  1. Thank you everybody for your suggestions, I have gone ahead and ordered the parts! I'll drop an update here once it's built
  2. Budget (including currency): £1500 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Modern AAAs, modded Skyrim, Photoshop Other details: No existing parts, don't need peripherals, upgrading from 2012 Alienware pre-built, buying within the week, comfortable assembling it, (1440p@144Hz) Hello everyone, I'm completely out of touch with the PC part market and am looking for advice on the build outlined above. I don't have any cases in mind so suggestions are welcome! (not too big, cheapish, black, simple) Thank you!
  3. I know plenty of people have asked this before but I haven't found any clear answers in the admittedly small amount of research I have invested. I would like to host a TeamSpeak 3 server behind a VPN so people cannot DDOS me etc. Am I wrong in thinking they will not be able to DDOS me because they will be attempting to DDOS a VPN provider's server farm with extremely fast internet? Anyway, is this possible? I use no-ip.com currently for my domain. Are there any hoops to jump through etc?
  4. I know this is very general etc, but what do you guys think about using this for a FreeNas build? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172373449777?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I wouldn't use the included 1tb harddrive and I could get it for £170 (About $200) I would use it for general file and media storage and backups for the PCs in my house. I would RAID 1 and use 2 2tb hard drives. (This is possible right?) The CPU scores 6015 on CPU Benchmark I like using Plex for streaming films, how many concurrent 1080p streams could this cpu handle? Could it handle a single 4K stream? (I realise this may be a hard question to answer) Cheers
  5. I know you said you shouldn't try this unless you know what you're doing, but how would my vlan and trunk ports be set up to do what I want. I say I'm a noob, I have some understanding of networking principles. Most of this is to mess around and see what I can do.
  6. Okay, thank you for your advice. "a more down to Earth connection" that's brilliant
  7. It would be set up on a Chromebox with a single ethernet port. I would like to go with pfSense because of the features/addons such as Squid, ad blocking, VPN server etc. I know all of this can be run a a Linux box but I never seem to have much luck when it comes to that kind of thing. I like that it's renound for it's firewall security stuff etc. I could buy and ER-X, but I have a Chromebox lying around and don't want to spend any money. Haha and yeh, Linus made many videos on it.
  8. Can I set up a pfSense router on a PC with a single ethernet port. I was thinking it might be possible if I set up VLANs on the switch. For example: VLAN 1: Passing internet connection through to pfSense Common LAN: Just the local side of the pfSense box I'm a noob if you haven't noticed, so help appreciated Update: Just found this, but they don't actually say whether it worked or not https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=62315.0
  9. I would like to buy a second Ubiquiti access point for my house. I would like one SSID for both of the APs. I would like zero hand off when walking between each of the AP's coverage. Do I need to do any special configuration in the UniFi controller for this to work? Help appreciated.
  10. I want to make a vlan on my network when I buy the ER-X where the client can only access the internet between certain hours of the day. Can the ER-X do this on a vlan basis
  11. Thank you very much. That's told me everything I want to know.
  12. Anyone ever installed OpenVPN on an OVH VSP. For £2.50 I get a low power and low storage VPS but enough to run VPN. Do they allow VPN traffic and would it even be worth it? As in would they keep everything a secret essentially? It is only £2.50 and I get a fixed ip address and 100mbits unlimeted
  13. When you set up multiple networks on a single Ubiquiti access point, would there be slight interference between them and therefore slower speeds as there would be if I used 3 separate APs for example?
  14. Using quote marks on heavy give me a break I live in England (was just on holiday in Ontario it's a very nice btw) Well by my standards that's heavy. Anyway thanks for the replies, very helpful.
