  1. What's the best (most powerful) gpu I could put in my pc with an i5-6600k? I usually run my games at 3440x1440p Thanks for the help
  2. I am going to get a pair of wireless over ear headphones and I've narrowed down to either the pxc 550's or the hd-1's. Which one is better? I know the hd-1's are more expensive, but the pxc 550's are newer. My main concerns are sound quality, comfort, and noise cancelling, in that order. What do you guys think?
  3. I've been wanting to build a super simple NAS to basically work like a usb drive (for transferring files quickly between say a desktop and laptop). Are there any (relatively inexpensive) mini-itx motherboards (like lga 771 for instance) for xeons? I have a plan for a NAS already but it has an e-atx board, which is just way too big for me. I'm trying to stay in the older generations to save money, but I don't mind spending ~$80 for a motherboard + cpu combo (the build I had in mind had dual xeons and the mobo for $50). Thanks for any help!
  4. You got me wondering now, since I have a pair that I bought used, if they're legit or fake. Is there any way to tell? They sound great so it doesn't really matter to me, but still, you made me curious.
  5. Quick update: just checked eBay to see if they still had the ie80's used, and there weren't any under $100, but there is a brand new pair for $220 on there.
  6. I personally love the sennheiser ie80's, and a used pair of them cost me like $80 on eBay. Headphones that originally ran for $350, and they're on eBay used in very nice condition (I had to buy a new cable for mine but that was like $8) for around $100. If you don't want to go that route Sennheiser in general has the sound signature your looking for from my experience. Check out the iem list in the headphone sub-forum to see what they suggest for your price point.
  7. My best guess is that everyone grew up using a standard mouse, and not many people are willing to change. It's a good concept that can never really be implemented sadly, but it is what it is I guess. Kinda like ergonomic keyboards vs standard keyboards. People choose what is made and what isn't based on purchasing decisions.
  8. You should try to look into the used xeon market, as you can get an 8 core @ 3Ghz for like $20 and a board for like $30. Linus made a video on it a while back if your interested.
  9. If you are only using the system in 2 - 3 day intervals, it would probably help to turn it off, especially if you are running an overclock on your cpu or gpu. But if you use it every day, you might want to experiment putting the system into sleep mode to see if that turns off the fans and pump. That way the system wouldn't shut down, and the fans and pump could still be off when your not using it. Also, if your computer has it, a hibernation is another form of sleep that is closer to fully turning off the system, but still doesn't completely turn it off and might be better for your use case.
  10. Are there any NAS operating systems to create a NAS for just home network access with anywhere from 4+ tb of storage. Free NAS is out of the running because of how much ram it needs (8gb base + 1 gb per 1tb of storage), and unraid won't work either simply because it's too expensive and is far too complex for my needs. Would the windows baked in "nas" functionality work for my use case, connecting a Mac or PC, or even phone if possible, to it to either stream of copy media off of it? Thanks for any help!
  11. If I had to guess I'd say the amd r9 280x, but I can't tell for sure. I'm almost positive it's an amd r9 2xx or 3xx card.
  12. The problem I'm having has to do with bluetooth headphones connected to my phone. When I play a video or music, the audio is synced with some headphones, but not with others. To make it even more confusing, when I use the same headphones using bluetooth on my laptop, it works just fine. For example, my jaybird x3's and generic bluetooth earpiece are out of sync on my phone, while my Bose qc30's are fine on my phone, and the jaybird's and earpiece work just fine on my laptop, as do the qc30's. What could be causing this audio sync issue? I've tried rebooting the phone, updating it, etc. and nothing has worked. Thanks for any help!
  13. It comes down to which operating system you need for certain programs (i.e. final cut pro x only runs on macOS) If that doesn't matter, I would go with the PC, just because you will have some upgradability in the long run (and PC's are awesomer)
  14. What's the best low power cpu for use in a custom nas? I'm looking at old xeon's and server hardware, so used stuff is fine. I'm also trying to keep costs as low as possible. I have been able to find old xeon quad cores at 3 GHz for like $10 a chip but nothing low power enough for my needs. Since I probably won't even be running windows on it, dual cores are the minimum I want to have and clock speed doesn't have to be anything high, but should be good enough that it's not a bottleneck in any way. Any suggestions?
  15. The MDRXB950BT is the newer 2017 model from what I can gather and it probably sounds a bit better and it says it has some sort of app control (likely for eq settings)
  16. I've heard very good things about the shure se-215, but if I were you, I would try to get a used pair of Sennheiser IE80's off eBay. I got a pair for $80 and they sound miles better than any headphone / earbuds I have ever tried, regardless of the price point. (the msrp for them is $450). There is some risk in getting them used, like for mine I had to get a new cable because the OEM one had a tear in it, but that was only another $8.
  17. From my experience, all Intel stock heatsinks come with thermal paste pre-applied, and it would make sense to me for it to come pre-applied on there as well. (You definitely need to have thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink, if that's what you were asking). It might be good to get a tube of the stuff anyways for future builds or if you decide to upgrade the cpu cooler later down the road.
  18. I would go for the first one because it has the most ports, but you might like the second one because a lot of your devices charge off usb-c. Honestly I think it comes down to personal preference, but I would just choose between the first two, not the third.
  19. Just put in gtx 670 2gb on eBay and put on buy now, and sort from least to most expensive to see what other cards are selling for. Hope this helps
  20. Still anyone with half a brain will understand that this is a scam, but they're showing for gtx 1070 and 1080's too. This to me just doesn't make any sense how they could dream of getting someone to buy it and think it's real under $100. It's whatever I guess, still very strange though
  21. Okay, before you think IM trying to scam you into buying a gpu for $30, go onto eBay and look for a gtx 1060... they will show up, from multiple buyers, for ~$30. Why is this!?!?! Thanks for the help and being patient with me if I'm just stupid and missed something.
  22. Are there any easy ways to measure the sound quality out of the analog outputs of a MacBook and a pc so I can compare them? I think that the MacBook has a nicer dac just by listening, but I want to make sure.
  23. The IE80 are pretty much the perfect iem in my eyes, and even though they sound decent driven badly or ok, they sound absolutely amazing if driven well.
  24. Which is better for sound quality? I'm also looking for a low noise floor for my Sennheiser IE80. Thanks for any help!
