  1. Hey guys, I need help with building a new server that I want to put all my files in and can access via the internet. Right now I travel between to states a lot and sometimes I want to access my files on my desktop at home but I can't. So I want to build a server that I can access from both my desktop and laptop 24/7. (Well I guess that's the whole point of a server.) Honestly I don't know much about servers and I don't have any spare parts lying around. (The only thing I have extra is a Corsair 500W ATX PSU, keyboards, mice and a screen) So I want to build something legit and secure even if it comes at a price. I'm willing to spend around $400-500 including OS and extra software (if stuff like antivirus software is needed or recommended). Both my desktop and laptop run on Windows 10 and I would prefer it if I didn't need to open a web browser and stuff each time I want to access my files. (Is that even possible?) Also would prefer a rack mounted solution because I will be putting it in a walk-in closet. (It has ventilation.)

  3. Well, according to you guys then, Linus's video is just blowing smoke up my arse, on how his 8 core rig, performed pretty well, not better, compared to the i7-5960X in the test bench they use. It's not like I'm not going to be edit videos or playing "triple A titles" on max settings. I just need to be able to run VR games at 90Hz. (So that's basically 180 fps together. If I'm not misinformed.) Also, why can't I just use this rig for like the next three years or so, save some money up so that I can get a Ice Lake (2018) or Tiger Lake (2019) rig in the future? The point is, DDR4 based hardware is still expensive for me and sure Nehalem is gonna 'suck' compared to Sandy, Haswell or Skylake but it will run VR right? (No one seems to be answering that question by the way.)
  4. Let's get a couple things clear. So you all think that VR and Gaming is fine 4 cores? You also think that a i5-6500 would suffice and that that is better? If you said "Yes" to the two questions, doesn't that mean that I should just find two Duo core Xeon CPUs and make my build cheaper because I want to build this on a budget? (I know that means I'm going to sacrifice the longevity of the actual PC and that I'm going to be using DDR3 RAM but kinda take in the fact that I also actually have to buy a Vive or Rift on top of this.)
  5. I see thank you. But considering the fact that I'm trying to make this thing on a budget would you still say the price/performance ratio is better with the Xeon all together as a build? And it's not like the Xeon won't be able to handle VR would it? (Well I'm hoping it would anyways.)
  6. The Xeon X5667 has a base core clock of 3.06 GHz but it can be Turbo Boosted to 3.46GHz. That's the equivalent of like a Core i7 4790 with 4MB of extra cache. Tell that that isn't bad.
  7. Hey Guys. A while back on Dec 1, 2015, Linus made a video about "Under $150 Budget Gaming 8 Core CPU, Motherboard & 16GB RAM". And I thought is it possible to apply this idea/concept to build a VR gaming PC? The only problem is I know close to nothing about server grade hardware and I was hoping I could get some help. The idea is mostly the same. Find 2 quad core CPUs, motherboard and RAM for cheap Get the other stuff like power, fans and what not. Install a modern GPU (I'm thinking of either a GTX1060 or GTX1070) Enjoy VR! Here are some things that I would like to improve on compared to Linus' build. Hopefully find a Xeon CPU and motherboard that supports DDR3 (It can be a bit more expensive than Linus' build) A motherboard that has more than 1 PCI-E slot. (Hopefully PCI-E x16 too.) Build a custom case so that the whole rig stays together. Right now this looks like one of the most promising options I have. Motherboard: ASUS Z8NA-D6 (ATX Form Factor) CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5667 (Quad Core, 3.06 GHz, 12MB) RAM: DDR3-1337 ECC 2x 8GB (16GB) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 PSU: 700W 1x 512GB SSD, 1x 3TB HDD + Bluray Drive, USB 3.0 Expansion Card, Sound Card + Custom Build Case (Made out of Acrylic? Not sure.) Any input or suggestions are welcome and I will probably make a build log if things get interesting

  12. I need you all to teach me a bit about graphic cards. This is my current setup. Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme4 CPU: INTEL Core i5 4460 Memory (RAM): ADATA AX3U1600W4G11-DD (DDR3 PC3-12800 4GBx2) Power: CORSAIR CX500M (500W) GPU 1: NVIDIA Quadro K620 (2GB) GPU 2: Palit GeForce GTX750Ti StormX Dual (2GB) Case: ENERMAX Fulmo Q ECA3360B-GT Storage: TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 (1TB) OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit I use this PC to do both gaming and content creation (Adobe Creative Cloud). Now recently, I tend to do more gaming and I felt that the 750Ti isn't enough for the high end games (CoD:BO3, Fallout 4). Also, I'm really interested in VR (Oculus, Vive) Technology both as a gamer and a student (developer wannabe). So the most easy-to-go option for me is buying a GTX970 as that will probably the only card I can run on this setup without changing the power. (I know it's barely cutting it and I probably will upgrade the power later on.) Now the main question is, whether after upgrading to a GTX970, keeping the Quadro in the system is still efficient when doing content creation (and maybe graphics processing on the VR stuff too?) Since if the GTX970 is just plain straight better than the Quadro at content creation too, having the Quadro in the system will just consume more power for no reason and it would be better, in means of power consumption and system temperature, to take the Quadro out.
