  1. Hi all! I am stumped. As a preface, I am running a mess of old hardware. I work in IT, so I have a weird collection of scap. I am running Debian (ParrotOS) on a Dell Poweredge T320 (using a RAID controller I pulled out of an old HP server, but I don't think that is relevant ATM). I have quite a few decent monitors, and I could really use more visual real estate, so I pulled out an AMD WX 2100 that has 3 display ports- perfect for what I need. I am not gaming, I just might be remoting into multiple tenants at once.I first updated/upgraded everything I could then restarted, but no display out from the card. I then went to the AMD website and to the letter followed their instructions for installing and initializing the proper driver. Restarted, and now the weird things happen. On first startup, the parrotOS splah screen will show on the monitor connected to the card, then goes black to load the distro and only the onboard display comes back on. Once logged in, only one monitor is listed (the onboard) through if I run lspci and grep for VGA, it lists two devices as it should: the built in controller, and the AMD/ATI Lexa XT [Radeon PRO WX 2100. I imagine I just need a boot argument or to mod a load in config file, but I am not sure what. Any guidance would be appreciated!
  2. Thank you for your replies. I am not sure I can wait until the fall. I am getting regular blue screens or memory issues. After a bit of testing, I have confirmed that my CPU is on its way out (I in no way fault Intel for this, I regularly overheated this CPU when I first installed due to a mismounted cooler (it was my first build)) What are your feelings on an i5-10600k?
  3. Hello All! I have been using an i7-4770k since it was first released, literally (I got a day 1 discount at the local microcenter at the time). It has been a mighty CPU, but I am fairly confident that after 7+ years of overclocked, pushed hard performance, it is finally reaching its end. I have a completely overkill power supply, as well as a 5700XT graphics card. It seems my upgrade really "just" needs to cover the CPU, MOBO and 16-32 GB of RAM. My budget is ~$500. I can push this a bit, but I am aiming to stay at or below this number. My microcenter has a 3700X for $259, which seems like an attractive place to start, but I don't really know. I have been out of the loop for a while, which is where I would like your help. I really have no brand allegiance, just whatever is the best fit for this machine. It mostly games, but it also does some HTPC work. It is a general jack-of all-trades type system. This computer's priorities are as such: 1. Game (1440p, Mostly racing games, but I also do minecrafting with 200+ mods) 2. Tab Monster. 4. Video: Streaming, Blu-Ray, etc. 3. Boring Excel and Word Processing work. Thank you for your help! I will be sure to post what I buy (looking to make the purchase this weekend)
  4. Okay, good to know it is easy. Anyone know what I should ask for to make sure there is no downtime for his website? We need the transition to be as smooth as possible.
  5. Hello! Thanks for your help! A family member has a wordpress website that is used to post information about his business (employees, hours, that sort of thing) as well as blog posts. He has asked me if I can take over the day to day maintaining of this website. I am a die hard software guy, but website development is new to me. That being said, he is paying A LOT of money for "please change the hours from 7-6 this season" and that kind of thing. So my question is, how hard is it to learn how to do just this? And if I agree to help him out, what do I need to ask for from the company who built the website, and currently maintains it? Thanks!
  6. This would be really cool to use for audio engineering work, because rather then needing 12 monitors all around my large studio workspace, I could project my work onto a large wall, and see it all around the room, , which would be SO MUCH more efficient.
  7. It NEVER even occurred to me that buying an AMD GPU compared to a similarly priced Nvidia could affect performance much. I appreciate your time, before I go and spend this much money (and I know this has potential to start an argument), does going with AMD here verses Nvidia really matter that much? Thanks again!
  8. Thank you everyone for your time. On the concept of thermal throttling, the highest I EVER got (and this was not even gaming, this was in rendering) was around 83*C, so nothing too high. I should not, i live in the mountains with very cool ambient temperatures, and I have pretty aggressive fans, so my temperatures are usually pretty fantastic.
  9. Sorry, I totally meant to post that. CPU: i7-4770k Mobo-some Asus builder's board, I forgot the model, but it was top of the line in 2012, I can open it up if that matters to you guys. Power Supply: EVGA Supernova 1000w G2 power supply SDD: Kingston HyperX 120gb HDD: Western Digital Green 1tb OS: Windows 8.1 And since someone mentioned it, I have a Corsair h100i cpu cooler.
  10. With the coming of new games, it is time for me to work on my gear. My current graphics card is a pretty heavily overclocked R9 280. (The XFX double Dissipation edition) http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16814150678 I was playing Far Cry 2 and similar aged game, and I was more then adequate FPS (80/90+) on highest settings. However, I bought the newest Far Cry, and on tweaked (turning of shadowing and such) medium, I can barely play it. So I need to upgrade, especially with the new titles coming out requiring crazy cpu power, and I have a decent budget ($1k) so my question is this. Do I: A: buy another XFX r9 280 and crossfire Or B: a whole new rig. My motherboard really doesn't have open PCI slots for more then 2 graphics cards open. Thanks as always! You guys are great!
  11. In case you guys need it, here is my full computer specs. CPU: i7-4770k (overclocked) CPU cooler: H100i GPU- DUAL r9-280x Asus Xonar soundcard SDD: Kingston HyperX 120gb HDD: Western Digital Green 1tb My MOBO is an Asus builder's board. I can't remember the exact model, I can look if it is relevant.
  12. Hello! You guys are always great help and as a semi-amateur builder, I have run into an unusual(?) issue after some computer upgrading. This is on a personal computer I use primarily for gaming (thank goodness this isn't my work computer!). It has 2 storage drives. A 120 SSD (Kingston HyperX), and a 1tb western Digital Green drive. Both are formatted for NTSF. I use the SSD for strictly my OS and 1 single game. Absolutely everything else I install/download goes on the green drive (hopefully soon to be a black drive). Now here comes the problem. I was running windows 8, however my ssd had become pretty full, and has slowed down due to excessive drivers and things of that nature (It has been with me through a couple builds) So I bought a fresh install of windows 8.1, completely reformatted my SSD to make sure nothing was left behind, and installed 8.1 Everything seems to be running perfectly, with one catch. All of the sudden, interacting with my 1tb drive is excessively slow. It takes INSANE amounts of time to open certain folders, and programs will hang because of what appears to be slow read times. Did I mess something up in my upgrading the windows some how? Any help at all would be appreciated, the computer is practically unusable in its current state. Thanks!
  13. For anyone wondering, the actual audio engine card is not available for the open market yet, but it is in beta, very closely related to the new card RME put out, the HDSPe MADI FX. The only real difference is the number of channels the prototype can handle. It only takes up one PCIe slot on the mobo, but two slots in the case.
  14. Thanks for the input! The reason I did not put a sound card in the initial listing is because I already own a specialized audio card the my job provided (it only takes up one PCI slot on the mobo) that links to other specialized components. I guess it has been a while since I built a comp, I thought that the 2tbs of data/program files would be too much to put in a computer, I never realized I could have both my programs and my audio captures in the same place! (For an older guy like me, single hdds that hold over a tb by themselves blow my mind. I have 5 external hdds that I work off of)
  15. Hey guys! This forum and Linus' videos have helped me more times then I can say, and now, I have what I think is a fun project. My professional job is I am an audio engineer for a classical record label. So I get direct tracks recorded at mainly 3 large concert halls, and I master them down into one finished track that gets picked up and spun into a cd. My system is seriously outdated, and I have been saving for a new system for a few years. I them found out I can actually use a significant amount of money from the business discretionary fund into this project. While I have built a few systems before, this is on another level from my usual tech work, so I thought I would post up my requirements, and hope you guys could help steer me in the proper direction. Thanks again! My requirements: I am often working with many audio tracks (24+). While I do most of the work though headphones, when I am finishing the product, as well as reviewing it with my colleges, I listen though hi-fidelity monitors. My computer, has to be NEAR SILENT. I will need a discrete graphics card, my audio equipment is multiple $1000's, so I would prefer not to skimp in this field and risk interference. I run a multiple monitor setup (3 wide screens) , though I do not do much gaming on this rig, so I am not sure how important a graphics card is. Disk space. I am plugged into a server right now, but the projects I work on can be tb+ them selves, if I could have one project on my computer at a time, that would be a DREAM. My budget cap is $5k, but if I do not HAVE to use it all, I would prefer not to. Thanks for everything, and have fun with this.
