  1. I’ve considered DIY but wanted something relatively simple and without much faff. You bring up a very fair point though and have answered my questions, thank you!
  2. My main consideration is cost, I don't want to be spending too much when I effectively just need 4TB extra storage space right now. I'd like to have some parity as I won't have a backup solution but according to Synology's RAID Calculator SHR would give me 4TB usable storage with the 2x2TB + 1x4TB configuration. I'd essentially have to purchase another 4TB drive just to make all this worthwhile.
  3. Would SHR be my only option here, would it not be possible to use RAID 0 for example? Looking at Synology's RAID Calculator, SHR would yield just 4TB usable capacity and put me in the same situation as I am in right now - needing more space.
  4. So for the past 3yrs I've been using the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra w/ 2x2TB WD Red drives in RAID 0. The NAS is primarily used as a Plex server for 800 movies, TV Shows and backing up of my PC but is now completely full (14GB remaining). I am considering purchasing the Synology DS918+, mostly for hardware transcoding of 4K movies and the ability to expand its storage capacity for years to come. If I get the DS918+ and install 1x4TB WD Red - is it possible for me to transfer all 4TB data from the My Cloud NAS to the Synology and then move over the old 2x2TB drives into the Synology, completely phasing out the WD NAS? What would be the best way of achieving this as efficiently as possible, and what RAID options should I consider now I'd effectively have 8TB total and 4TB free storage? I only chose RAID 0 originally for the performance and ability to use the entire 4TB available. All help and opinions on this is greatly appreciated! FYI - I have considered alternative NAS options including building my own but the DS918+ seems the most logical with its 4 bays, expansion capabilities, quad-core CPU and ease/simplicity compared to relying on FreeNAS or something similar... for me it makes the most sense to buy rather than build.
  5. Damn, thanks for letting me know and the link to disassembly. Extremely informative and quite an interesting read too!
  6. So yesterday I ordered all parts for my newest build, a teenie tiny ITX computer with a Corsair SF600 (wanted a SF400 but there was no stock anywhere). Arrived today and I noticed white goop on what I believe is a copper coil. I’m no PSU expert so I have no idea what goes into a PSU but none of my previous builds have ever had this so thought it best to ask you folks before I start powering a GTX 1080 through it. Hopefully my photos show what I’m talking about. Ordered from Amazon so not much of an issue to order a replacement. Thanks
  7. I must admit I've never considered overclocking RAM but I'm definitely looking into Memory Try It thanks for the tip
  8. Ah I did think about that but wasn't sure how much of a difference it would be. Thank you
  9. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Xdvmr6 Here is my current build
  10. I'm building a Mini ITX in the Node 202 (most likely). Trying to save costs anywhere I can so only going with 8GB RAM, only gaming so shouldn't need any more. Not too bothered about being able to upgrade in future so 1 stick or 2 doesn't bother me either. But should I go with this G Skill (2x4GB) which has a lower CAS https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/cLkwrH/gskill-memory-f42400c15d8grr Or this single 8GB stick from Crucial https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/N3yxFT/crucial-8gb-1-x-8gb-ddr4-2400-memory-ct8g4dfd824a I'm considering the Crucial as it has not headspreader and therefore should be easier to deal with in an ITX build. Please let me know your opinions or if you have a better suggestion, I'm all ears.
  11. So [realistically] if I plugged both into my network switch, would it help transfer speeds between my PC and NAS/other PCs on the network, maybe even reliability of connection to the router for broadband?
  12. Any real-world benefit to me plugging both into router/network switch?
  13. I actually thought Intel stopped shipping CPUs with coolers that’s why I added aftermarket one ? thanks for telling me that haha Saved me there so I can look at improving other parts like RAM or SSD ?
  14. Only thing with going 8400 is need a different motherboard and adding cost there as well ?
  15. I’ve been thinking about this and with the extra cost I don’t know if it’s worth it tbh
  16. Wow thank you I’ve never heard of it before. Perfect price too, certainly a strong contender!
  17. Hello fellow nerds, Just sold my Razer Blade 14 and wanting to build myself a small form factor gaming PC for around the £1000-1150 price point. Here is my build so far, https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/KiloAlphaIndigo/saved/jNB3FT Other than the case I’m also going to be looking at tweaking certain things like RAM etc. I don’t care about i7 as it’ll just be used for gaming and no streaming, video editing etc. Just wanting as cheap as possible. However I can’t decide on what case to choose. I want as small as possible without being too restrictive for cooling and not sounding like a jet engine like the Razer Blade I just sold. I understand compromise must be made for ITX but want to find the right balance. Final 2 stipulations are it needs to look nice but doesn’t have to have tempered glass or RGB and want it under £150 (or under £100 if possible!) >oh and it must fit a full sized 1070/1080 Current considerations: Corsair 250D Fractal Node 202 Thanks in advance. Kai
  18. I've considered this in the past but can be quite pricey, looking at around £100 for the microphone, maybe £50/60 for the boom arm and any extras like pop filter and shock mount (if both necessary). Also not sure whether I'd want a big microphone in front of my face when playing games.
  19. Not wanting a headset as I already have a great pair of headphones and simply want a solo mic, this would also be useful for when I don't need headphone on my head, just the mic.
  20. That's huge! Haha and preferably without a battery that I'd have to change/charge every now and again.
  21. I'm needing to buy a new microphone! I've had an idea, instead of having a big and bulky desk microphone (I hate clutter) - for my Skype/TeamSpeak conversations - I was thinking of having something small and discreet, something out of the way and something I don't have to think about, i.e. putting on my head. I've had a look around and I thought a lavalier microphone could do the job, they are small and discreet and you can get really great sounding ones. My thought process is to have the lavalier mic attached to something like the top of my monitor so that it is out of the way and shouldn't pick up much noise from the desk. However, because most lav's are meant for other uses (on clothing for interviews etc.) I am worried that I would not be able to use one for the purpose of speaking to friends on Skype and TeamSpeak whilst in-game. Are there lav's out there that will plug directly into a PC? Can you guys help me find something that will work for my needs but also something that isn't too pricey? I don't want an ultra-cheap solution as it may sound terrible but at the same time I don't feel like spending £200 on a microphone. If you have a solution or alternative for me then I would be grateful to hear P.S. Something with an option to physically mute the mic (button/switch etc) would be even better, alternatively please suggest something else I could use for this?
  22. Thanks guys, is there a particular cooler you would recommend at all?
  23. Hey guys! (first post) I currently have a great gaming rig but it's a bit big for my liking. Therefore I am wanting to transfer my hardware into the Corsair Obsidian 250D I am wanting a small build and as quiet as possible, so I am considering the 250D, Asus Maximus VII Impact and possibly the be quiet! Dark Rock 3. - Probably getting rid of most of my case fans too (Corsair AF and SP) What I am wondering is if I could fit the Dark Rock 3 into the 250D. Does anybody currently have that configuration? Anyone with the 250D, what cooler are you currently using? I'm not overclocking the CPU currently and I don't care for added temperatures in turn for silence. I found http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/ and on there it says that the 250D and Dark Rock 3 are not compatible, I have tried to look at the Dark Rock 3 and I can't tell whether it would fit or not The dimensions for Dark Rock 3 are: (L x W x H) - 97 x 137 x 160mm For comparison I have the EVGA reference GTX 780 (see attached for picture) My current specs Case Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl with Window) Motherboard Asus Maximus VI Formula CPU Intel Core i7 4770K CPU Cooling SilverStone Tundra TD02 GPU EVGA GTX 780 RAM Corsair Dominator Platinum 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz Primary Storage – OS/Programs Samsung 840 120GB Secondary Storage – Media/Other Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB Gaming Storage Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB PSU Corsair AX760 -also getting rid of both my HDDs as I'm soon getting a NAS ---SILENCE IS BLISS If the Dark Rock 3 definitely won't fit in the 250D, what cooler would you guys recommend? I'm not happy with my Tundra TD02 and don't think it would fit due to the thick radiator. I've been looking at the Corsair AIO coolers instead as I want silence and good looks something like the H90 or H75, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance!
