Tldr: I don't have a lot of money but came across some so I want to use it to buy two of my brothers each a CHEAP but still half decent usb headset for Xmas. (USA, $30~ each or $60) Full length plus obligatory sob story: Hey guys, I was hoping to see if anyone had a list of or links to some reviews of some cheap gaming headsets. Two of my brothers asked for gaming headsets this year for Xmas (one has one but it was from a peripheral combo and is falling apart, the other is getting his first gaming pc for xmas and the rest of my family has everything covered except that). Obviously if cheap was on the mind I would just order anything that was cheap and had LEDs but I really do like to put effort into my Xmas presents for my family every year. In fact typically cheap isn't even on the mind and I splurge for them (last year I bought one brother a gpu and another a new case and hard drive since I'm "The computer guy") but this year with *the thing* I lost my service job and have been on unemployment for basically this whole time. While I got the stimulus check and unemployment bonuses I ended up using most of that money to pay bills/rent ahead to ensure I have those covered so I'm low on on-hand-funds. I managed initially to get a couple under-the-table gigs and use that to buy my family some of the smallest things on their list's, put together some dollar store gift bags, etc but I got another bit of cash just the other day and want to use it for this for the headsets. Unfortunately looking up: "cheap gaming headset" usually brings up reviews of things around $40-$60 and since I don't use Amazon I don't always get the deal pricing anyway. I'm hoping to do one of two things: A) Find two $30 headsets for each of them or B) Find a $40 headset and a $20 headset, the $40 for the older one and $20 for the younger since it's his first PC and hes only 10. Again I know I can just buy any cheap thing but I'm particularly hoping to see if anyone has a "hey you know I bought this cheap thing and it turned out great" story so I can at least have some chance of winning the "cheap Chinese product lottery" so to speak or even just a crazy good online deal I missed from Microcenter or Newegg or w/e. Bearded Linus is the Linus I've always wanted. I've always appreciated the youthful Linus of yesterday and just feel like him having a beard is symbolic of a new era of Linus in someway. Yeah you know it's come to my attention that less than ever there is a need for this (of course depends on who you are) so I'm hoping it doesn't end up being all that necessary but i can recall a time where I was the "friend who ran Linux" when we'd all get online to play games and I brought everyone down to my level. Again I've heard this has gotten better....but probably still not an ideal solution. But I could be surprised!

I see. It is apparent that I have very much more research to do regarding this topic and I'm afraid that it is extending past what I am willing to investigate atm. Again my purpose of this thread was just about the ability to VM boot off of a drive. With that said I appreciate your help and it is fortunate that my parts for the system will not arrive for some time so I do have time to do more research and will certainly bother you again when/if I find the need.

While I don't intend on that use case that's certainly and interesting thing to think about as I'm planing on dual booting windows for gaming (at least for when I'm intending to play with friends for best experience) but perhaps I could do something similar where if I find Vm usable for a scenario then I'll just do that and limit having to actually turn off my computer.......though that's a whole another can of worms.

Perhaps I should note that I intend on the Main OS being Linux as well (Deciding between Manjaro or Ubuntu as I have more experience with Ubuntu but really like Manjaro's interface, aesthetic, ect out of the box). But while performance is a concern to me I'm curious to know how much it'll matter in my particular use case. Would the performance be that much different using one or the other? Security is also a big question since I'm VMing for that reason...but maybe that is unnecessary to ask since it's all VMing.

Well that's good to know. I see your point about driver issues and that is a concern. While Linux definitely comes off as more adaptable to this sort of thing I'm sure it too will have some issues with it....perhaps it depends on what I can do about it/how easy that would be to deal with if that problem arises.

Definitely banking on this. I'm sure in a scenario with Windows this would be more of a headace.

Well I suppose for all intents and purposes you've answered my question. But let's say both Qemu/Kvm and VMWare ESXi can do it. Any reason to choose one over the other? Features, overhead, user friendless, etc?

Sorry for leaving this topic to rot. I ended up giving up on this and finding another solution for what I was intending to do with the Samba Share. Consider it closed.

Not 100% sure if this is where this belongs. My rational is: Asking If a program (Say Vmware or virtualbox) can do this thing involving a hard drive with an operating system on it. I've very lightly used (maybe better to say tried?) Virtual machines in the past but never seen or heard of this use case so I wanted to see if it's possible as I will be consolidating my various lightweight/main computers/experiences into one computer that I will be building soon once the parts arrive. Basically I have a Lenovo mini computer running Ubuntu server 18.04 that I use to run my Minecraft Server. I am pretty sure I am capable of just creating a VM with clean Ubuntu, transfer the necessary files over, etc and do it that way. But I'm curious if it would be possible to plug my MC Ubuntu Server hard drive into my New computer via sata and just set up the VM to boot off of that drive as is. I figure I would intend on having that drive used exclusively for the Minecraft Server anyway so if this is possible then why not? Any info on this topic would be much appreciated. Thank you.

When attempting to access with the Ubuntu Server I get "failed to retrieve share list from server: no route to host"

Everything is set to browse able....I even noticed some paths were off (just /home/user/ as opposed to /home/actualusername/ so adjusted those. Still no dice.

I made them per the article. There's one 'caleb' in place of 'josh' (from the tutorial) and then sadmin which they said to make too

I did set up users per the instructions and there's a folder containting them..unless I did something else wrong? Secondly I tried the smb://SAMBABOOK/ on the hosting computer and it said connection refused. While doing that I noticed it showed itself under the networks tab and I tried that way, same results. So it can even connect/see its own shares?

Can't find anything that just straight up says "Mac os 10.13.3 supports smb3" however there are a few threads discussing configuring smb3 and it's preformance under the operating system so I would figure it does support it.

Okay so I tried to connect to it with another computer of mine running Ubuntu Server 18 (used as a Minecraft server with the lubuntu gui ontop I can't remember what it's actually called) after installing samba. It's situation is exactly the same. See but no touch. However the error is that "connection refused". But what would I do to fix that? Is it samba refusing or a network thing? I did open the firewall for it. Interestingly once samba was installed the Ubuntu Server computer showed up as gameserver (it's actual name) on the imac and didn't seem to have any issue connecting to it (of course nothing was set up so I couldn't log in as any one and going in as guest showed blank but there was no errors). Although that could be something different entirely.

Long story short I'm trying to connect my 2009 Imac (MacOs 10.13.6) to my PopOs Samba share (Ubuntu 18.04) on my lenovo yoga book locally. I used this tutorial: https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-and-configure-samba#1-overview So everything appears to have gone as it said it should. I saw on my finder window under 'Shared' SAMBA24 which I recognized under the smb.conf so I tried connecting but it keeps giving me the "cannot connect to server maybe it doesn't exist or you typed in the ip wrong" blah blah blah. So I changed the name of the samba under smb.conf just to see what would happen and sure enough the name under 'Shared' in finder changed...but can't connect. I tried doing it manually by hitting >go>connect to server> and typing every version of smb://ip/ or smb://ip/sambashare that I could think of and nothing. It certainly isn't an issue of them seeing each other because of the name being able to change and my Popos laptop can access a samba share on my mac if I set it up....but that's not what I'm trying to do. Further more I have tried doing research on the smb.conf to see if there's anything I was supposed to mess with but besides interfaces and host allow nothing else would make sense to do (ontop of that I'm afraid attempting to mess with those has only made things worse). I need help to say the least. Could this be an issues of something I'm unaware of like PopOs having their own weird configuration that I just clashed with my set up or that this guide is out of date? Could it even be my mac? Please and thank you ahead of time that's really all the info I can give atm. Thank you in advance.

Another thing. Currently at "Idle" (MC server running but no active users) The cpu is sitting at 55c-57c

I have not yet tried that. I guess I could see how it does later, but I wouldn't consider that as a permit solution.

It isn't rivited shut all around so I was easily able to look inside by just moving a single screw. It's bought used and very recently. The interior was nearly perfectly clean beside the fan having a small amount of surface level dust, which I did clean. I'm convinced it's more a matter of workload/size issue as I'm sure it's really only meant to run browsers/word processors efficiently not a mc server that occasionally gets a spike in load.
