  1. Hi all, So I have been working on a project with the goal to build my computer into my desk. Everything was going well, I created my 24-pin and 8-pin cables for the motherboard and had the pc posting using internal graphics, and a sata power cable (OEM) for the ssd and hdd. I then create a 6-pin, 8-pin, and two sata power cables for powering the graphics card, ssd, and hdd respectively. Since the graphics card is mounted beside the motherboard I have a PCI-E riser cable to make that connection. Anyway, I now have all my cables plugged in and the pc should boot right? Sadly no, I have no power button for this build yet so I press the power button on the motherboard its self. First press the led numbers on the board shows the number 00 for maybe half a second before the pc turns off, second press and nothing happens, no led light up not even for a second. I tried a few more times to see what would happen and most of the time absolutely nothing happens but maybe 1 in every 7 presses the 00 will show up for no more then a second before turning off. Knowing that the problem must be due to one of my newer custom cables I disconnected the graphics card and I went back to a power sata that came with my motherboard. Having had that exact set up booting previously I hoped this would boot, but nope. Next I removed my 24-pin and 8-pin cables from the motherboard and plugged in the OEM cables, still same problem no signs of booting most the time, then occasionally 00 will show for a second before turning off. My first thought is that I must have short circuited the motherboard some how, but I don't see how I could have done that since I tested 24 and 8 pins previously and they worked with no problem. I only plugged new cables into the drives and the graphics card, could a faulty cable not plugged into the motherboard cause the motherboard to short? That wouldn't make sense to me, but hey that's why I'm here, I don't know whats happening. I want to keep diagnosing this problem, but I don't want to start swapping components if I have faulty cables since that would cause me to destroy even more hardware. What I am currently thinking is to buy a power supply tester and test each cable. I'm assuming something must be wrong with one of them which would have caused this. Once all the faulty cables are found I'll fix them, and try to boot with the same hardware but with fixed cables. If the pc still doesn't boot, and I am confident in my cables, I can start swapping out some components until I find the faulty component. I guess at which point I will have to replace whatever I destroyed (which must be the motherboard if anything right?). The power supply is a 750 so power shouldn't be a problem, but none of the components should be an issue as this project is using all old hardware that all use to run together with no issue, all I was doing was mounting everything to some wood and creating some custom length cables. Basically, I'm wondering if any of you guys have an idea of what might have caused a lasting issue that even after going back to OEM cables the pc won't boot. Do you have an suggestions on how to correctly diagnose the issue? Do you think my plan of testing the cables and then trying new hardware is a smart approach or would you suggest something different? Any input is greatly appreciated, Michael
  2. I have been thinking about a desk build for quite a while and now I am actually doing it. For this build I needed custom length cables and since I wasn't willing to pay the expensive prices found online, I decided to sleeve the cables myself. Guess what I learned, sleeving is still hella expensive even doing it yourself. Anyway I have completed my 24pin cable and wanted to know how to confirm I did everything correctly and I have a few questions as well. Below are three pictures of my cable, the front, back and a single wire not plugged into the connector. In the 24pin I skipped one wire on the underside, this leads right into the first question. Are there diagrams somewhere to show you how to wire up each type of cable? In my build I have a graphics card which requires a 6pin and an 8pin, motherboard 24pin and 8pin, hdd and ssd which both require sata power, and a fan power board which requires molex. 6 and 8pins seem quite straight forward to me as they both require to be filled with wires. However for the sata power and molex I noticed that they are missing 1 and 2 wires receptively. After searching around online a while I haven't been able to find any diagrams of how to wire up the sata and molex and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. Secondly, once every cable is completed how can I confirm everything works, can I use a multi meter to make sure their is voltage running through correctly? (sorry if that's a dumb question I'm new to electronics). I was reading earlier that a mess up in the cable can cause permanent damage to components (for obvious reasons) and I really don't want that to happen so I'm trying to be as careful as possible. Thanks for any help !
  3. How do I go about setting up an antenna for something like this?
  4. After some more research I was wondering if it was possible to have a mini pcie (the card I currently have) to pci adaptor which has a built in antenna. Would something like this work? Also does something like this even exist? I have looked online for a while for this and have come up empty handed however I might just be looking for the wrong thing. If anyone could help me out that would be wonderful.
  5. I was afraid that was the case, during my google search it seemed to me that I had found a laptop card. Oh well not a huge loss.
  6. Hi, So I am a university student and I just built a new pc. The problem is there are no Ethernet ports at my school so I need some form of a wifi card to access the internet. My motherboard has a mini pci port on it (part list can be found here: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/HRVfkL) . So after I knew I could go with a mini pci card I looked around for one and it turned out that I had access to this card, http://www.ncix.com/detail/intel-wifi-link-6300-633an-hmwwb-1a-56115.htm, or one very similar anyway. My problem came when I put the card in the computer then booted it up there was no option for wifi. Clearly I need a driver for this but I had no disk to go with the card and I couldnt find any information online. Does this card work with a desktop computer, and if it does how do I set it up? Thanks, Michael
  7. It seems like a solid build, and in the end of the day if your happy with it then it really doesn't matter what other people think right!
  8. what program are you using for your renders?
  9. I am looking to get a new keyboard to go with the new gaming machine I am building (http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/wHn4Jx). This keyboard is a much needed upgrade as my current keyboard is a rubber dome membrane and I split monster on it so a couple keys stick... Here are a few things that I want in this keyboard: - Mechanical (I don't know which switch I want yet but I'm thinking brown since I am a student so ill be typing a lot, as well as gaming) - Blue led back lit (I want the keyboard to match my new build) - Media keys, this is very important to me, must have volume up, down, play, pause. (This is the only reason why I am not getting a ducky) - Ideally doesn't have a number pad, however if I does then this isn't a big deal - No more then $150 Canadian. Thanks for your guys help as I am pretty useless when I try to research keyboards since I know so little about them.
  10. So I have a minor obsession (some might call it an addiction) to Monster Energy drinks. As I am currently in the market for a new PC, I thought what would be better then a Monster Energy themed build?! Well the answer is simple, NOTHING! So I can handle picking the parts, building the PC, converting a drawing into a cut path (this will take a drawing and turn it into a case), and even cutting out the table (I have unlimited access to high end AXYZ CNC machines [im the son of the owner of AXYZ ]). My only down fall is the fact that I am far from an artist... my artistic ability is zero. What I am wondering is anyone interested in an artistic project? What I am looking for is a few drawings of the the exterior of a case (the 4 side, I can figure out the interior). I think it would be cool to have some layering of material to create a 3D textured surface. I would probably want to stick to a black and green color scheme for the case (maybe an accent color somewhere somehow, your the artistic im sure you guys will figure something out thats cool!). I would like to have monster logo included at least once (maybe in several different places, totally up to you). A bit more information about the plan Im thinking an ATX size mother board for it if you want to know that but basically I want to keep it a pretty standard case size. As for any major holes (Power supply mounts motherboard stuff all the wholes in the back and such) I can work out for myself. Mainly im just looking for some drawings (on paper or drawn on the computer whatever works for you) that show a basic look all the sides of the case with a window in the side of the case. Well if anyone is interested on taking on a project like this let me know and if you need any further detail let me know and we can see what we can do together! This is the logo but you can find more pictures by doing a quick google search for Monster Energy. Thanks, Michael
  11. Fun fact of the day, my dad owns and started AXYZ I also work there during the summer as a computer programmer so when I saw those pictures it made me excited.
  12. Out of curiousity do you know if the CNC router used to cut the case in this picture is an AXYZ router table?
  13. If I should be installing programs to the ssd I think I should go with a 512 GB SSD to make sure that it doesnt get filled as I am in CS and I will need several different programs installed for school as well as several programs for enjoyment. What 512GB (or around that size) SSD would you guys recommend?
  14. So a quick back story, I'm 18 years old living in Canada going to Wilfred Laurier University for Computer Science. Its time for a new machine as the first PC I built was when I was in grade 9 (4 years ago). When I built the computer, I built it for as cheap as I could and cut corners I shouldn't have cut, anyway a friend of mine is going to buy the old PC from me so I dont mine buying a whole new rig instead of upgrading. The plan is to keep the PC between $1500 and $2000. I am currently using one 27" 1080p monitor, however I have another 27" 1080p monitor at home. I only have one currently because my desk at school isnt big enough for two, so next year I may be using both monitors with my new build. I am also toying with the idea of buying a 2k res screen (in which case I would sell the other two monitors and only have the one 2k display). I want to make sure that my new build is able to withstand two 27" 1080p screens or a 2k screen (probably 27") so I have the choice to do what I want. This PC will be used for gaming and just general purpose use. The current components I am thinking about are the following (all prices are in the Canadian dollar): Case: NZXT H440 Mid Tower (probably blue) - $130 CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k (planning on overclocking a bit) - $260 Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 ATX - $190 Memory: Kingston Hyper Fury 16GB (Black or Blue) - $176 GPU: XFX Radeon R9 290X - $400 Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 80 Plus Gold 850W (Modular) - $130 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB - $60 SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB - $144 Components: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/DHDnjX The SSD will have windows 8.1 or windows 10 tech preview on it as well as a few games that I am playing the most (probably shadow of moridor and assassins creed unity), the HDD will be holding most of my games as well as all of my files and programs. I want to try to make this build more upgradable then my last build was, that's why I am looking at a ATX board as well as the case I picked (plus I like the look of that case). I am doing this if I ever want to add another GPU or liquid cool my whole machine but neither of these ideas are in the near future, just something I might do in the future. One question I am wondering about is, do I need 16GB of memory for gaming or would 8GB satisfy this build? I am also wondering about after market cooling for the CPU, what is a good cooler for my money, do I need an after market cooler or will the stock heat sink satisfy a bit of over clocking? Finally will all of these components work well together or is there anything you guys would recommend I change to decrease cost and/or increase performance? Any advice you can give me to help me build the best machine I can within my budget is greatly appreciated! Thanks a tone, Michael
