  1. That did it! Turning off the "Turn on fast startup" within the power options in control panel fixed it.
  2. I have been doing some looking and this might be related to Windows 8 and its "hybrid shutdown" thingy that it does. Instead of shutting down the kernel completely, it just hibernates it. However, it doesn't do this on restarts. Just shutdowns. Seems related to my issue at least. I am going to try turning hybrid shutdown off tonight and test it out...
  3. Everything is up to date drivers/bios wise. I get no warnings about bios battery either. It boots normally every time whether its a cold boot or a restart. Also, I've noticed that when I do a restart and things start working properly, I get the attached event log. That log is present for each CPU core within Windows Event Viewer. However, when I do a cold boot and things are not working properly, those even logs don't show up. I'm baffled!
  4. I have an interesting/frustrating issue with my machine. I will try to explain this as best I can... System specs are in my signature and everything is up to date within Windows and all drivers/bios for hardware. When I cold boot the machine, whether its been off for days or just a few seconds, the CPU isn't getting detected properly. Windows task manager detects 1 CPU, 4 cores just like it should. HOWEVER HWiNFO, CPU-Z and MSI Command Center don't like it. HWiNFO will not detect the CPU cores properly. It seems to know they are there, buuuuut not really. It does detect the different temps for each core though... Its weird so I've attached a screen shot labeled "bad" so you can see what I mean. When I try to run CPU-Z, it just hangs at the loading screen because it gets stuck while trying to load the details of the CPU. I've attached a screen shot of that as well. MSI Command Center also fails to load properly when this is going on. Both CPU-Z and MSI Command Center have to be killed in task manager. Now, the only way I have found to fix this issue is to restart my machine. Not shutdown and turn back on but literally just restart. When the machine comes back up, I hear the "new device detected" sound like when you plug something in and then everything works. Task manager doesn't look any different, but after that HWiNFO shows everything properly (mainly the Core #X usage). HWiNFO will also now actually detect the CPU model as well. MSI Command Center runs properly as well as CPU-Z. I am thoroughly stumped on this one. Its easy to fix as I just have to restart my machine real quick, but still. PITA. I've attached the "good" screen from HWiNFO so you can see the difference between the two. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I have restored factory defaults to my motherboard and have looked around to see if there is anything that stands out to me as something that could be confusing my system, but I haven't found anything.
  5. Same here. Should be delivered tomorrow! I think the GD65 offers some really good features for the price. I am glad it doesn't have WiFi and Bluetooth and what not too because I don't want those. $190 is a great price considering what they are offering IMO.
  6. Mine is a long-time nickname. Started off as Tedder which is a nickname my mom used for me growing up. When I got to college people started calling me Tedders out of nowhere (no, they didn't speak with mom) and it has stuck ever since. Mom still calls me Tedder though...
  7. I have 2 WD Reds (1tb versions) in a Synology NAS in Raid0 and they are simply amazing. They are quiet and pretty darn quick (reads over 40MB/s and writes over 32MB/s ... or is it Mbit/s idk ...) and they make no noise and create no heat. The green drives for some reason are pretty bad with premature breaking, but the Reds are rock solid. They use the same Intellipower tech so they spin the same speed and you should see around the same speeds as a Green drive. As for software at work I use Time Machine on my Macs (on my home hackintosh too), Memeo on my Windows PC at work and at home I use FBackup to backup my gaming rig. FBackup is nice because it will backup specific files not just folders which a lot of programs don't.
  8. From what I have read, anything you buy online is applicable and the site has to charge you your states sales tax. One thing that you brought up however that I haven't thought about was international companies. Not sure on that one... Will be interesting to see how this all pans out and how long it will take everything to go into effect.
  9. Tedders

    noob question

I am pretty sure you can't. If you were connecting a 3 pin fan connector to a 4 pin connector then that would be another story.
  10. For the price, my NZXT Sentry 2 is pretty good. I haven't messed with the temperature probe placement yet as I will be tearing the machine down soon, but it works well. The only thing that I've read about it (and this might be the case with all fan controllers) is that there are some compatibility issues with some of the more popular fans out there. Also, it controls only 5 fans, but you can buy splitters and what not.
  11. I have had very good luck with my Hyper 212+ in my hackintosh. Like it so much in fact that I bought a Hyper EVO for my new Haswell gaming rig build. For ~$30 it can't be beat IMO.
  12. Just started following Linus Tech Tips on YouTube and I am really pleased with the content and the way it is presented so I decided to come over here and join! Current machine specs are in my signature. Once Haswell is released I will be upgrading pretty much everything except for my case and video card.
