  1. The idea of the post is mainly that I REALLY like the form factor that the HP Microserver case currently has. It has a motherboard, with chip, with 5 Drives, and a SSD in a extremely compact form factor IF and WHEN I am to upgrade, I would like to keep the form factor as close as possible (maybe have a deeper case) so thats why I'm looking into if there is a way to get a different motherboard and chip (other than a HP microserver proprietary motherboard) into the case that i have. Then secondary I was mentioning that playing through to the PS4 lags on larger format video (could maybe be the codec too), I need to figure out if its because the hardware is lacking (hence why thinking/looking at upgrading) or if it is a setting from Plex, or if its maybe on the PS4 side... I dont know. If I play a video to the PS4 using Universal Media Server from my PC, i can play BlueRay video no issue. (I know that could be because my PC is higher spec...) But it does prove to me that it is not the network (although could still be a network setting on FreeNas/plex VS windows/UMS) Thanks for the input guys
  2. The server as it currently stands, does its job I think i mainly need to figure out if its from the server side or the playstation side that I get choppy playback on larger format videos. for the moment, I cannot test as the server is off. one drive has failed and I cant afford a new 3TB RED at this moment
  3. Yeah... I dont mind hacking the back apart to make the MOBO and the IO of it fit in the case. and thats the idea of the AIO, external mount. can still have the internal fan, just make sure its setup in a push/pull configuration... should work I think before I make any drastic dessions, first figure out if the reason the video is so slow is because of CPU or some other factor. I did read somewhere that it might be network related... need to go check again where i found that
  4. yes... this is the reason for the post, to figure out if I can upgrade the motherboard. Is there a way to just play the larger format videos without transcoding from the microserver? I mean if I use universal Media Server on my PC and play a video to my PS4...it plays (have run a 4k video like this with no issues) so I know it is not my network, or the playstation 4, so I am assuming it is either plex somehow restricting bandwidth (on the NAS side or the PS4 side) or the fact that the CPU in the NAS is not strong enough to play a higher format video directly without transcoding. Cool, and not cool... this is what I need to know. the fact that a miniITX will fit is good news, but removing the cage is bad news. I LOVE the form factor of the case as it currently stands, so want to keep that intact as much as possible. how about using a AIO to cool? like a Corsair H80i? (single fan/rad) Otherwise... would need to somehow create a new case with the same dimensions.
  5. Hey all I have an older HP Microserver (specs and usage below) Old school HP ProLiant Microserver (N36L) Gen 7 • AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo N36L Dual-Core Processor • 8025mb of RAM • OS version - FreeNAS-11.0-U4 (54848d13b) • On-board ethernet is dead so have a intel I210 NIC installed in one of the PCI slots • 5x 3TB WD red SATA • 1x 64gb Kingston SSD as main OS drive System Use - light raid storage (for 3D animation work and training, and series and movies) and (secondary) Plex server on the network (mainly use that through the PS4 to watch on the TV in the lounge) I find that trying to transcode or run larger format video through plex is super laggy so I was wondering... Is there a possibility I can upgrade the chip and mobo while retaining the casing and hard drives? I know that I could buy a replacement HP Proliant Motherboard and chip from a newer Gen (like a N54L board) and it will fit in the casing, but I was wondering if its possible to get a different mobo from a manufacturer like ASUS or something and then add a faster chip and have that fit in the case? I am unsure of the form factor in the actual case (might be proprietary) and the board should have an onboard USB header otherwise I can use a SATA port, and IDEALLY needs to have a miniSAS port (currently how the 4 drives inside the case are plugged into the mobo) otherwise I might need to switch over to going direct SATA or a expansion PCI-E card that has a miniSAS on it. I dont care about the rear IO, I am willing to cut more space in there if it means a newer, more up to date motherboard.
  6. and this is what i have done.... I want to know if I can install the latest driver, or the latest driver for my card atleast... WITHOUT having to install the Adrenalin software OR if its even gives any advantage
  7. Is there a way to install the latest driver without having to install the interface/suite?? I have been having ENDLESS problems with my R9 390 where watching videos or youtube would cause my machine to hard crash to a black screen. Thing is, Games are perfectly fine... I can play for hours with no issue whatsoever I have long suspected that its AMD's stupid Wattman system, and I was right... for a long time i would get the error warning that Wattman has restored defaults because of a error and only recently it has been causing the hard crashes In this thinking, I resorted to rolling back drivers and went all the way back to 15.20.1062, (still has the old AMD Radeon settings interface) and... so far... for about a week now, my machine has been stable. is there any way to have that interface, but with a newer driver? or is the newer driver even necessary with the card generation that I have?
  8. okay... so I have rolled ALL the way back in drivers to version 15.20.1062 so no Wattman... have had one black screen crash, but FAR less of them. been watching youtube clips non-stop whereas before my PC would blackscreen during around the second video. So... IS there a way to get the latest drivers without having to install the new interface with Wattman on it?
  9. sorry to necro an old thread. but did you have any success on fixing this issue? I have EXACTLY the same problem on my R9 390
  10. I have a Samsung SSD 850 Evo M.2 (250gb) lying on my desk. In my main system i am using a standard SATA SSD as my windows/programs drive. could I plug the M.2 in on my Motherboard and use it as a cache drive (for things like MAYA and After effects and substance painter)
  11. I have been with AMD (or ATI or Radeon... whatever they go by now) for eons... First one was a ATI Rage (i think) Problem is that I am in the 3D animation field and have been fine up until now. I currently have a R9 390 (yes... older tech, but it has served me well) and things have been going well, can still play a few of the newer game titles on full spec without any hiccups. I am looking to upgrade somewhere soon and I would love to stay with AMD, but 3D animation software is making this a very hard choice. Maya and after effects (and a few other software packages) have been taking advantage of CUDA cores for a while now, with still no love for AMD, I have been waiting for a while when they said that they would be looking into AMD alternatives, but this has still not happened. Now Nvidia have added RTX to the mix, and a few packages are already taking advantage of this (substance, substance painter, Arnold... etc) with still nothing on the horizon for AMD GPUs. So... should i just bite the bullet and jump ship? What are your thoughts and opinions? (AND NO...JUST NO! THIS IS NOT A WHICH IS BETTER FLAMEWAR!)
  12. im having a similar issue but for AMD and it only seems to happen on desktop or when watching youtube or a video... playing games and doing 3D renderings are just fine
  13. ok, so no one seems to be able to answer me, could someone send me to another forum where they might know the answer?
  14. Don't know where else to ask this... so I thought i would take a chance here. Ok, the scenario... I have 5 render boxes linked into our network all running windows 7 our main server is running Mac Version 10.11: "El Capitan" I created a .bat and stuck it into the startup with the line "net use \\LS-server\ls_work /user:render render" This used to work fine on OSX Version 10.10: "Yosemite" and earlier, but since the update the render boxes dont auto log into the server anymore. I know to get it to work before I had to change a line in the registry (The clients that did not work had the registry key LmCompatibilityLevel in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\lsa set to "1") had to change it to 3 i think... all was fine until the update. strange thing is that if I remote desktop to those render machines and open windows explorer, navigate to the server and click on it, it brings up the login dialogue box. if I type in the user name and password and hit enter, it logs in just fine. so.... whats the issue with the auto login? Any ideas
  15. Good day all I am very new to setting up a NAS from scratch... running and upholding one that has been built is no issue to me though. I got myself a second hand HP proliant microserver (gen7) and i have a few questions... First off, the onboard NIC is dead so it came with an expansion NIC (a TP-link TG-3468). The motherboard of the microserver has a PCIEX1 and a PCIEX16 slot on it, will it make any difference to which slot to put it in? Also, I am going to be putting in 4 drives and a SSD for cache or OS (the OS can also go on a 4GB usb Drive that can be pluged in onboard that i got with the device.) possibly go for 6 drives. (which is possible with a bit of customization) Question is... should i go with freeNAS running a ZFS system (the original owner was running freenas on it with a raid setup) or should i go with Xpenology (some people said I should give it a go.) any and all help is appreciated
