1. I currently have a 128 GB Samsung 830 SSD as my boot drive and a Seagate 2 TB hd to keep files and multimedia. The ssd was chosen because of the reviews and because it was on sale in a big promotion of an online retailer here in Italy. The seagate drive was choosen because... well, because I've always made computers with seagate drives, without any particular reason. I also use a 500 GB WD Green for backups. Thank you. You're right, an SSD would be a great option. A 128 GB Crucial M4 is only 40 € more expensive, and I could easily add more storage for data later. Suggestion accepted! ;)

My 2 TB Barracuda (ST2000DM001) is very quiet, I must put my ear very close to the case to hear it even during work.

Desktop: Fedora (has always worked flawlessy even with the strangest hardware i.e. netbooks and laptops) Personal server: mainly Debian Servers at work: Ubuntu

My d-link powerline connects almost instantaneously. Do you use static network addresses or DHCP? I had some trouble in the past with very slow DHCP on apple products...

Firefox. There's something indefinite about the Chrome UI that I can't stand.
