  1. I ended up going with the hp spectre x360 15-df1033dx. 15 in 4k screen with solid build quality, magnetic spots to put my pen (whether or not they were actually intended for that), i7-10510U, 16 gb of ram, 512 gb nvme SSD, and nvidia mx250 which I managed to pick up for $1000. I would have loved to get the surface book 3 but I could not justify that price tag (I got my old surface as a hand-me-down), and I did not really need the 16 series gpu as I don't plan on gaming much on this laptop (if I need portable gaming my old laptop still works with a 970m).
  2. I currently have a separate large laptop for productivity and a surface for taking notes/reading. The laptop is over 4 years old now (bought it early 2016) and the surface is a surface pro 3 which is over 6 years old. Both still work fine actually, but it is inconvenient having a laptop and a tablet, especially when my laptop is as chonky as it is (Asus G752VT). My laptop has decent gaming performance but given that I haven't really gamed on it seriously in a few years that has become less important to me. The ability to play less demanding games would be nice but not required as I could always bust out my rog laptop for that if I needed. I'd like to find a good 2 in 1 to replace my setup right now, but I want to see if there's one that fits what I'm looking for. -Wacom stylus support is absolutely required because high quality note-taking and document annotation is a huge part of what I'm looking for. Preferably I could use my existing surface pen but that isn't a requirement because I don't know how realistic that is. -A place to attach a pen to the laptop would be really nice. Not an absolute dealbreaker but could be a deciding factor -A large screen, 17in would be ideal but I would settle for 15in. -Preferably a ryzen 7 4700U just for the high quality graphics in their APUs, but I would also settle for an i7 without much fuss. A relatively high quality CPU is a must though for processing datasets (I work in data science) -In a perfect world I would get a 1440p 120Hz panel, but I would not have much issue decreasing that if it is not available.
  3. I had tried what was in the previous link you posted without any effect. The second link does seem to be exactly what I needed but I do not have any nv_backlight folder in /sys/class/backlight, all I have is acpi_video0 and acpi_video1, neither of which actually have any effect on the brightness. Anything I looked up for how to get nv_backlight there didn't come up with anything because basically everything I could find was related to the backlight issue but already assumed it was there. Other things have also mentioned gmux_brightness, but I do not have that folder either. I just updated nvidia drivers too to double check without success.
  4. That isn't the same issue as I am having. The function keys DO work on my laptop, it's the screen itself that does not respond to the changes. The brightness setting is getting updated, just the screen does not respect the setting. I had already tried those changes before anyways.
  5. I have an Asus G752VT laptop that I installed ubuntu on. The screen is stuck on max brightness, but the function keys for brightness and the actual OS settings for screen brightness work. Everything I've found online has been related to getting the software side working but for me it is the hardware that is not responding to the software changes. (e.g /sys/class/brightness/acpi_video0/brightness DOES respond to brightness keys) How can I fix this?
  6. Razer Blade stealth. I already have a somewhat ballin' laptop (Asus G752), but I'd like one that would be a lot more portable, though without compromising too much on power.
  7. Rig: i7-5820k @4.2Ghz Asus Strix GTX 970 16Gb DDR4-2133
  8. I am moving to college next year, so it will be very useful to have a small, compact rig for use in a dorm as an HTPC.
