened to a buddy of mine. His hard drive failed so he left the 2000 dollar laptop at home. He had his desktop with him at school. Came home for holidays to find a bow flex in his room and his laptop had been thrown to the road without even questioning him.
  4. When teenagers go off to college and mom and dad clean out their bedroom and throw shit to the road or kijiji here in Canada. Some parents get excited about those things. New excercise room...lol
  5. Aida64 or Futuremark. Some sort of benchmark. Mem tests.
  6. Hopefully the seller hasn't done any poor overclocking and damaged anything. Seems like a good price if everything works. I've seen some gpu work perfect on desktop but as soon as they run 3d applications and games they take a poop. If you can ask to run some programs and games before handing cash.
  7. Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I mostly just read what people have to say. To start most part have been aquired or will be aquire at no cost or little cost. Some part are for future projects. So my idea or dilemma is I aquired a older pc from my father that he had sitting in his basement that I built him in 2008. The specs are: Core 2 duo e8400 Msi p43 neo 7519 4 gb kingston ddr2 667 GeForce 8400 le No hard drive as I took out his ssd for his new pc Cooler Master elite 100 case Apevia 550with power supply. So I have aquired another 2 gb of memory for a total of 6gb. The case is being scrapped as it has poor airflow and is very dated. I'm looking to upgrade it to a phanteks enthroo pro m acrylic mainly for its simplistic looking front and lots of cooling potentials. I'm also looking to change out the power supply to corsair cs550m gold psu. Both of these purchases are not set in stone but they are for future builds as well. Hard drive I have a 2tb nas drive I intend to use to start with. My idea is to move everything to this new case if ordered and build this system. The dilemma I have is the e8400 is only 2 core 2 threads and I will be using this a a duel boot windows 10 and amahi server for a media server and cloud storage. I'm looking to run plex media server on it as well. However now that this hardware is 7+years old you can find some decent core 2 quads for about 30 bucks on ebay. So I'm considering buying a q9650 or maybe a qx9650 all depending on price and availability. Now to overclockinget... I'm looking to do a fairly modest overclock. See if I can push the memory to 800 mhz or higher. Push the fsb to 1600 if memory can handle and cpu. Again this is old hardware. I'm not aiming for 4.3 ghz maybe just 3.6 or so. It will be cooled by air for the time being until I upgrade my gaming pc next year at which point that hardware will migrate to this case. I'm looking to have people chime in to get some thoughts on this as to the cpu upgrade it worth the bother not cost and to what degree the quad core will benefit in my application. I'm not familiar with how plex uses hardware or what kind of tweaking I can do to maximize performance from ram and cpu ie. Ratios and fsb clocking on this board. I'm not looking for comments like upgrade to i3, i5, i7. Amd blah blah. This pc has cost me nothing and at most will be 150 bucks for multi use parts. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
  8. Amd Cpu/Apu as of the last few years do not read temperatures like Intel CPU's do. AMD changed the algorithm for calculating core temps. They claim that the temperature readings will be inaccurate until the core reaches 45+ Celsius at which point the temperatures will become ultra accurate. I cant explain the logic behind it but there are articles explaining it. The only real software that will read correct temps for newer AMD chips is AMD Overdrive, They have also suggested core-temp as it will correctly calculate the temps. Amd overdrive may not be supported by your motherboard if it was paired with overclocking software...eg. Asus AiSuite 3. My suggestion is to start with these software programs, Always check you motherboard manufacture support page for latest bios fixes and bug reports. Also it is possible that you damaged the back side of the motherboard on one of the mounting posts, like scratched the coating of revealing the copper circuits creating a short. Also core temp wil show "?" periodically on a freshly power cycled pc or an idle pc that hasn't been under load in a while. Mine does the same, 860K, asus a88x plus, be quiet pure rock, i never worry about cpu temps even gaming. newer cpus are not like they were 5-10 years ago. alot newer instructions and fail safes. Best of luck!
  9. I have found success...Coretemp will record proper cpu temperature as well as the proper Tj.max. no i just need to find a way to have Nzxt Cam software pull temps from Coretemp dll files and i will be golden. Cpu stress test reads 40c as max after 10 minutes of max cpu load in BurnIn Test.
  10. Okay, that makes sense then I'm running about 10 degrees average above ambient temperature using Ai suite 3 which reads the sensor for cpu package and 8 degrees less for cpu socket but doesn't help me trying to set fan curves when 3rd party software won't read correctly. So do I rely on Ai suite and manually set fans to a constant rpm and deal with slight noise or is there a fix for this issue. Getting Cam or HWInfo64 reading proper temps. Just frustrates me spending $$$ to properly cool my pc under load and make as quiet as possible using fan controller and silent pressure optimized fans and airflow fans.
  11. @ziogref what does your fx-8350 idle at and is it over clocked. I know my old Athlon x2 4600+ idled around 38 and that was with a stock heat sink in subpar cooled case filled with dust that was 11 years old. God rest it's sole.
  12. It may be that it is running at 57c but it seems unlikely as even after general use and reboot into bios still reads under 35c where the temp monitors are reading well above around the 70c. I can't see it dissipating that much heat in 5 seconds to load into bios. The socket and board also don't read temps close to that. The HWinfo64 reads over 90c in fallout 4 but doesn't throttle the cpu back. I've also found other people reporting temps around 35c with stock cooler through Other temp monitors and Amd overdrive but these have been on other motherboard chipsets which leads me to think it's more of a calculation issue as Amd has changed how the cpu reads out thermals in the newer Kavari and Godavari cpu. The 7850 and 7870 are reporting this change. AMd has also told someone in another forum that Amd overdrive isn't supported on some boards the supply their own oc software. I do not want it for oc I want the temperature monitoring.
  13. System specs Amd 860k cpu Asus a88x plus motherboard Be Quiet! Pure rock cpu cooler 8 gb Adata ddr3 1600 (oc 2133) ram Zotac Gtx 960 2gb gpu Sandisk 240gb ssd plus Corsair tx650 Psu Nzxt s340 white case Nzxt grid+ v2 fan controller Windows 10 64 bit os This is my first post so I apologize in advanced for poor terminology or understanding. I haven't built a pic in over 11 years but that's like riding a bike so this has nothing to do with that. My problem is from a fresh brand new install of Windows on this build I have not been able to get correct temp readings. I have used HWmonitor, HWinfo64, Aida 64, nzxt cam and all are reporting idle temps anywhere from 57-73degree celcius at idle. Now I know this is impossible as bios and my fingers can tell the cooler is not hot, or warm, bios reads 28c at idle load in bios. I have tried amd overdrive to get the correct thermal margins from the cpu. However upon loading AOD my pc reboots. I have loaded asus Ai suite 3 and it records a cpu temp of 26-31c at idle and max 53c stress test and gaming on fallout 4 ultra settings. I have also updated to the newest chipset drivers, latest bios, and newest Crimson/catalyst software; which also will not load and states there are no configurations to change when trying to load catalyst. Probably due to using an Nvidia gpu and disable on die gpu. So to the problem, I either need to get overdrive to work on the a88x platform with my board to monitor temps or a way for Cam to understand the temperature readings so I can either manually set fan speeds and or have cam control them based on cpu temp. I would assume I have adequate cooling with case plus 4 fans and cpu cooler. Now I would have Ai suite 3 monitor temps which seems more realistic number but my motherboard only has 2 case fan headers one of which cannot control fan speed so one fan always runs full tilt also the two from case fans would have to be molex powered and run full tilt. I want quiet not helicopter loud. I'm not the only one reporting this issue with asus a88x boards and I don't think there is enough info given to understand why this doesn't work. I know the Apu temperature problem is real but most people have AOD working. Does anyone have some ideas or insight on this or a possible solution?? Thanks
