  1. So I'm in the process of building a FreeNAS box, and have a pretty noobish question regarding networking. I can position the server next to our current router, but I would rather have it in my room, because the room with the router is used as a guest room and some of my family that stays over are very picky about any noise, so I'd end up having to turn off the NAS while they were staying. Which brings me to a possible solution I have found, but just wanted to run it by you guy and gals to see if it's actually going to work before I buy things. I know that using a Wi-Fi card in a FreeNAS box is a big no no, at least that is the response I got from their forums, but they didn't seem very helpful beyond that. What I was thinking is using a Wi-Fi range extender that has Ethernet port/s on it, such as the Netgear WN2500RP, the plugging the NAS into that. Would that work, or am I just being a noob? Regards, Kieran
  2. Hi all, I'm looking for some NAS software that runs in either Windows 7 or a Linux distribution so that I can still run other programs on that computer. I'm trying to use my current computer (as I'm building a new one) as a render farm/NAS/external display for X-Plane. Blender and X-Plane run in both Windows and Linux so I'm able to use both. So far the only NAS software I can find run as entire operating systems, so I wouldn't be able to install and run other programs from what I can see. Regards, Kieran
  3. Haha yeah thanks, I saw that.
  4. Thanks that's just what I needed, at least it's free shipping to Aus
  5. Motherboard and RAM arrived today, with the PSU and one of the SSDs set to arrive in the next couple of days. I've decided to go with 2 512GB SSDs in RAID 0, and will work with just the one for now. It's looking like the CPU will be a post Christmas purchase unfortunately, but I'm doing my best to get it asap so I can have the system up and running. Even though it won't be in its final state for some time. Also trying to figure out a better way to deal with the USB 3.0 header here.
  6. Hi all, I'm building in the NZXT H440 with an ASUS X99 Deluxe motherboard, and I'm running into some issues with the USB 3.0 Header. I can get it plugged in, but the cable is bent very sharply and puts pressure on the header, which I'd rather avoid. So I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas of how I could avoid this. I was thinking of getting a header extension and modding it to have a smaller plug, and perhaps more flexible cable, is that possible? Failing that I could cut into the case so the cable only has to bend 90 degrees instead of 180, but that's something I'd rather avoid. Regards, Kieran
  7. Thanks everyone, that build is certainly inspiration. The Hyper 212 isn't a permanent cooling solution, it is just temporary until I water cool it. I won't be overclocking it until then, because as you've pointed out the 212 probably won't be able to handle it.
  8. Hi all, Just wanted to start this thread to document my new build I'm working on, and to get some feedback as well. As you may have guessed from the name, White Knight is going to be centered around a white theme, and will be built in the white NZXT H440. I'll be using it for a variety of purposes; I fly a lot in X-Plane (flight simulator) with a triple monitor set up, but I also do a lot of 3D graphics work, mainly in Blender, along with some video and photo editing. I haven't played many games, but I'm looking to start getting into some games soon. Once I have the parts outlined above, I'm going to water cool it. I already have an XSPC RX360 for the front, and I plan on putting a EX360 in the top (I'll confirm clearances when I get the motherboard, which should be tomorrow). The aim is to buy the CPU and cooler next, and then use parts from my current machine to have the computer up and running and then buy the rest of the parts as I can. After that I'll get the PSU so that I can have both machines running, though my old one will be off Intel Graphics, but as it won't be my primary system it won't be too much of a problem. In regards to storage, I'm thinking of going with 2 512GB SSDs in RAID 0 instead of the single 1TB. This would double the chances of disk failure, but it would also double the performance and look better. As the H440 has two SSD sleds on the power supply shroud. Then for mass storage of video mostly, I'll use a NAS. One question I do have, is whether I'll be able to use my old (well not exactly that old, 4770K and GTX 780Ti) as both a NAS and a render farm and external display. Both Blender and X-Plane run on all 3 operating systems so I just need to find NAS software that runs on Windows or Linux. If you have any suggestions it would be much appreciated. Any feedback on the system is always appreciated, especially in regards to fans, I haven't decided yet what I'm going to use.
  9. @ThatCoolBlueKidd Thanks for you input on the gpu, and I agree it's probably best to get a completely reference 980 as I'll be water cooling it soon enough. @Fragsa1 In regards to the airflow of the H440, I'm well aware of the difficulties with it, but I've fallen in love with the looks and design and it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. To the point that for my birthday (early December) a few friends are getting together to get me a white one. @Leonard My friends are also getting me a XSPC RX360 rad, which has a 13 fpi, compared with the Nemesis' 16fpi, so those fans you recommended should still be fine for that radiator I assume? In terms of pricing, to get the Akasa Apaches from FrozenCPU and get them delivered here is going to be more expensive, but not by much. They work out to be similar in price but in USD rather than AUD. Purely from the spec sheets the SP120 perform slightly better but are noisier. The static pressure of the SP120s is 3.1 mmH20 compared with 2.64 mmH20. My question is how much of a difference is this likely to make with the H440 and XSPC rad?
  10. Hey all, I'm building a new system over the Christmas holidays and was looking for some advice regarding water cooling. I'm going with the NZXT H440, which I know doesn't have the cleanest airflow to radiators. Therefore I'm looking for fans with a high static pressure. What would you recommend as fans for this system? I'm looking for fans that are very quiet, have a high static pressure, and look clean. In regards to LED fans, I'd want either non-LED or white LED fans. Any suggestions regarding fans would be much appreciated. So far I've looked at the Corsair SP120 Quiet Editions, but I'm not too sure about their static pressure, and also the CoolerMaster SickleFlow X but from reviews I've read they don't quite meet their published specs. My second question is regarding GPUs and in particular determining if a card has a reference PCB. I'm wanting to have full cover water blocks and so would need a reference PCB design, but I haven't found any information on the GTX 980s as to which are reference designs. I was looking at the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0 as I'd be able to run it on air while I save up the rest of the money for the loop, but I'm not sure if it is a reference PCB. Any help with either of these would be very much appreciated. Also I'm in Australia so I'm not sure everything available in the rest of the world is as easy to come by, especially water cooling parts. Thank you all
  11. The rubbing alcohol will evaporate pretty quickly, so you shouldn't need to dry it with a cloth.
