Canon fucked up the 5d MKIV - 1.74x crop in 4k ......no thanks

A DSLR is going to be primarily a photo camera, always.

Irrelevant and I think incorrect to some degree, Canon were the pioneers of the whole video on DSLRs thing and DSLR shooting video is not just a FAD, but get serious usage, even holywood uses them for things

There is absolutely NO reason a DSLR/Mirrorless camera cannot do both functions

if my iphone can be a camera, video camera, phone, games console, browser and office machine, a still camera can also take quality video - we have the processing power, the sensors, and the focusing systems to do it

ok they dont use a global shutter, but still

If they are going to bother adding 4k and video features, at least do them properly

Man I know the history of HDSLRs just as well as you if not more.  But the thing is... These cameras are still designed with photography as the primary usage.  Canon has an entirely, more expensive, camera line for video.  Their decision in how they implemented the 4K video feature in the 5D4 is a good indicator that they are probably not going to risk canabilizing the sales of the C### camera line.

Also, don't judge the camera by its specs.  Let's see how people use it first.  I want to see how the MJPEG codec for 4K, though it's a very old codec, holds up in a real

    world workflow.

Oh and FYI, Nikon was the pioneer of video in DSLR.  Canon improved and made it mainstream.

I meant pioneer as in the people that pushed it, not necessarily the inventor

All I am saying is, there is no specific reason a DSLR cannot be made into a good video camera, as long as the manufacturer is willing

I honestly dont think the 5d sales would damage the 1d or C sales - they are specialist cameras - and either way, the price of the 5dIV  would still make them a lot of money - Canon are a business with a decreasing market share, they would do well to try compete with others

Heck Nikons new cameras and Sony especially are creaming them, for value, features, video features specs and value for money

I am sure it wont be a "bad" camera, but really not sure of the questionable decisions, a horribly old inefficient codec, a crippled 4k mode , no IBIS etc

there are some good features like 4k 30fps stills capture - great for sports, dual pixel AF is great, and the canon menus and touchscreen etc

I just think, if canon wanted to get back on top, they should have put everything into the MK4 , put some fire under Nikon and Sony for once

Nothing wrong with a crop. Just use a wider lens :P

5D that's too good would damage 1D-C sales, but I doubt it would have any effect on Cx000 series.

But yes, they aren't going to dominate the prosumer video market like they used to. But I'm not sure they want to either.

I am not sure why they wouldnt want to, considering how  many people use and bought a 5dmk3 for video

    Just seems a strange decision

I don't know. I guess they want to focus on photos.

But still include 4k and advertise smooth af in video etc

    Im just baffled really

I have a feeling they chose MJPEG as the codec to sort of compensate for lack of Cinema RAW, as both formats save each frame as an individual image (in their own ways of course, Cinema RAW in separate files while MJPEG all together in a single container).

I also don't see anything wrong with the crop factor, since most video cameras under $20,000 use Super35 format which is approximately the same as APS-C.  The crop factor might also be due to the loss in quality if taking the full 30MP image and scaling it down to 4K in post, which the Nikon D4 suffers from with FHD when using full sensor mode with the 16MP sensor while using APS-C crop mode to capture 1080p resulted in a better image.  The D4 also has better full sensor scan 720p video quality than full sensor scan FHD.

If Canon really wanted to make the 5D into a serious cinematography camera, they should've used a DCI 4K resolution sensor (8.8MP approximately) instead of a 30MP sensor.  Not all higher resolutions scale down well to lower MP versions to match the resolutions of 4K, FHD, HD, etc.

the A7R2 and A7S2 record full frame video, as does the Nikon D5

its an 8k sensor, they could do what sony does with the a6300 with the 6k downsample

  12. ALwin

    ALwin

As I said, the 30MP sensor they chose might not downsample well for 4K, but does so very well for FHD.  As for why they chose 30MP, I have no idea.  The Nikon D800E's 36MP sensor downscales very well to 1080p.

Maybe they don't want a 4K DSLR that could risk sales with a C300 type of camera.

The 5D mk IV doesn't have an 8K sensor.

I just hate when things are purposefully (and obviously) bastardized

I was actually interested in the 5dmk4 if it had full frame 4k as I havnt decided what to do moving forward, but this is now a no go for me so A7R2 is now the only choice unless sony bring an A99 out

Sigh oh well, i dont think they would have damaged their sales at all - really they have only damaged the sales of the 5dmk4 as a video camera to people who wanted full frame
