It's all relative though. For somebody making 30k a year, yeah it's a lot of money. For somebody making 80k+ a year, it's not very much. I think upgrading every year isn't a smart idea, but who said that this hobby was all that smart. If we were truly smart, we would instead spend our time learning foreign languages and Python.

I would use it for gaming primarily. Perhaps some coding.

I am personally using the Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 7 that I got at Microcenter with the 4790k. Combo costs like ~$410. I believe Gigabyte has the lowest RMA rate of any of the mobo manufacturers.
