  1. http://gigaom.com/2014/07/16/disrupting-the-drive-by-why-the-fbis-warning-about-driverless-cars-and-shootings-is-silly/ With the reality of autonomous cars coming closer and closer, it has become the point of concern for the FBI. Before these cars even hit the road on a mass scale, the thought of criminals utilizing this technology has already created problems. According to the FBI, autonomous cars “will have a high impact on transforming what both law enforcement and its adversaries can operationally do with a car.” They go on to say that “bad actors will be able to conduct tasks that require use of both hands or taking one’s eyes off the road which would be impossible today.” On the other hand, the FBI details certain ways in which autonomous cars could be helpful for law enforcement. Personally I think that their reaction is a bit far-fetched. Driverless cars are driverless as a factor of convenience. As such, they likely will not be designed to exceed the speed limit, which would be a necessary factor if a criminal were to use one as a getaway vehicle. Taking out a vehicle that can't go any faster than the speed limit is much easier than one that is driving recklessly.
  2. Hey, I have had my current build for ~3 months and it's driving me crazy. The thing is so loud, even after working with BIOS and changing fans speeds. I've narrowed it down to my PSU. Current build: Intel i5-4670K @ 3.4GHz Asus Z87-C Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM LG Disc Drive EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750G Fractal Design Define R4 Goal: Achieve dead silence. Or as close to it as possible. I could either replace components in my current PC, or scrap it and start over. Budget....meh, we'll see where this takes us. I'm flexible. I would like the "new" build to include a few things. Things to include: GPU (silence is key, probably going with a 770) Small, clean looking case (may be able to fudge a bit on the size, but a clean look is absolutely key. Apple kind of clean.) [Only really need a new case if there's a better one for noise reduction] Preferably a monitor that matches the case. Looking for a bezel that's as small as possible, and I'm kind of digging the silver/chromium look. I understand this is a lot to request in one post, but I appreciate any and all help!
  3. Back in January, I was playing a game of Civ V, and when I went to exit to desktop, my screen locked up. It went black, it started flashing, and there were artifacts all over the place. Then my computer bluescreened. It said the cause of the bluescreen was due to two files in my drivers, atikmpag.sys and atikmdag.sys. The problem would go away if I uninstalled the graphics drivers but would return if I reinstalled them. Since then, I have upgraded to Windows 8 and I no longer bluescreen with drivers installed. However, when I try to boot into Windows, it becomes extremely laggy and all I get is a black screen. If I'm lucky I might be able to click on something and a window might open up. The problem is that the drivers are crashing, or that's what Windows is telling me. I've tried to fix this problem on many occasions, and I've yet to find a fix that worked. I did a fresh install of Windows four times when I was using Windows 7, and that did me no good. From what I've read, this problem has happened to many people with different graphics cards and drivers. There is no solution that fixes it for everyone. One thing may fix it for someone, but not for another. I know the card isn't dead because the fans still spin and everything, and it will do everything as it's supposed to without drivers installed. Once drivers are installed, it stops working normally. One thing I've noticed is that when drivers are installed, there's a very quiet zapping noise about every five seconds. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm hoping it didn't kill anything. I don't think it did because it still appears to be working just fine. CPU: i5-3570K Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB & G.Skill Ares 8GB Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 (This one) PSU: OCZ MXSP 700W The components shouldn't matter, I've tried putting it in a different machine and I got the same problem. Anyone have an idea of what I should do?
  4. Back in March, I was playing some Civ V. I had to start on my homework, so I hit escape and clicked "Quit to Windows". Well, for some reason, that created a problem with my computer. The screen went black, and I couldn't see anything. Nothing out of the ordinary, this happens every now and then, no big deal, right? It came back, but it came back with a partial checkerboard pattern over top of my desktop. Then my computer bluescreened. I reboot, and it launches back into Windows just fine. However, I can't get it to switch back into aero mode. I restart it to see if it will fix it. This time, however, it will not boot into Windows. I get stuck on a bluescreen. I panic a bit, and I'm not usually one to get scared over broken parts. I get out the tools, screwdriver, flashlight, and then open up the computer. I spent an hour or so just looking at my 7970, poking things, seeing if anything seemed out of place. Nothing. Took it out of the top slot and then put it in the bottom. Tried booting, same problem. I've got no idea what to do at this point, so I put it away for the night and do my homework. The next day after school, I open it back up and pull the graphics card out entirely. I tried booting off of integrated graphics, and now I can get into Windows. However, it freezes up and I have to shut it down again. Freezes every time I try to get into it on integrated graphics. I tried putting the graphics card back in, and the problem returns. So I've narrowed it down to the graphics card not working properly with something. After playing around with it a bit, I found I could boot into Windows with safe mode. I search for the file mentioned, atikmpag.sys, and since it says ATI, I know it's something to do with the drivers. After finding the file, I googled a bit to see if I could find a solution. I read that deleting the file fixed the problem for some, and I tried that. Booting in brought up a different file as the culprit, atikmdag.sys. Deleted it, and now I can get into Windows, but any functionality on the graphics card is gone. Can't play games, aero is unusable, eveything. Thoroughly confused, I put it away for a few days. When I came back, I tried reinstalling the drivers fresh from AMD. I had the latest drivers at the time, which were like 13.1, I believe. It says it needs a reboot in order to have effects, and after trying to reboot, I get a bluescreen again. Delete the files and try again. I installed various driver versions over and over in hopes of fixing the problem, none of them worked. Even tried beta drivers. At this point, I just give up and go us integrated graphics. I've got no idea what the problem is, and after looking online, I found it has happened to many people with many AMD graphics cards and it happens on any driver number. After about a week of playing around with files every now and then, a buddy wants to play Battlefield 3. I try to hook up my 7970, and all of a sudden, everything works all of a sudden. I'm halfway through a game of conquest, and then all of a sudden, bluescreen. No warning this time. My fifteen minutes of functionality (Literally only 15 minutes) were gone. After this, I reinstalled Windows somewhere around five times. It hasn't worked since. I've been running off integrated graphics for two months now, I called AMD like a week after playing Battlefield, and the guy told me my card was dead and I needed to send it back. Except, I'm not under warranty. I bought it back in September. I can't get 100% of my money back. I don't have a license yet, and my dad has been gone every week since Christmas and I've only seen him six times since then. My mom is disabled so she can't drive. I can't find a time to get the post office, but my dad is finally home so I may be able to get there this week. Basically, I haven't been able to send it back. The guy at AMD seems to think it's dead, and I did too for a while. But if this happens to many people, the same problem, different card, different drivers, then how could all of their cards have just died like that? That doesn't make sense.
