Apparently, EVGA's support & customer care are excellent so I decided to try them! :ph34r:

 

No, but seriously - I've got terrible luck I guess, I received my new GPU and after two-three days this connector died:

I noticed during playing BF1 that the card was at around 85C (!) when normal gaming temps are around 50C. I immediately turned the game off and went to check if everything was okay through my case window and noticed the radiator fan wasn't spinning. I shut down my PC, decided to try plugging the fan in to my motherboard - turns out the fan is working perfectly so it's the connector that died (I verified by reconnecting it again).

 

I already contacted EVGA's support to ask for assistance and they responded: "I apologize for the trouble with your card, we can replace it under warranty for this." and instructed me to file an RMA request so I'm waiting for acceptance and I'm going to ship the card to them. Sadly, AFAIK they don't have an office in Poland so I'll probably be forced to send it to EU HQ in Munich, Germany.

    @i_build_nanosuits It doesn't even hurt me to be fair because connecting the fan to the motherboard gives the same effect, but it is a defect and I didn't pay that much for the card to have a defect on it xD

    No, it's not possible because the radiator fan on the Hybrid is not controllable at all! It runs at a fixed 56% speed and that's pretty much it, it's one of the stupidest things I noticed about this card, you cannot go below that 56% speed threshold so it's fairly audible even when idle. The Precision XOC software only controls the fan on the card itself...

     

    The only thing you can do is replace the fan and connect it to your motherboard to control through BIOS, SpeedFan or in my case, ASUS AI Suite 3. You cannot even re-use the stock fan because it's a simple 3-pin fan with 2 cables so it cannot spin any slower actually.

    locked to 56%...wow...that's a wierd choice from EVGA...they cut corner there...so imo letting the card control the fan is an absolute no go as far as i'm concerned i wouldn't deal with a fan spinning 56% even on idle...

     

    how about the GPU chip itself? is it a decent overclocker? RAM overclocks well?

    And also, can you control the RPM of the pump through software or does this also going full trottle all the time?

    That's a lot of possible failure points with these cards...fan connecter, pump, radiator, tubing...lots can/will go wrong over time.

    @Legendarypoet That's what I'm probably going to do when I get a replacement, I'd use a Noctua NF-F12 fan but the colour scheme is, ugh... Maybe a Be Quiet! Silent Wings 2/3 will do. Or a Cooler Master MasterFan Pro Air Pressure RGB so I can control the lighting via ASUS Aura, though this one will probably be louder and less efficient.

     

    @i_build_nanosuits Yeah, I think they just wanted to get away with the use of a cheaper, non-PWM fan... It's a bit sad that you need to buy a replacement fan right-away to get a quiet GPU, despite the fact that it's a premium product that's also priced premium.

     

    The GPU chip itself doesn't overclock too well, I managed to get 2088MHz sustained clock speed on the core which is so-so, but the memory overclocks like crazy! Stable +950MHz offset which translates into almost 12Gbps memory up from 10Gbps stock :D
    Though this will all probably be irrelevant soon if they replace my card :P

    It translated into around 24600 GPU score in FireStrike once overclocked, which isn't bad but it's soooo close to my previous 980Ti which got almost 21500 once OC'd, that's pretty much stock 1080 FE performance levels :P

    well...2088mhz is actually quite good...not many 1080s can do more than that actually...i can't get mine to be stable at anything more than 1980mhz tops...memory i'm getting aways with +580...i think you got a pretty good card actually, and personally i'd deal with the connector that is broken by simply not using it anyways.

    As for firestrike performance, maxwell GPU's always performed well in firestrike...i'm sure if you do other benchmarks and gaming benchmarks you'll realize the 1080 is significantly faster than a 980ti there...firestrike is a best case scenario for a 980ti that's why.

    @i_build_nanosuits An update: I sent my card to EVGA and it's crossing the border to Germany right now, EVGA should receive it in max two days and I hope they will send me a replacement quickly.

     

    In other news, I found an excellent deal on a brand-new Noctua NF-F12 PWM Chromax so I'll use that for the GPU radiator, it's pretty much one of the best possible choices for radiators from what I've read. It's also black instead of the usual "Noctua beige" color :P It should be quiet and I'll be able to control it via ASUS AI Suite 3

    On a side note, kudos to DPD for shipping the card to Germany in less than two days!

    There are two GTX 1080 Hybrids, one is a cheaper model based on the reference PCB with a regular, 90mm axial fan - I've got the theoretically better 1080 FTW Hybrid based on the 1080 FTW PCB (twice as powerful VRM etc) with a 10cm, inverted radial fan on it :P

    To be fair I don't know why there are GTX 1080s with enhanced power delivery etc, the FTW version has a 10+2 VRMs while the reference PCB has 5+1 VRMs.

     

    Since both can overclock to the same levels, why does the FTW PCB have two 8-pin power connectors instead of one? I mean, the 1080 shouldn't be able to draw that much power and its overclocking potential is limited by solely by voltage... The only real difference is that the FTW PCB allows for a higher power limit threshold...

    they are overkill...even a basic reference card with a crap cooler can max out the overclock, it's limited by the quality of the chip you have on it...

    my card has 8+2 power phase and it's said on the box itself that it's ''over-designed for more overclocking'' lol :P
