  1. I bought an RX 580 while it was still going for MSRP. Lucky I did because now I can't even buy it. Speaking of VFIO, @D-reaper, would love to know how your experience/process was. Been meaning to do this for a while.
  2. Sorry to hear that @TromboneSteve. I personally have not streamed from Linux but have recorded several videos/screencasts using OBS. Has worked for me. However I must mention that I'm using GNOME in Ubuntu.
  3. Well yes. My point is we can still convey the same information without being discouraging.
  4. I'm in agreement with you. Linux isn't perfect at all. Having said that we should steer our conversations towards what we can do about it rather than what we should and shouldn't use linux for. Just saying, "so listen, you can't game on linux" for example just discourages a newcomer who may be an aspiring game dev or someone who may end up being a contributor to Linux.
  5. No doubt about it. But still being able to jump in to Linux without someone pointing our what you should or shouldn't do (and not providing any concrete reasoning) just puts off lots of beginners.
  6. So i was browsing my google news feed and saw this article that describes how Linux isn't for everyone. https://dev.to/developerbishwas/linux-probably-isnt-for-you-388d Can't help but feel this was targeted at a specific individual or entity. I started daily driving linux 6 years ago. If i had come across this as a newbie I probably wouldn't have started using it and probably wouldn't have a Linux admin and DevOps role I have now.
  7. I have an AMD 8850M on my laptop and runs games on "very low" settings. I managed to assemble a desktop PC but without a proper GPU. AMD's Polaris GPU can take my pc to overdrive. Here's the spec: Motherboard: Supermicro X10SRA CPU: Xeon E5 2658 v3 at 2.2 Ghz (12 cores Hyperthreaded) Storage: Kingston Hyperx 240 GB. Ram: Team Elite 2400 Mhz 4x4GB GPU : AMD Rx480 (If I win this giveaway). My CPU was head to head with i7 5960X on passmark. I can't wait to see what will the new GPU do to my PC.
  8. Yes. It works perfectly fine. Even in turbo boosting mode. Oh, by the way my PSU can support upto 1200 watts. If that rings a bell.
  9. I have a Supermicro Motherboard which has a 8 pin connector. I checked the manual and it says the 8 pin power connector is required for the CPU. However, the computer runs fine without connecting the power and only connecting the 24 pin power. Is there a nugget I'm missing? Does CPU need that extra power for turbo boosting or anything else?
  10. Try Engineering samples. You can buy Xeon E5s for about one-fourth the original price on ebay. They are (almost mostly) tested and work fully. I have one Xeon E5 2658 V3 and runs great.
  11. Hi, Does anyone knows if Boxing Day offers sales on PC components as well? Like the motherboards and RAMs. I've been waiting for a month now and I'm sick of waiting. I'm building a Xeon based Workstation. Thanks.
