Okay, I feel like I've got to say that this is getting pretty much ridiculous. THIS ISN'T A WAY TO GO IF YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE EQUALITY.

Forcing employers to pay women equally through fines is not a good solution at all. It's actually more like admitting that women are inferior employees, and it's making the issue even worse in the long-term.

I'm sure no normal employer looks at the possible candidates to hire and says, "oh, I'll just hire the guy instead of the girl since he has a penis between his legs and I'll pay him more because of that". He doesn't want to pay more to anyone because from his perspective, it would be best if everyone worked for him free of charge.

No! Employers calculate the cost and risks that come with employing people, if they determine that hiring a man is a safer bet for them, then let them freely do it as it's a free market! They don't "hate" women and they don't think they're inferior, they just pay the most to whoever they think is the best match for the position they're offering.

And if this seems like a good idea to someone, then ask yourself this: why didn't the goverment of Iceland introduce a law that requires mine owners to employ equal amount of men and women? Since both genders are "equal", mines should have an equal amount of male and female workers, right?

Giving special rights to one of the groups means that there is no equality anymore because one of the parties got special treatment. And this is wrong.

Would be true if this didn't happen on a regular and I for myself seen it happened with my last job. Some employers are just assholes and just see women as inferior in general

But at the same time people need to put in the work for what they want to get paid.

I think people forgot the U.S. has had equal pay laws since 1963, so IDK why on earth people think men get payed more. And if men do get payed more, why don't companies hire all women to save money?

@XenosTech It's possible that someone is just an asshole, same as there are murderers, people who hate animals etc. It applies to any person, not just the employers so why should normal employers be punished with such law? I just don't understand that :/

But when an employer simply judges that employing a man will give him greater benefits then why shouldn't he be able to pay him more, and vice-versa? :/

For instance, hiring a married woman brings a higher risk to the employer because she might potentially go on a maternal leave when she's pregnant, this is less likely to occur to a male employee so he might prefer to employ him instead. This is perfectly normal and it shouldn't suprise anyone... Unless I'm missing the point somehow

@Max_Settings Precisely. A quote from the article I linked:

    Quote

"We [Iceland] have had legislation saying that pay should be equal for men and women for decades now but we still have a pay gap."

Maybe they should start figuring out the reason why it's still there instead of trying to fix a hole with a chainsaw...

@Morgan MLGman There's a saying that goes "Peter pays for Paul and Paul pays for all." I guess it's happened enough times to warrant such fines being implemented.

@Max_Settings As my last boss told me (as much of a jackass I think he is) "There's certain things in the work place women do way better than men and he would always pick a woman over a man for that position." He also paid his only female tech less money than the males and she had the same job description and responsibilities as the rest of us. It just happens in individual companies and the relevant authorities will have access to that info to make informed decisions I guess.

@XenosTech It's a very complex issue and we need to remember that it goes both sides, it's like I demanded equality because someone didn't hire me to be a hostess at an event to advertise a company, I know I'm not fit for that position because I'm ugly for instance so I'm not applying for it - both women and men have their advantages to an employer and they usually just pick what's best for their business... How does fining someone for not paying one person as much as the other create equality, it actually creates artificial inequality and it's not a good way to fight for it, as it gives special rights to only one part of the society...

Exceptions like the one you mentioned should be judged on an individual basis IMO.

We had a law in Poland on one of the bigger Universities that required them to accept a certain amount of females to the Uni each year. Normally, acceptance is based on the number of points that you get from your maturity exam so there were cases where males with more points than some females weren't accepted because there had to be a certain female amount of students so they were forced to accept students with lower scores solely because of the gender. It doesn't sound like equality to me, since everyone would have an equal chance to get in without that law...

@Morgan MLGman In that case it doesn't make sense but I'm looking at this from the point that there are some women out there who are more capable than or as good as their male counterparts who still get paid less. That's why I gave Max settings the scenario of my former work place.

@XenosTech Of course! I'm not saying that this issue doesn't exist, I'm only saying that laws like this one in particular are creating a whole another problem and this isn't the way to solve anything :P I don't have anything in mind that could solve this properly, but I'm sure there are smarter people than me who can do that!

@Morgan MLGman It really comes down to common sense and ethics. If business owners can exercise both and pay people for the good work they put in then the government or whatever relevant entity will step up and put fines and regulations in place as blanket, so everybody benefits even if they don't deserve to.

The way to go to achieve equality is not to make it illegal to pay people unequally based on gender???????????????????????????????????????????

@ivan134 I'm not sure what you mean here :P
