  1. I'm currently freaking out a little... I need my PC for work and the motherboard getting fried is not something you plan for. I built this PC in November last year (specs on my profile) and it was working fine all up until October when I smelt burning plastic in my office while recording a gaming video. I had no idea what it was and just turned off the electrics and the smell went away. Around the same time I began having a problem to where the PC would boot up fine, but with no USB power or video output. I posted about this problem without solution here. Obviously today I now know that this is the cause of the problem. Does the P9X79-e WS have warrantee over a year? I'm at my parents house for Christmas and I can't check my box at home (yes I did bring the entire PC with me, this thing is my life), and I can't find much for it online. I don't really know what to do, it's Christmas day so I know there's not much I can do. What a frustration. Do you have any idea what could have caused the burn, what burnt and what you recommend I should do?
  2. Ah damn, there's one at my parents house but that's a drive away. I plugged my iPhone into it and it's not powering it, if it was supplying 5V then it would charge the phone, same with the SD card reader and my usb hub. But then that doesn't explain why there's no signal going through the DVI or HDMI to the monitor.
  3. How would I do that? It's currently running through DVI into the graphics card.
  4. I built this PC around November last year, it has served me well all up until a few months ago, where the bloody thing decides it doesn't want to turn on anymore. Well, it turns on, but with no USB power and no signal to the monitor. Here's a video, might help you understand the problem. I'm desperate to fix this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwfOM3z41eA Specs below: CPU Intel Core i7-4930K 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor Motherboard Asus P9X79-E WS SSI CEB LGA2011 Motherboard RAM Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory GPU Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card Case Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case Storage Intel 730 Series 240GB, Seagate Barracuda 3TB PSU Corsair 860W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Display(s) BenQ XL2420Z 144Hz 24.0" Monitor Cooling Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler Keyboard Corsair Vengeance K95 Wired Gaming Keyboard
  5. I can never quite decide if I want the tower on the desk or on the floor. Floor means more space, but increased dust intake and I don't get to see through the window of the PC, which I'm sure you'll agree is a massive disadvantage. Desk means less dust and beautiful views, but more noise. While re-arranging my office I decided to put the PC back up top, as I stood on my desk my head hit the panel above which leads into the 2ft loft space in my 2nd floor apartment. The panel came flying down, a long with a massive gust of cold air, shocking at first, but then my creativity hit me; I could do something with this. The wall next to the PC is an outside wall, there just so happens to be a small opening nearby, meaning it's fresh outside air in there. I currently have several ideas on how to utilise this, because either way I'm doing something with it. The problem in my office is heat; the PC is ALWAYS on, it's usually converting mountains of footage on the daily, as I do YouTube full time, we're talking 14 videos a week. With a similar video editing workflow as Linus, but on a much smaller scale, I usually edit on my macbook using footage archived on the PC, with media encoder watch folders to manage and convert footage as I work, it really is a nifty setup. I digress. First Idea Build a wooden or plastic unit (to replace the cover on the hatch) fitted with multiple pc fans, either four on a square panel, OR a box with several around the outside, divided into two parts, intake and exhaust. Have piping coming down from the ceiling and into my PC. My initial thoughts are that I'd need to modify my PC case or buy a new one specially designed & optimised for one intake and one exhaust (any suggestions?), then attaching piping on either end. Condensation and outside particles wouldn't be a problem as the "loft" space is enclosed, just very cold. I'd also need to power the fans in the box, unless I just made a box with pipes and left the fans inside the PC case itself. Second Idea Do the same thing, but instead of having the piping lead into my PC, just buy an air condition unit and have them go into that, but loose out on the DIY fun. I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. I'm not restricted by much of a budget and am really just looking to have some fun with it and solve the heat problem in my office.
  6. I would, but the 5930K but I've already got the motherboard, plus the DDR4 RAM is considerably more expensive.. for now I just don't think it's worth the hassle of sending parts back etc.
  7. But can't you have quad channel with two 16GB (2 x 8GB) kits? It's just a matter of cost at this point.
  8. Will the Intel Core i7 4930k support the Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory? On Intel's website they say it supports DDR3-1333/1600/1866... so my guessing is that it won't. I ask because I'm about to buy both the processor and the ram for my build, and I chose this RAM a while back and I'm just double checking compatibility etc... Here's my build on PcPartPicker: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/jamiepine/saved/qLKscf If it doesn't support it, what RAM would you recommend? I will be upgrading to 64GB down the line, probably though 16GB (2 x 8GB) kits. Build purpose: Video Editing / Workstation / Gaming Thanks guys!
  9. I'd say go with the 970... not because I just did... well, partly that. Yeah that.
  10. I just bought the Gigabyte Windforce, counting the minutes until this thing arrives. Beautiful design, goes perfectly with my case, it runs cool and is likely to be the best performing.
  11. Okay I'll get those! Thank you, really appreciate it
  12. Thanks, should I use rubbing alcohol? I've not done this before, haha.
  13. So stupidly I forgot the CPU cooler on the Corsair H100i comes with some form of thermal paste already on it, when I was handling it I got my finger prints on it and a few other things touched it, messing up the paste. Should I use rubbing alcohol, take it off and apply new thermal paste? If so what type should I use? Or does it not matter? Thanks.
  14. Just to add to the hundreds of posts about this, I want more opinions. Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 - £299.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-147-GI&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1010 OR Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU II OC - £299.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-352-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1010 They're EXACTLY the same price... I like the Gigabyte because of the Windforce blue LED logo, goes with the blue in my case.. ..and I like the Asus because apparently Direct CU II is better? ...and no I don't want an MSI card, I hate the design. I have a massive window with the 750d case, plus the card is red, my PC will be blue. THOUGHTS?! Thanks P.S: I'm building a video editing rig, working in 4k with Adobe. AND I will be gaming a lot. It's a difficult multi purpose rig. I'd get the 980, but I'm not feeling the price to performance, unless it would make a difference?
