There's a $100+ price difference between the 390 and 390X

At first I was going with the whole rebrand banwagon then I realized it is similar but isn't a rebrand.

I want to settle this once and for all. The 390 seems better than the 970 in most ways and for the same price. The damn thing has twice as much VRAM. The temps and power intake are more than the 970 but it isn't enough to really matter. In which situations would the 970 still be a viable option?

~ R9 390>GTX 970>GTX 960 Go with the R9 390 due to the fact it uses the 15.15 drivers, has much better tesselation then the 2xx series(though the 15.15 drivers will probably be available for the 2xx series soon). It slightly out performs the 290x, and trades blows with the 970. In addition, it comes with 8 gigabytes of vram. It performs the best, however, at high resolutions(1440p and 4k). That's not to say it isn't capable of maxing games at 1080p either. So you get the performance of a 970/290x and twice the vram for the same price. I'd go for the 390.

A 970 can fucking max everything out at 1080p, the 960 is for scrubs who think PS4s are more powerful than PCs.
