  1. Hi All, So I just finished building a new PC and It's really quiet. I've used all Nocuta fans and it's REALLY quiet... except when the PSU fan turns on. It'll turn on for about a minute and while on there's a loud whiring sound. I thought it could be the fan, but when the noise stops the fan is still moving and slowing down to a stop and it doesn't make a sound so it's not the bearings etc. So is that coil whine in the PSU or something else? I thought coil whine is constant but I could be wrong. I have coil whine on an amplifier and this sounds different to that. Is there something I can do about it to reduce it? It's really annoying. The PSU is a new Corsair RM1000e Regards
  2. True. Probably at most for the 4080S you're probably looking at a 10-15 frame boost over the 4080 give or take. I don't see it coming in at the same price as the 4080 with much of a price drop if any for the 4080. Also with DLSS and frame gen, it should be fine for a good few years. Cheers all.
  3. Hi All, So I'm currently building a new PC. I have everything I need except for the GPU and I had decided it would either be a 4070ti or 4080. However, then the news broke about a possible new Super variant started to do the rounds. Since I have everything I need to build the new PC, I don't really want to wait until they're released next Spring, so I'm now thinking about getting a 4060 as a stop gap until I get the new card when they are released. My thinking is, they're relatively cheap and it'll allow me to complete the build and use the PC. I can then later upgrade and use the 4060 in my current PC which I build around 10 years ago and replace the two GTX 970 cards I have running in that. Thoughts? Am I mad or does it make sense? Regards M.
  4. Perfect. So I guess anything is possible. So this project is a go!
  5. I was hoping to use it as a box for VMs. So I'm not too concerned about the video card, but more the CPU and memory. I've been thinging about the following... Intel i5-6500 MSI B150 Socket 1151 ATX Mbd 64GB Ram. Or is that overkill? I currently have a i7-4790K running with 32GB ram (maxed out) and can manage 6 VMs but I need more Ram so looking to build a new system for it. Regards M
  6. Hi all, I have a question about an ATX case. I recently came across an old ATX case I had in storage. It's an old Gateway 2000 mini tower case which is an ATX form factor. From around the year 1995-96. I used to work in Gateway and seeing the case has brought back some good memories working there and so I'm thinking of starting a new build around this case. However, my question is although it's an ATX case and an ATX motherboard should fit, would I run into any problems given that the case is over 20 years old. No cable management space and not a lot of ventilation so won't be running any power hungry/heat generating components. Anyone ever try this building in a case this age? What would be the best spec I could expect to run in a case like this today? Don't say a Pentium 133 Here's a photo of the case as it stands. Haven't cleaned it or treated it with Retrobright to remove the yellowing yet so it's not looking it's best. You can see the difference in the colour on some of the parts. Regards. M.
  7. After weeks of getting no where with this issue. I just tested it again. Now it works! Nothing has changed on my side. Last update appears to be 11th Jan. Last time I tried to run the VM was 3 days ago and nothing. Now it's fine!! I hate when that happens. I'd rather know what caused the issue.
  8. Nothing shown in the bios for virtualisation, however when I check in Task Manager I can see Virtualisation is set to Enabled.
  9. Hi, It's an i7 4790K 32GB Ram. Virtualization was enabled as it worked. I haven't been in the bios since then but I'll go in now and check if it's still enabled.
  10. Hi all, I'm having problems trying to start VMs in Hyper-V on Windows 10 Pro. This all worked fine up to a while ago. I hadn't used Hyper-V for maybe a year give or take but up to then it had all worked. Now it won't start any VM. I've tried creating a new VM for Windows server 2012 but I can't even get to the point to install the OS. Hyper-V starts fine, I can create a VM, assign memory, VHD etc point it to the ISO or CD drive etc and then open the VM. However it's when I then click on the Start button that it bombs out with an error: The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'VM Name'. 'VM name' failed to start. More details gives me failed to start worker process: The process terminated unexpectedly. Anyone come across this? I'm running the latest build of Windows 10 which I updated last week when troubleshooting this. Sofar I've found nothing online that could be the cause. It's doing my head in. Help! Regards M.
  11. Have a solution. Intel NUC.
  12. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've had a look as the MSI boards and the more I look at them, the more I like the NUC. A big factor for me is getting power to the system. I can't fit a big PSU in there so the NUC is a nice solution for that. It's also perfect in terms of size. just a little over 11cm x 11cm and 3cm in height and that's including the case. It's a bit pricey in my part of the world, but I think it's a perfect solution. It might even fit into the more modern 64C version of the case. Thanks again.
  13. Wow, hadn't thought of that. Perfect solution! That was easy
  14. Hi all, I'm starting a case mod of an old Commodore 64 (Bread bin style case) and I'm trying to decide on what motherboard to use with this. I'm hoping that maybe someone here has done something similar and can offer advice on the best choice of motherboard with an APU that will work ok for basic gaming. In terms of the case, it's small in there. Not much in the way of heigth for a large heatsink and not much, if nothing at all in terms of airflow. So this baby has to run cool so it isn't going to be a beast of a machine, but I would like it to be able to do some minor 3D gaming if possible. So as I see it I need the following... a Mini or Nano ITX motherboard and if possible a motherboard that comes with an APU and small heatsink/fan already fitted. It has to be as low as possible to get in there under the keyboard! The PSU needs to be external, so the Motherboard needs to be able to use a Laptop style PSU. I'm planning to use Windows 8.1 on the system so I'd like to have a recent enough board so I know there shouldn't be any problems with the support of the OS. I don't have much experience with these types of motherboards so I'm hoping that someone here might have suggestions on the best board to use. Something like this is what I have in mind except I can't use this as it has an internal PSU connector... http://www.ebay.ie/i...=item4879c25e3f Any advice would be appreciated. Regards.

Also planning on modding the Commodore datasette (tape drive) into an external hard drive case with maybe a card reader and/or a USB hub. Might be interesting. What do people think? Regards Mike.
