  1. 4 second open time really isn't that bad. If you're really pressed about it, maybe try uninstalling browser plugins, clearing history, etc. Also make sure your Firefox version is up to date.
  2. it'd be kinda cumbersome to get in and out of the setup i'd imagine
  3. case in point: people know exactly what someone means when they refer to "Linux" without needing to go into the technicalities of it. It's like when someone says "Kleenex" and everyone knows that they just mean a facial tissue, "Velcro" when they mean "hook and loop fastener" (as the company would prefer you call it), or "Tylenol" instead of "acetaminophen." Everyone will know exactly what you're referring to when you say "Linux"-- you aren't referring to the kernel itself, but rather you're using the term "Linux" as an all-encompassing name to refer to the wide variety of open-source operating system distros that utilize it.
  4. I was responsible for training some underclassmen in computer work before I graduated high school last year and used a bunch of TechQuickie videos to give them a crash course in what they'd be working with. They explained things far better than I would have been able to (and also much clearer than I would have).
  5. A lot of people in the computing field tend to lack the social skills necessary to properly handle people, especially people who might not be quite as intelligent or otherwise knowledgeable as they are. It's just something you kind of have to expect with the territory. Honestly, I mostly see it with people who consider themselves a part of the Linux community, especially with how they're so eager to throw noodly hands if you say you don't like using Linux or you use a distro that they don't like.
  6. Just found the HP 35s, which claims to be programmable. Disclaimer: HP is fond of RPN calculators, but they're built like tanks. The HP calculator my dad used in college is still very much alive and kicking. http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-35s-scientific-calculator-p-f2215aa-aba--1
  7. A TI-36 Pro might be a good bet. It's not programmable, but it's got some pretty nice feature sets, including the ability to store up to 8 memory variables...
  8. serious responses so far, yes, but a tech forum (even one with well-meaning people) should not be the first place someone goes to receive medical/psychological help under any circumstances, really (and i spend a lot of time on a forum full of teenagers who post on the forum about their bleeding penis/broken finger/multiple hour long nosebleed before they think about seeing a doctor-- it never really goes well and they only get told "call a doctor?"). best case scenario, OP gets convinced to go and get actual help or maybe just gets a little comfort that he's not as crazy as he might think. OP shouldn't be putting his mental health into the hands of people here and should, as praesi said, talk to his parents about maybe seeing a therapist.
  9. maybe because chances are, none of the people that will reply to this topic are medical professionals
  10. coffee, makeup/skincare, clothes, and money to put towards a galaxy s7
  11. At the high school I went to, they'd confiscate your phone and your charger if they caught you charging your phone from the wall or from the computers. A couple years ago they nabbed a kid with child porn on his phone because he plugged the phone into one of the computers in the Mac lab, so the high school started really cracking down on students charging their phones on-campus after that.

    200mm Fan Options

I've got 200mm NZXT fans in my case that are nice and quiet on lower speeds. They aren't PWM as far as I know, though.
  13. Never had a headset break on me like that despite wearing them for about 8+ hours every day, only issues I've had was the typical "sound goes out in one ear" thing. Then again, I've never spent more than about $80 on a pair of headphones, and that $80 pair has lasted me about... 3 or 4 years or so? Also, loving the little knitted cozy for your headphones.
  14. I used to upgrade my phone every two years, but then Sprint did away with their 2-year contracts, so I don't know when I'll decide to buy a new phone. As for my computer, my current trend is a new one every 5 years or so, but that was mostly back when I'd have to wait for the newest hand-me-down: my dad would get a new PC, so he'd give his old one to my older sister, and I'd get her old one. But I also had my old computer for five or six years before I got my current computer, which I've had for two years so far. But since this one isn't a $600 budget computer like my old one, I'll probably start doing incremental upgrades with it in a couple years or so when I notice it can't keep up as well.
  15. Because you don't contribute anything relevant or of any value to the discussion when you come into the thread and basically say "i don't care lol"
  16. If you don't care, why bother posting? That capacity meter thing actually seems pretty neat. Better hurry up and buy one while they're still in stock, yeah?

    ups

Try running your computer from a power source other than your UPS. If it still turns off randomly, something is wrong with your computer; otherwise, either get a new UPS or see if the unit is still under warranty. Sometimes the company will ship you a free replacement battery if one fails.
  18. The heat sensor sounds plausible, especially if it takes a minute or two for the machine to cut off. I'm not really sure how you would get that fixed, though.
  19. Yikes, that thermal paste application looks pretty terrible. If you really want, you could clean the paste off with some high concentration rubbing alcohol and give it a fresh, proper application. Some thermal pastes do contain metal IIRC and can potentially cause shorts if they come into contact with board components. You also won't really be able to tell if the CPU is broken just by the exterior, as it may be a failure with the silicon inside naturally deteriorating with use: some people are luckier than others when it comes to components. If at all possible, perhaps you could try to find a replacement CPU for your laptop? I don't know how feasible (or affordable) that might be if it's a mobile processor, though, but it might be worth a shot, assuming you can even remove your laptop's CPU.
  20. Might be that it's the CPU issue, then. I'm not too sure what else could be causing the issue, and it does kind of make sense for it to be 11 beeps repeated twice.
