  1. So I have spent the better part of 2 weeks (in my free time) trying to sort out what exactly is going on with this thing. Let me air out this story for some context. I had purchased this kit off of eBay almost as soon as I had seen the posting. It was a solid price ($551USD) and already had the upgraded Sunrich S-331 backplane so I was pretty stoked that there really wouldn't be anything for me to do beside have fun... Specs - 1 x SuperMicro X9SRH-7TF 1 x Intel Xeon E5-1620V2 4 x Hynix HMT31GR7CFR4C-PB 8GB DDR3 3 x PI49230-2X2B 2 x PSM-5760V Fast forward to today and it's honestly been a huge headache. Initially after the first boot, I was having issues with the board either not detecting my keyboard or locking up entirely. So I had spent some time reading the manual and had sorted out howe to reset the BIO to factory defaults. So I did what anyone else does and I pulled the motherboard and found that there were a 2 standoffs that didn't correlate to any holes so I had assumed the board maybe had died. Reached out to the seller to request a new board ands the sent one over. Out of curiosity I put the board on a test bench to tinker around and behold it boots? I thought ok, maybe that wasn't the issue, after a quick bios check, and adding one PCIe card it would bios lock, so I had assumed ok maybe it is dead. New board arrived, and I had assembled it in the chassis(after removing the problematic standoffs) I verified a few times that everything was in order before booting and on first boot it boot locks...again.. seemingly on bios code B4. I have since spent 4 hours along with a few friends troubleshooting various things and still no luck. Ubuntu doesn't recognize any drives (attached to the board directly or to the backplanes) and it still will lock up during post for some unknown reason. The board is on BIOS version 3.0 and the new version don't have any relevant updates so here I am, asking if anyone else has had this issue. Not sure what else to try, the backplanes don't work with my desktop (No Post) and directly adding the drive bypassing the backplanes also yields no success. Thanks in advance and hopefully I'm just an idiot :/ IMG_2155.HEIC IMG_2137.HEIC
  2. Thats a great example. Right now I only have 2 VPNs, one for my game servers and one for remote access when I'm away. I would like to be able to keep this kind of customization. I was just unsure if i would be able to migrate my current solution to a USG. I love PFsense dont get me wrong, but it is the one oddball in my network of Unifi equipment. I havent really played around with a VDSL or pfBlockerNG. I do have Suricata installed and its been working great. Would I be opposed to keeping my current PFsense box, no not at all, but I would like to update it to the SG3100 in the near future if I did. Now that I have seen what you have done, I think that PFsense might be the route that I go. I will say I don't have a lot of experience with PFsense, but that can always change.
  3. What I mean by tinker is just playing around with new things and devices. I would have no desire to implement it into my current network infrastructure.
  4. This is great information!! After hearing about you using it in an enterprise environment, it tells me a lot about the performance I might expect from the box at home. While I wont have the load that an enterprise does, I do expect to get my fill gigabit pipe.ON a side note, I have really gotten past the tinkering phase, and if I wanted to tinker I'd just set up a new network for it instead of constantly playing with my live environment. Thanks for the feedback!!
  5. Ok, so I am looking to replace my current firewall (home built PFsense box) and I have narrowed down my choices to two. I am looking at either an SG-3100 or a USG Pro-4. I have some networking experience and I believe that either one can meet my network requirements, but I don't have any experience with the Unifi Security Gateways. I currently have Openvpn, Suricata and PIA setup on my pfsense box. I have a full gigabit connection to my apartment (its copper so I average like 600 mbps) I know that I can setup OpenVPN and PIA on a USG so I'm not worried about those services. I also have a Unifi 24port switch in my network. My questions is will I be taking a step back by moving over to a USG or will I get the same functionality out of the device. I don't have any problems with PFsense, but I'd like to have the control over my network like Unifi allows. Hopefully that all makes sense.
  6. Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark score requirements are a good guideline for the following average source file: 4K HDR (50Mbps, 10-bit HEVC) file: 17000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p) 4K SDR (40Mbps, 8-bit HEVC) file: 12000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p) 1080p (10Mbps, H.264) file: 2000 PassMark score 720p (4Mbps, H.264) file: 1500 PassMark score The CPU Benchmark website is a good resource to see what sort of PassMark score a particular processor received. This is what I based my Plex build off of. I dont do any 4k transcoding in my environment yet thought.
  7. Only have licensing for 2012 otherwise I would use 2016, I'm going to worry about permissions later after the move. I assumed I would need to have at least some downtime for sync
  8. Has anyone had experience moving data from a Freenas share to Windows storage spaces? I could just copy and paste, but it is live data so multiple people will have files open given at any given time. It amounts to almost 2tb worth of data. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  9. Is it possible to stack 2 pi 3s into a cluster for more performance on the hub? Considering a large amount of cameras. Thanks!
  10. Also he only reason I need to reapply is because in order to properly clean the fans in my laptop is to take off the heatsink. I normally hold he fans and use compressed air, but I have had thermal throttle issues. And boy, was there some dust bunnies trapped.
  11. That was one of my concerns, I'll only be applying it once but it's the only paste I have. I don't have bare dies though so your advice is solid.
  12. So I'm setting here with my laptop disassembled, and I'm trying to decide on he best way to reapply my thermal compound. All I have is IC Diamond which by my experience is the most difficult to apply as far as good coverage. Anyone have some good advice on applying to CPU and GPU dies in a laptop?
  13. Seems to be a common response, kinda bummed.
  14. Is it possible to separate audio sources that get mixed on the desktop? What I am having difficulty doing is whenever I record gameplay, discord gets mixed with the game audio. I'd like to keep these separated if possible, I have done a lot of research but haven't found a solution that works.
  15. Productivity mostly with a little content creation but nothing super professional.
  16. That's actually a fair point..but I can't find a decent ultrawide with vesa mount.
  17. Looking for a nice ultrawide monitor that can be turned vertical. I've done a little googling but nothing that I wanted turned up.
  18. I'm running Resonant Rise on 1.7.10. It's currently running on an R710 with 2 X5660s. I average 4 players but sometimes it can be as high as 8 players which is closed to just my friends. I figured that I had the power but apparently it's not? I've tried to troubleshoot why but it definitely comes down to single core performance or discIO.
  19. I did consider the 8350k, not sure why I didn't mention it above.
  20. Im looking at moving my Minecraft server from a Vm on my R710 to a dedicated box because of performance issues. I've been looking at getting a Asrock Deskmini 110 and am trying to decide on what CPU to get. Since minecraft is a heavily single threaded application, I need the best single threaded performance possible. I also don't have a massive budget because I am purchasing the rest of the equipment for my home lab. I am looking at either the 7600k or a 6600k. Im open to other options and suggestion, but these two according to Passmark only share a less that 200 point difference. I'm not sure how that relates to real world performance difference. Thanks!
  21. I would go with the tower, unless you have a rack. You'll have better cooling with less noise.
  22. What would you suggest for a setup where each server in the cluster will be running at most 12 VMs? I would think ISCSI would have enough bandwidth to run that.
  23. My cards are rated at 8gbps. I did give iSCSI a thought but it's not as fast as fibre. I realize this doesn't matter in a home setup but if i could do fiber then yay. If not then iSCSI will work just fine for my application.
  24. Not really any reason to have it other than I already have 2 cards. This is going to be for a home lab setup. The goal I'm going for is fail over clustering, having one server die, the vms will be hosted on the san so the other server in the cluster can pick them up and keep going. I realize this is overkill for a home setup but it's really fun stuff. If need be I can post the visio diagram I made of my rack setup.
  25. So I have 2 Emulex 12002-e fibre cards that came with the R710 i just bought. I plan on buy 2 more and setting them up in a cluster, then attaching them to a san I plan on building. Is it possible to set up a fibre channel network that isn't expensive. "Less than $600". I have the basic understanding of setting one up at least I think. Thanks!!
