  1. yhea, stay with what you have. discover steam and good games, you'll have a lot of fun! and at 14 you still have the time to do some gaming and got to school
  2. yhea... good build BUT do you really need a graphics card like that? i mean if you just want to run minecraft you could put that gpu money towards a better cpu with integrated graphics, for example. You would run video editing software a LOT better. Although if you want to run something more gpu intensive than minecraft, stay with what you have.
  3. well, it really depends on what cpu. There is a limit of how sucky the cpu can be without "bottlenecking" (in this case it's not technically bottlenecking but let's call it this) hindering all the gpu's capability. A GPU will use a certain portion of your cpu's capability, and not having enough cpu capability can hinder the performance of your overall system by not allowing your gpu's to reach full potential. But there is no way i can help you in finding about this. I don't think you can find how much cpu percentage per core a 6870 uses on the internet, so what i suggest you do is try one of those and see how much cpu it uses, then scale it up to 6 times. Taking in account the cpu you use to test will certainly be more powerfull than the one you will be using, try and make a better estimate of how much cpu you need. then make a decision! (if you don't understand, just ask me questions, i'll be there for a few more hours, i got a lot of work to do
  4. yhea, in that case they are HD 6870's, and i was talking about F@H. I'm pretty sure it could work. But you bring up and interesting point, since nobody really experimented with this hardware i think, OP would be going in this "never explored before" terrain where anything could happen since it was never tested out by the manufacturer that Linus talked about on the 30000 $ rig teardown stream. He could bring up wierd problems doing his project indeed i think!
  5. nooooo no no no no no no. you could run the six cards with a single core cpu, that's not a problem (just make sure it's got enough pci-e lanes though). it's just that the cpu will use as much cores (or threads) as it can equally. so the the folding power coming from your cpu (and your cpu only) is multiplied by the number of threads
  6. well, i don't know much about bitcoin mining and such but i know folding at home is using these cores. (according to the F@H website: "V7 was designed to utilize multiple CPU cores with a multi-cored CPU slot (formerly SMP slot) and a GPU slot for each supported GPU. "). but you can still use a single core of your cpu, after a bit of configuring (again according to them. i can't link to another website here it would be breaking the rules). so it's your choice really, any cpu will handle it, but each thread added will multiply the folding performance from your cpu.
  7. so what your'e saying is, when you have your ram sticks in the 2 and 5 configuration, when windows sees 8gb dual channel, other programms see 16 gb dual channel (or just 16 gb in general)?
  8. hmmm, wut? i wonder (in the 2 and 4 config) if it's just windows registering only 8 gb or if you actually only have acess to 8gb. seems to me it's just windows. Maybe try finding out how much RAM other programms see in the 2 and 4 config. Like razer cortex or systems requirements lab.
  9. F@H uses all cpu cores, so using a pentium (which has 2 cores) is not the best. try getting at least a quad core. something you might be able to find is a good deal for a used xeon...
  10. wait.is that system your current system or the one you want to upgrade to?
  11. well, yes, but you can block most games at 75 fps so this isn't really a problem...
  12. wow, this is quite a hidden gem! i would personnally get the black one, but poeple seem to prefer the white one....
  13. hey, i'm going tu university next year and i was accepted in computer engineering. But i don't really know what you do in computer engineering. What do you study in this programm? is it fun/cool/interesting?
  14. i think your best bet would be getting 2 750's to get a total of 1500. (you may want a bit morepower that just the total power of GPU's...) you could get two EVGA's 750 B2 for about 130 pounds. i think it would work and since they are semi modular you get enough 6 pin connectors to power everything!
  15. hem... 6x6870's ? where are you getting those? anyways their power consumtion at load is about 250 watts... no power supply can provide enough power for this!
  16. (scroll down for tl;dr) So next year i'm going to university in another country and i will have move into tiny room. That said it means i can't bring my gaming tower pc. It also happens that i need a laptop to take notes since the one i'm using right now is going to die soon (i REALLY don't trust it, has a lot of issues and it's 8 years old). So i thought i might buy a laptop to both suit my needs for gaming, and note-making. I really don't know much about laptop specific specs (gpus and cpus and SODIMM ram) and i don't really know what's a good deal or not. So i ask: do any of you have a reccomendation of a laptop (or laptops) i can use for gaming as much as notemaking (so no monstruous watercooled giant desktop-replacer please) that is in a budget between 800 and 1500 USD? I don't mind running games that aren't on ultra-high 60+fps, but i still play AAA games like the witcher 3 so i need a minimum gaming power. tl;dr : I need a laptop to take notes and do some gaming on the most recent games (doesn't have to be monstruous 100 fps on ultra-high though) reccomendations? (between 800-1500 USD) Thanks!
  17. It does, but not that much. The advantage of having a 140 mm fan is that you can make it run slower while moving as much air as a 120 at full speed. that means a quieter fan.
  18. it isnt your hard drive or your power supply. These two components don't affect your in game performance (if you have a powerfull enough psu, which you have) First, why do you think that if linus made a build with it at some time that it will run games well? I mean, it's an APU! If you want to get good performance in games, go with a graphics card, or your pc will run "slow"! Also, your ram may be a bit better but your'e running a single stick and the example you are talking about use two. That means dual channel vs single channel. That's probably why your game runs slower. Lower the graphical settings if you want to play, or get a gpu, its as simple as that!
  19. The xeon your'e talking about is basically a locked i5. It will be compatible so i don't think grabbing an i5 is a good idea if you can get hold of that xeon.
  20. it doesn't have the same effect as someone screaming "YOU ARE AN IDIOT" in your face though...
  21. hmm. The 5820 will give you a little more overal computing power with it's 6 core so if you do any rendering or other cpu intensive tasks that use all cores you will see an improvement there over the 6700. the 6700 has a little more performance single-core wise and most games use only 2-4 cores. So the 6700 will be better for gaming. And having a big hdd is quite nice, so for gaming i would prefer the i7-6700k build. for editing its the other one. hope i helped!
  22. interesting. i'm following this post i kinda need it too now...
