  1. Hey all, I'm a computer engineering college student and my laptop just got destroyed. I was using the Lenovo L380 Yoga and now I'm looking for a new 2 in 1 laptop and well it's been a few years since I've really shopped around for PCs and thought you guys on this forum would probably have a lot more knowledge than me and might be able to help me out. My budget is $1000-1500 Here are some of the things I'm looking for in a laptop: Thin and light form factor, I would like to use this thing to take notes with a digital pen during class or use for written homework so don't want anything too bulky to the point that it's difficult to use as a notebook/writing tablet. The lighter the better, probably don't want anything above a 14" display, currently have a 13.3'' display, doesn't feel too small or anything to me. The lighter the better. Battery life is my next concern. My current laptop has a 45Wh battery and well, let's just say I would really appreciate more battery life, I'd say it's one of the biggest quality of life things I'm looking to improve with this new purchase. I guess while we're talking battery I've heard that the newer Ryzen chips are much faster and much more power efficient than Intel laptop chips ATM. If that's the case then a AMD chip would be preferable i5 or R5 would be the power level I'm looking for. Also I'm fine with just a FHD ips display, at this size it's sharp enough for me and I appreciate the extra battery life compared to laptops with nicer displays. The panel in my laptop goes up to 300 nits, I personally can only think of a very small number of times I've ever wanted more brightness than that in the 3 years that I've owned the laptop, and even then it wasn't that big a deal when I did, so 300-400 nits is probably good nuff for me(maybe I don't know what I'm missing???). To be honest I'm not really too sure what else goes into a good panel vs a bad panel, but I know that there's often more subtleties than a spec sheet can tell you. I just want a good FHD display with reasonable color accuracy and viewing angles. The last things that are important to me are having a backlit keyboard and just having a good keyboard and trackpad. Doesn't need to be massive like apple's or anything, obviously it's nice if there's more room but yeah. Nice to haves but not dealbreakers: -USB A port(s) -USB C charger -pen included (probably biggest one here) -Thunderbolt 4 -nice terrible mic and webcam -upgradable ram I know this is a lot and I really appreciate anyone willing to help, it's just that there's so many 2 in 1 models to consider that I feel like my head is spinning and was hoping some of you guys who are probably more knowledgeable might be able to help me out. I see a lot of models like the Lenovo Yoga 9i, the HP Spectre or Envy x360 versions, and the Dell XPS 2 in 1s. Then there's also the Acer Spin, the Dell Inspiron 2 in 1 and the LG Gram but for some reason it seems like almost no one is talking about those on youtube. There's also Samsungs new 2 in 1 laptop. Anyway, my point is, I've looked but there's just so much to evaluate that I felt like I really needed to enlist the help of the LTT forum. I really appreciate ya'lls time in reading this and would really appreciate any recommendations or guidance. Questions are welcome.
  2. Hey guys, I'm leaving for college in the fall and have been googling myself crazy trying to pick the right laptop for university. In my search I came across the Lenovo L380 which you can check out here. While I was checking reviews and stuff I came across a notebookcheck article which you can find here and it mentions that the display uses PWM at 217 Hz below 90% screen brightness IIRC. What do you guys think about this? Would PWM be a deal breaker for you? If anyone has any other thoughts on the laptop I'd also appreciate them. Anyway, the whole reason why I came across this laptop in the first place is because I'm searching for a new 2-in-1 laptop for university, I swear the more I search the more confused and torn on what to buy I get. What do you guys think is, in your opinion, the best 2-in-1 laptop the meets the following criteria: 13-14 in. IPS ≥ 1920 x 1080 res. Active/AES pen support 8th gen Intel Core i5 8GB RAM ≥ 250 GB SSD ≥ 8 hours battery life (is this enough for university?) Ships US ~$800 after buying active pen unless it comes with it, I'd like to keep it to a max of $950 but if the gains are worth maybe a little over, also remember student discounts What I'm looking for is the laptop that meets the above criteria and comes out on top when it comes to weight, thermals, pen quality, and keyboard. Not really worried about having dedicated graphics or quality of trackpad. Some of the laptops I was already looking at are the Above mentioned Lenovo L380 Yoga Acer spin 5, particularly this model HP spectre x360 13t touch After looking at a few more laptops for a few more days I realized I was lost and decided to come here. I'm really sorry if I'm asking for too much here but I'm losing my mind. Thanks in advance.
  3. Hey guys, I just watched Gamer's Nexus' latest HW News video. In the video Steve brings that the Chinese govt. is looking into RAM price fixing and talks about how RAM price fixing was actually a thing in the past. What are you're thoughts on the matter? Do you think that the reason RAM prices haven't gone down is because of price fixing?
  4. Hi all, I'm leaving for college this next fall and need a laptop. I'm really interested in Ryzen mobile, I seem to recall a hardware canucks video where they mention upcoming laptops with ryzen mobile or something? The Acer swift 3 particularly interested me. I haven't been able to find anything to buy, has anyone heard anything about Ryzen mobile?
  5. Hi all, I was just looking for some advice for overclocking, I just recently built my first overclockable machine. My CPU is a Ryzen 1600X on a MSI B350 Tomahawk motherboard with a H100i v2 AIO cooler. My system is built inside the NZXT H440 with one 140mm rear exhaust, two 120mm top exhausts, and three front mounted 120mm intake fans (bottom two are for radiator.) Last night was the first night that I ran Prime95 blend test overnight @4GHz/1.3V and when I woke up two workers failed right when I turned on my monitor. Did the workers actually fail earlier in the night and it only displayed it once I turned on my monitor? Or was that just coincidence or failure from moving my mouse after leaving it for like 8 hours? Also is Prime95 reliable for stress testing, if so is blend the best option? My peak temperatures are 75*C for CPU package in HWMonitor, and 82.5*C for VRMs. Are these good temps? It had already been running for like an hour before I went to bed and, at the time, the max temps were 70*C for VRM and 65*C for CPU package. I think I'm going to try to turn up the voltage to 1.325V. Absolutely any advice or help would be very appreciated. Thanks.
  6. Okay, thank you! But just to be clear, around what temps do you consider to be unacceptable for general OCing?
  7. Yes, the one on the left felt like I briefly dipped my finger in hot coffee. The one on the top is just a little warm, no pain. This was before I stopped Prime95 though.
  8. Hi everyone, first post on the LTT foums I just recently finished my second PC build ever with a Ryzen 1600X on a MSI B350 Tomahawk mobo. As I'm writing this I'm stress testing an overclock @4.0GHz, 1.35V in Prime95 and my motherboard temps are in the 90s. Overclocking is something pretty new to me but I'm pretty sure those aren't very good temperatures. I'm using the NZXT H440 case as well as the corsair H100i v2 AIO cooler. Front mounted rad on the bottom two fans and one of the included fnv2 fans for the 3rd front mounted fan, one 140mm rear exhaust and two 120mm top exhausts. What are the highest safe/good VRM temps for longevity while running Prime95 blend test, whats the max you'd be comfortable with? Thanks.
  9. Hey guys, I am soon going to attempt to build my first custom PC. I've been doing alot of research and that's when I stumbled upon Linus's videos a couple weeks back. Ever since then I've been trying to decide on parts for an ok gaming PC. I'm going to list all the parts I am currently planning to buy and maybe you guys could help me with some recommendations. My budget is 600-700 USD not including peripherals. Thank you.
