I have had probably a dozen desks in my time. Ikea sorta mecahnical style, standard desks, "executive" desks. They all pretty much sucked. What I really needed was a long desk, 7' and deep, 32" or so and adjustable.
The best thing I found where I didn't have to build it myself was a workbench top from ULINE. It's pretty nice for a big top of wood formed together, I think it's maple. I then got some adjustable legs from Ikea. All I had to do was strip off the ULINE varnish top coat and stain it to what I wanted, which adds a nice custom touch. All together it wasn't cheap, maybe 400 bucks but at least I have what I've wanted for a long time. A large desk that looks nice and is bulletproof and adjustable.
