  1. The 290 has been known to throttle down to prevent itself from melting. Don't tell AMD fans that. What do I know.
  2. Either get a case with better airflow or stick with a reference card. If he refuses to dump his case with poor airflow, I'd avoid AMD and go with a 960 reference. You can find them for as low as $169.99 without the rebate BS. I bought from from Fry's Electronics for that amount without the rebate bs and it came with a Witcher 3 download coupon. Fantastic deal.
  3. make sure your PSU can feed the 290
  4. I didn't say the 960 beats the AMD duos. However, I'm willing to sacrifice 2-3 fps to get a cooler, more stable card, with better driver support (specially during AAA title releases) and physx.
  5. It's really AMD's fault for their lack of involvement with developers
  6. If all he's playing is CS:GO and Minecraft, a 750ti is more than enough. Low price and you can even get a model that requires no external power connector.
  7. The difference between the 960 and 380 is so small that it's not even noticeable. 2-3fps, whooptie doo! The 960 over clocks really well and can easily close that gap. Not to mention if you don't have a robust power supply, that's going to be an extra expense going the AMD route. Then there's the issue of power consumption and heat dissipation. If you have a small room prepare to sweat like a pig in the summer.
  8. The R9 380 isn't the "better buy" compared to the GTX 960. The 380 costs about 20% more than the 960 yet only squeezes out 2-3 frames more than the 960. A slight over clock on the 960 will easily close that tiny gap, for free. The 380 is a failed re-badge.
  9. Bullshit, even Radeon manufacturers require 500 watts. https://www.visiontek.com/graphics-cards/visiontek-radeon-r9-380-detail.html#system-requirements http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5462#sp If you think that you can drive around a Corvette on Prius tires, then yeah, go right ahead.
  10. Depends on your PSU. If you have one that's less than 500 watts, stick with Nvidia. Otherwise you'll have to buy a beefy PSU. AMD card with insufficient PSU =
  11. Should be fine with 1440p gaming at 60fps. 4K is going to cost you a lot more money.
  12. The farther away from the cpu, usually poorer performance.
  13. Remove the drivers prior to installing your 960?
