  1. Hello, I just tried multiple configurations of what you suggested. For context, slots number 1 and 3 (closest and third closest to the CPU) are my unoptimal slots, and I tested the slots one at a time with both sticks. All 4 possible configurations resulted in BIOS corruption. Attached is an image of what it looks like. Also, while I was doing this I encountered a BSOD with stop code 0xc000021a, not sure if it'll provide a clue as to what's wrong.
  2. Specs: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 2x EVGA 8GX-DR-3000-MR MSI B350 Tomahawk MSI RX 580 Gaming X 4GB SeaSonic Focus Plus Gold 750W Corsair H80i AIO Samsung 960 EVO 250GB WD Black 1TB WD Green 2TB My PC is about 3 years old but my oldest components, the hard drives and the AIO cooler, go back as far as 6. Since the end of last year I've been having the occasional unexplained crash during games where I would lose my display output but still have audio. This easily sounds like a GPU related issue, but the weird thing about the audio that remains is it's only "background" noise. As in, if I were to crash in the middle of a firefight, at the moment of the crash I would stop hearing sounds associated with the firefight like gunshots. However, background noise like the wind or birds chirping would still play. If it was a purely GPU failure I think I would still hear the fight going on, I just wouldn't be able to see it, which leads me to believe it's something else. In the process of troubleshooting, I discovered that my second memory channel is near unusable. Moving my RAM sticks to the second channel would visually corrupt the BIOS where text overlaps and eventually it would freeze. If I were to go straight into Windows, I would be able to use it for up to a few minutes until I received a memory related BSOD. I can't remember the exact error codes but it wouldn't be the same one every time, and I believe one of them mentioned the kernel. I believe it may be related to the issue above which is why I'm leaning more towards the CPU being at fault here. I've already ruled out the motherboard because I RMA'd it for this exact issue. MSI sent it back but didn't say what they did to it, but I described the issue as-is so I assume they tested it and didn't find the problem to be board related. I also ruled out the PSU because I replaced it thinking that the issue could be related to its age, but no luck. I find it difficult to believe that it would be the RAM sticks because the issue arises specifically when they're in the unoptimal memory channel, but if it was the sticks then there should be failure no matter the channel, but I could be wrong. I'm leaning more towards it being the CPU, but a friend said it could still be GPU related, I'm not sure. The black screen crash is not nearly as easy to recreate because it happens just infrequent enough that I can't easily swap components and see if it fixes the issue within a reasonable length of time, but just frequent enough to be a nuisance. Here's what I've done so far to try to fix the issue: Reinstall Windows Pull back the CPU overclock Reinstall GPU drivers Flash VBIOS Flash actual BIOS Reassemble the system (due to motherboard RMA) I think at this point I'm running out of options to fix it on the software side, and it may be an actual hardware issue. Any insight on what it could be would be appreciated, as I have never had an issue this difficult to track down before.
  3. Yeah I have a 60Hz 1080p monitor. I'll try disabling smoothing after I get home. I did notice on a few occasions the FPS counter with a blue CPU bracket.
  4. I have a FX 8350, 8 gigs of ram, and an R9 290. Playing PS2 gives me an average FPS of 30 in battles and I've even hit 15. I am using ultra preset with no vsync or fog shadows. Lowering shadow to low helped but not by much. Tried 32 bit client and had same results. Anyone know whats wrong? Thanks
  5. Hi. I recently got an FX 8350 Black Edition with an H80i liquid cooler from Corsair. Of course, with any unlocked CPU, I overclock it. I've raised voltage a slight bit and the clock to 4.4GHz and did some prime95 tests. They're actually pretty high, and although they are still a few degrees below the safe line, I'm not about to take any chances with my brand new rig, and plus I've got some money lying around that's left over from my build. I've heard that static pressure fans are really effective for use in radiators, and the radiator fan I'm using right now is either a quiet fan or the fan that came with the H80i cooler, so I could make use of a new fan. I've heard some really good things about Noctua brand fans, but that's only for noise level. I'm not completely sure if the actual cooling performance is good. All I need is a good 120mm static pressure fan Any suggestions would be appreciated
  6. Well, looks like I AM gonna have to get another 290. I'd prefer running on max 1440p. Something about dual GPUs in a rig just gives it a whole new level of awesome, so I don't mind
  7. Hello people. I recently built a rig consisting of an R9 290 and an FX 8350 CPU. I've been extremely satisfied with the performance on my 1080p monitor. However, I might upgrade to 1440p in the future and I'm wondering if my GPU is enough to handle it. I don't mind buying a second GPU, but I don't want to waste money on something I don't need.
  8. Another option for you might be to switch to a GTX 750 ti, if it really IS the PSU's problem. At default clock speed it will be around 10-15% less powerful than an R7 265 BUT since it uses less wattage you can pull of higher overclocks with it. In fact it uses so little electricity it doesn't even require its own dedicated PSU cable. If you got it from microcenter you can ask for an exchange at the store. But hey, that's just my suggestion
  9. Hello, people. I recently got my hands on an FX-8350 Black Edition. I am really excited as my previous rig only used an OEM Intel Pentium. I overclocked the FX 8350 with a slightly-higher-than-stock voltage to a clock speed of 4.4GHz. However, in prime95 tests the temps reached to 61 degrees. I've heard that AMD CPUs are generally cooler but have a lower temperature threshold. I'm worried that I might be shortening the lifespan of my brand new rig. I'm using an H80i liquid cooler from Corsair. If anyone has information regarding the maximum safe temperatures of this CPU or tips to cool it down more, I'd appreciate it.
  10. Exactly what I did Yeah, AMD GPUs compared to Nvidia GPUs are a slight bit less powerful but WAY more price efficient. My 290 can run most games at 60FPS max settings constantly on 1080p. If you have enough money for a 770, you should probably save a bit more to get the 290.
  11. The R9 290x, compared to the non X version, is only a tiny bit more powerful, and IMO is not worth the price. I got an MSI R9 290 for 1080p 60Hz gaming and it was able to reach the top FPS perfectly fine. In most games I could run on ultra and have 60FPS consistently. The R9 290x isn't really worth the extra money. One of my friends got it and the performance difference wasn't that different compared to the R9 290.
  12. Console gaming is "good", but PC gaming is even better. I find console games ti be sort of like buying a low budget gaming PC with less functions. I've also heard (and experienced) of the community being pretty toxic. Computers can have much more potential with more bindable keys, more functions like video editing/recording, more variety, and lots of other options. I don't have a problem with console gamers. Rather, I have problems with console gamers that say consoles are better. If you're just seeking to buy something, bring it home, and start to play within the same hour, a console is perfectly fine. But in my opinion, something like building a PC would prove to be a much more entertaining and worthwhile investment.
  13. Its not the best, but it's a medium budget build gpu. However, it IS a generation behind so for the same amount of money I'd spend it on a newer gpu like a 760 or spend a bit more and get a 770 for more efficient architecture.
  14. I feel you. I have a friend who thinks an i5 is not powerful enough for a 750 ti and is making a whole new build to house an i7..... . But your case is an even worse one than mine. I doubt gta 5 is that graphically intense and for 1080p? LOL. It IS a big waste of money. I back you up on this one.
  15. Recently, I built a rig with an M5A99X motherboard, MSI R9 290, 8 gigabytes of ram from Corsair, and an FX-8350. I've done a little bit of research on the CPU, and a lot of people say that it's better for multitasking and multi thread programs than the i5 equivalents, but the i5 is better at single thread programs such as most games. I'm wondering, is the FX-8350 still powerful enough to run games such as Planetside 2 or War Thunder? Because I've noticed that I sometimes get 35FPS framerate drops in Planetside 2, and it's not likely that the R9 290 is causing this (1080p resolution). Any help would be appreciated. PS. Sorry if this is a noob question, I'm still a computer noob. Just 2 months ago I was still using Pentium G620 + Integrated Graphics
