This is an amazing read and an interesting development that I would encourage everyone to look at: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2018/05/04/gpp/

I think my favourite line however is this:

So, the GPU brand should be clearly transparent – no substitute GPUs hidden behind a pile of techno-jargon.

This is just so rich on so many levels...

For one, it reinforces the idea that it seemed they were trying to convey with GPP; that the market doesn't consist of 2 or more viable options competing with each other (nvidia, AMD, etc.) but that it consists solely of the one true GPU (nvidia) and shitty knock-offs pretending to be as good.  Of course this is just my impression so you're free to disagree but I really can't read this any other way.  The arrogance is astounding.

The second issue I have with this is the mind-boggling hypocrisy.  I'm sure everyone is well aware of the alternate 1030 card with considerably different specs at this point, and yet somehow being sold under the same name.  I don't think there's a better way to describe this than "substitute GPUs hidden behind a pile of techno-jargon".  In my opinion, this is actually the worse of these two evils because it can directly impact the consumer.

IMO GPP was disgusting on many levels and I'm very glad that it's dead.

One of the commenters on that page makes a good point imo.  The point of GPP was to get partners to rebrand, which they've now done.  If those partners don't choose to revert to their old branding, then nvidia has totally gotten away with this - it likely won't be investigated, and they get to have their cake and eat it too, reaping the benefits of a separated brand while not having to dish out any of the perks they agreed to in the original deal.

Of course it remains to be seen whether the partners will revert their branding or not, but it's an interesting thought.  Perhaps they even were planning this all along.

I guess Cell wasn't able to absorb the androids after all...

Since this is dead... I wonder if any of the brands might let the contract slip out and file a lawsuit due to lost revenue and potential expenses required to "rebrand" AMD GPUs. How much did ASUS have to pay to get their AREZ or whatever it's called?

That would make sense on one level, but I think it's safe to say that the brands who jumped on board to begin with are obviously wanting to be obedient to nvidia and so probably wouldn't turn on them now.  Not to mention if they were to do that, I think it would be possible for nvidia to "attack" them in one way or another legally and "legitimately".
