  1. I cant answer to many in-depth questions but I recently used an old pc with a q6600 and 8 gb of ram with an 80Gb hdd , as my pfsense router, as well as some Gb intel NICs and a Gigabit switch. Kept everything basic settings, and only added squid proxy mainly for the caching. As far as security, I can only imagine tat pfsense if done right is more secure than a standard router. There are some other Router OS' out there like m0n0wall , smoothwall havent tried or looked into them much. All in all I ave been happy with pfsense, had a little trouble getting it to recognize my wan (took a few restarts of machine and modem for it finally to pickup my IP) also for myself I am going to another gb nic and Ubiquiti Unifi access point and do away with my wireless router(even though its just acting as a access point now) . I will finish with saying that it has speed up my connection alittle mainly with the computer on wifi(only 2 in my house) before pfsense they would only get about 1.5-3Mbps (steam download ) now I see a consistent 5mbps no drops very solid connection. hope this helps a bit ,
  2. I am getting this error when trying to use promo code! I wanted to get the last one but only if I could get the $30 OFF any idea why promo code isnt working UPDATE JUST KIDDING GUESS i should read the full thread , coupon is dead
  3. Thats good to know, but I had to return a Mobo to Newegg cause I ordered the wrong socket type (OPPS!). but the standoffs I need arent regular standoffs( I have plenty of these). I am going to be using 30mm standoffs from board to mobo 1, then 60mm standoffs from mobo 1 to mobo 2. reason being Is i will be mounting a hard drive underneath mobo 1. then 60mm standoffs to clear the heatsink an I/O. I found these standoffs on Amazon for a fairly decent price. but still doesnt solve the problem of how to connect 2 standoffs into eachother.
  4. Not sure what you mean? I Have never used/heard of microcenter, but I will check that store out.( if thats what your referring too)
  5. Definately, I am excited I really didnt think this would work out, but so far it seems like its going to work. Have to wait for a return money from newegg to come back then I will order all the standoffs and hopefully find a way to attach standoffs to each other. depending on clearance height may have to get some low profile cpu heatsinks.
  6. No, 2 psus 2 mobos. Sry to disappoint. I would like to do the opposite actually split the one PSUs 24-pin then tie another 24 pin to the same PSU , Although I dont feel comfortable doing this and frying a moterboard , then having to buy more stuff. So I will keep it safe and use 2 PSUs one for each motherboard
  7. Hello all, I plan on making a custom case for my Xen and pfSense servers. Only the pfsense box has an HDD then then server is installed on a usb stick. My plan was to make it fit in my exsisting entertainment center , then took to Google Sketchup to see if it would even work. To my surprise everything seem to fit. I dry fit all the parts on to the piece of wood I was planning to use as the base, I had a motherboard that is the exact same as the board in my servers, but this one is a dead mobo so I am able to use it to line up holes. Plans mount HDD onto wood base use 30mm standoffs in wood to mount mobo 1 over HDD use 60mm standoffs to mount mobo 2 to mobo 1 mount PSU on each side of mobos cut out holes for PSU fan add 2 60mm fans for better airflow the whole thing will be surround by plexi glass Couple questions before I start buy the little pieces i need like standoffs. 1. What do I need to be able to screw a standoff into another standoff? (I have tried with some extra standoffs I have and they don't screw into each other) 2. Is it ok to cut any extra of the PSU cords that I dont need?(given that i cap or electrical tape the ends to make sure no shorts happen) 3. anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any advice or help, Bacon
  8. just some more info I also have 3x e6550 1x E7500 had the thought to buy a dual socket board but wasnt sure that was better than a single quad core. ??
  9. okey dokey, it was my first actual time overclocking a CPU, no problem to bring it back down.
  10. CRAP!!!! I swear I double checked intel's website, THANKS cant believe, well shoot I ordered that mobo this morning, guess that will have to be returned. Thanks I dont plan on running a raid on the Xen server the raid will be on the freeNAS machine , with the q8400 , and I think I have a raid card around here somewhere.
  11. So I have been messing around with FreeNAS and Xen Server, and am set on setting up this for simple files small amount of video transcoding if anything. I have some old server components that I was given to by work, and plan to use some then slowly switch it out to newer components. Xen Server - To run 1 windows 7 machine(used for work), 1 CentOS machine for Minecraft Server, and possibly a 1 maybe 2 more machines(I like to test stuff alot) i3-2120 -> came out of a vostros 200 machine (mobo died, tested Proc in another motherboard and it worked fine) 16 GB -> Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 16GB (new) ASUS H81M-K LGA 1150 Intel H81 -> not the best mobo, but works for mean time , I would like to get a mobo that has 32GB Ram Capacity (new) 550w antec psu used 2u rack mountable case (also got these from work they have no make/model number on them) 8GB Kingston USB drive (Boot Drive) (new) FreeNAS q8400 OC to 3.3Ghz 8GB of ECC memory ( used from work plan on replacing, it works but has to be quite old) not sure if better to use this or some regular non ecc memory until I can buy some new ECC memory I cant remember if the mobo is a P5KC or a P5Q , regardless not the best but works great, someone is using it as a PC atm , (upgrading them to a8-7650k, new mobo and ram) 8gb Kingston drive (boot drive) (new) 550w antec PSU used 2u rack mountable case (also got these from work they have no make/model number on them) Havent decided on the HDD yet , I want around 3-4 TB of storage, would like to do RAID 10 but seems abit to exspensive and I think a RAID 5 would be fine for my needs. Cost on drives I want to keep around $200. Like I said the NAS will not be used heavily, I may be able to get another i3-2120 would this perform significantly better than the q8400 ? I am getting more familiar with hardware but there is so much out there , I am prolly over looking something. I am just looking for some suggestions or advice on the equipment. Maybe there is something better out there that I am unaware of, particularly need some good reliable drives that wont break my bank account. Thanks for any help/info/suggestions Bacon8tor
