  1. Here is what I believe I'll be using for my build barring no more suggestions: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4690-Processor-Cache-BX80646I54690/dp/B00JST2QEW/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437454207&sr=1-2&keywords=intel+core+i5-4690k http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-HAF-912-Computer/dp/B00BCXF6O4/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437360628&sr=1-3&keywords=cooler+master+haf+922 http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-FURY-2x4GB-1600MHz/dp/B00J8E93G6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1437524050&sr=8-2&keywords=8+gb+hyperx http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Silent-Pro-RS700-AMBAD3-US/dp/B001NJ0CZK OR http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-650-Watt-BRONZE-Certified-Hive-650/dp/B005ILWYJQ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487068 http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-DDR3-2600-Motherboards-Z97-C/product-reviews/B00K2R6E4M/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt_rgt?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addThreeStar&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=helpful&reviewerType=all_reviews&filterByStar=critical&pageNumber=1 The cooler can be purchased later as I don't plan on overclocking just yet. The SSD I already own has windows 8 w/ restore disc so OS is not a problem. I am definitely a "noob" when it comes to understanding how cases can be planned out for cable management so please let me know if there might be any issues creating a clean looking rig that is well managed cable wise (its the OCD in me). The picture below is a good idea of what I'm shooting for! SAM_0161.JPG Im looking down the line to replace the cables almost entirely with white paracord sleeved ones buttttttt.....thats a nitpick I simply won't be able to afford for quite some time. AKA its not a priority but I like sharing my ideas with fellow enthusiasts! P.S. @IanDrexP I greatly appreciate your consideration with the gold RAM. I think a reputable brand like Kingston might be a safer bet, but trust me I was digging the looks of that RAM. @Bob Jim I was seriously considering the seasonic PSU but it seemed like I needed a bit more wattage for the graphics and cap room for LED's/fans. @BigDay I saw the suggestion for the liquid cooler but as mentioned above I don't think I'll need that JUST yet but I've taken down that component for future reference! Thanks guys!
  2. Hey guys! My name is Kyle (nice to meet the community as its only my 2nd post!) and I'm doing my first REAL PC build and I was wondering if you had any suggestions or improvements. I already own the Kingston SSD so that won't factor into the $800 price tag but ill include the link anyways. As well the GTX 980 I am posting is surely beyond my means in terms of raw power however through some spectacular local deal with work discounts and price matching I was able to get it for $212. Yes. $212. $212. $212. My dreams must have finally come true......LOL in any case my goals for this build are as follows: 1. Have a rig that is cost effective yet also has the ability for multitasking, some pure gaming performance, and just general badass performance. 2. My rig should be fairly silent and have good cooling priorities (I plan to add more fans as I go along and see fit) 3. Be able to overclock should I want to but I may not need to initially My current pricing brings me to around $750 and I would prefer to use that other 50 towards cable modding etc. Thanks! PS. my plan for this build is to use white fans, RAM, and lighting as well as painting the PSU a matte gold, and using white remade cable sleeving. Hopefully you guys can visualize the White/Gold scheming I am going for. I know a lot of this won't fit into my current budget but I am moving soon for a new job and that should easily be able to provide accessories for this build. Happy parts hunting and thanks again for any feedback!
  3. Alright so I have talked to a few professionals in the area and given my major, Graphics and web video development, they actually recommended an AMD, but one that has according to benchmarks close enough performance and efficiency to the 4460 mention above for slightly less (within 10 FPS). It is a FX 8320E 8 core CPU with turboboost to 4.0GHZ. Given the multitasking and rendering strengths of this processor as well as such similar benchmarks I have a hard time seeing intel as the best option. YES the intel is more powerful but I won't need that power for my gaming load. I am aware the AMD does draw more wattage but reading below I have planned for those and would rather sacrifice those than 10 FPS. I HAVE changed my case option however to a cooler master 912. Not only is it $30 cheaper than an NZXT but it also provides a few more cooling options for that beastly 8 cores and graphics card. I have also updated my PSU to be a cooler master 700w silent and modular unit. Does this seem more plausible and less sloppy? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MUTWEM6/ref=psdc_229189_t2_B00CLBZAHY (CPU) http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Silent-Pro-RS700-AMBAD3-US/dp/B001NJ0CZK (PSU) http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-HAF-912-Computer/dp/B00BCXF6O4/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437360628&sr=1-3&keywords=cooler+master+haf+922 (Case)
  4. The Graphics card I am getting at $212 (it has already shipped via staples with price matching and some tom foolery with employee discounts). I am fully aware that no matter what CPU I get I probably won't use the 980 to even 75% potential.....but is that a bad thing at that price? will it harm the machine to use it under less stress? Or is it just considered "sloppy"? At $212 I obviously would like to future proof myself if possible even if only for a little bit. The case is irrelevant so I don't mind spending less to go for Intel as I've used them before but check this video out for intel supporters: Among other tech reviewers I am seeing polarization of preferences (android to apples if you will) and I'm truly wondering if the difference is that noticeable. For example I have a few gaming friends who swear by AMD at its price point and "AMD's are garbage for gaming" doesn't seem factual only preference as I've heard it on both sides of the fence. I actually tend to want to go for intel because as I've said I've used them before BUT unbiased real scenario experience on both ends would be helpful. I apologize if I haven't tagged anyone specific as I'm not sure how but i certainly appreciate all the input! Keep it coming you guys are lifesavers
  5. Hey guys! (and Linus and crew!) So I am building my first gaming PC, and I've been a console gamer all my life. I will be going into web app development as a major at Boise State, but mainly Im selling my consoles to pay for a sweet gaming rig that doesn't break the bank. I have a list of components that I will post below and I am wondering if you guys could give any advice on cheaper alternatives/ whether or not this would be a good setup. A lot of my components are nicer than I REALLY need but my budget is $700 and I would like to save money if I can and keep it in the sweet spot. The components are as follows w/ links: MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970 GAMING (http://www.amazon.com/MSI-DDR3-Motherboard-970-GAMING/dp/B00LUY72F6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437276352&sr=8-1&keywords=msi+970+gaming+motherboard) Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3 1600 MHz PC3 12800 240-Pin DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit (http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-240-Pin-Channel-CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9/dp/B004CRSM4I/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1437184796&sr=8-9&keywords=amd+ddr3) AMD FD6350FRHKBOX FX-6350 FX-Series 6-Core Black Edition (http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD6350FRHKBOX-FX-6350-6-Core-Black/dp/B00CLBZAHY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437184590&sr=8-1&keywords=AMD+FX6350) Seasonic M12II 620 BRONZE ; SS-620GM2 80Plus Power Supply (http://www.amazon.com/Seasonic-M12II-620-BRONZE-SS-620GM2/dp/B003HE260I?tag=bestpsus-20) NZXT Phantom 410 Mid Tower USB 3.0 Gaming Case - Red (http://www.amazon.com/NZXT-Phantom-Tower-Gaming-Case/dp/B006I2H08E/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1437186266&sr=8-7&keywords=antec+900) In terms of the drives I already own those, a 240GB kingston SSD w/ WD 1TB Blue for storing games/media. Heres the real kicker though......my graphics card is this EVGA GTX980 Superclocked 4GB GDDR5 256bit, DVI-I, DP x 3, HDMI, SLI Ready Graphics Card (http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GTX980-Superclocked-Graphics-04G-P4-2982-KR/dp/B00NI5DA2E/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1437277974&sr=1-5&keywords=GTX+980) THIS CARD I ONLY PAID $212 FOR!!!!!!! I do realize the GTX 980 is far beyond what I need but if it works with this system at $212 I would be crazy not to get it.....right? I am also planning on getting a CPU cooler because I know AMD's can run hot but that I can buy from Staples where I work no problem. (However CPU cooler recommendations would be great!) Thanks guys!!!!!
