If I were newbie, I would go with Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity. Why? 1. Extremely stable, 2. Just works out-of-the-box; don't have to worry about kernel not recognising devices and that kind of staff, it just works, 3. Extremely user-friendly, 4. Comes fully-featured; just install Ubuntu and everything is there (Browser, Mail, LibreOffice, even video recorder), 5. Intuitive UI, 6. Rich Software-Center, and more. Just give it a try Its worth it

Id uninstall, remove all 'leftovers' like config data and than install again.....

so if not Chrome, maybe Chromium? or try Maxthon? Pretty simple yet powerful browser......
