  1. Just a quick question:

Why are my Crystal Disk Mark scores so high?

    I have a Samsung 850 Evo

I'm having amazing scores, especially on read performance (not upset with that, just curious):

    cdm test.PNG

other 850 Evo scores onilne are more like this:

    index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=130

    I have 3 hypothesis:

    1) I did the test wrong

    2) Samsung Magician (RAPID mode enabled) is doing something to boost the performance

    3) Intel Rapid Storage is doing something to boost the performance

I remember setting up some kind of cache thing in the past (either in windows itself or the two previously mentioned programs) but I can't remember what program it was in and I can't find anything about it in the Samsung or Intel programs.

Is the cache thing affecting my scores? Is this showing real world performance, or is it just loading in the cache?

  2. I just thought that I would try to clear up some of the fallacies that I have found in this thread by giving some statistics and state my own opinion on the US gun laws even though this thread is getting a bit old.

    Stats:

In Europe, the countries with the least gun ownership tend to have higher murder rates while countries with the most gun ownership tend to have the lowest murder rates.

    post-109641-0-87733100-1433696195_thumb.

Also, countries in Europe in which handgun ownership by civilians is banned have higher murder rates than their neighboring countries that allow handgun ownership by civilians.

    post-109641-0-10041200-1433696357_thumb.

These statistics came from this Harvard study done by Don B. Kates (LL. B) and Gary Mauser (Ph.D). I strongly encourage anyone that is interested in the effects of gun control and gun ownership to read the entire study.

    My Opinion:

In my opinion, the US gun laws are alright how they are, and I don't think that gun ownership in the US should be limited any further that it has been already. I understand how people that haven't grown up around firearms or learned about gun safety from an early age can't understand why people need guns, but as a person that has grown up around guns, I think that the right to own a firearm shouldn't be infringed upon by the federal government any further than it already has.

Think about it like this: Compare gun control laws to the Patriot Act (which is something that I think we can agree upon is bad). Both take away the liberty of the citizens with gun control laws taking away the right to own a firearm and the Patriot act taking away the right to privacy. As Snowden said, we shouldn't give up our liberties just because we don't need them now, but we must keep them in case we need them later. I think that these two things (Patriot Act and gun control laws) are very similar and both infringe upon the liberty of the American people more than we should allow.

Even though most of us consider the Patriot Act as not increasing the safety of the American people, some people think it would increase safety. While I think that gun control laws decrease the safety of the American people, some people think those laws would increase safety. Even for the people that think these two things would increase the safety of the American people, think about what Benjamin Franklin said:

"Those that would give up a little liberty to purchase a little security deserve neither and will lose both."

  3. I ordered these components with the monitor that I wanted, but NCIXUS ran out of stock, so I didn't get it (it was a really good deal and I don't think that it's worth it at it's regular price, so I am looking at different ones).

    My Specs

    Intel i5 4690K

    Asus GTX 970 Strix

    Asus Z97-A

Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133 C9 RAM

    Samsung 850 Evo SSD (250GB)

    Corsair RM750 PSU

    NZXT H440 designed by Razer

    Windows 8.1 Pro

I have been looking at the Refurbished LG 25UM65-P and the Asus VG248QE.

    LG 25UM65-P

    Refurbished (LG recertified Grade A)

    2560 x 1080

    21:9 Aspect Ratio

    60Hz

    IPS display

    25" diagonal

    111.14 PPI Pixel Density

    Becomes retina at 31"

$180 USD after promo code (really good deal)

    Asus VG248QE

    1920 x 1080

    16:9 Aspect Ratio

    144Hz

TN Panel (I'm not worried about colors though because of this)

    24" diagonal

    91.79 PPI Pixel Density

    Becomes retina at 37"

    $275 USD Regular Price

My question is: With my specs is the 144Hz monitor worth the extra $95? I am going to use this monitor for web browsing, schoolwork, gaming (KSP, Skyrim, Insurgency, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, and a little Minecraft), and occasional Photoshop and FL Studio.

  4. Thanks in Advance!

I have wanted to build a system for a long time now and I have have found some good deals, so I think it is time! I've watched a lot of Linus's videos and I think I've chosen fairly good components for the money, but I wanted some expert advice.  :)

These are the components I've chosen:

    Processor -  Intel i5 4690k $213.00

    NCIXUS

    Motherboard -  Asus Z97-A $140.00

    NCIXUS

Graphics Card -  Asus GTX 970 Strix $349.00

    NCIXUS

    Case -  Razer designed H440 $150.00

    Newegg

    Power Supply -  Corsair RM750 750 Watt $100.00

    Newegg

    RAM -  Corsair Dominator 2133 C9 $130.00

    Newegg

    CPU Cooler -  NZXT Kraken X61 $140.00

    Newegg

    Storage -  Samsung 850 Evo 250GB $140.00

    Newegg

    OS -  Windows 8.1 $105.00

    NCIXUS

    Monitor -  LG 25UM55-P 25" 2560x1080 $190.00

    NCIXUS

    Total:  $1657.00

    Budget and Location

About $1700. I'm in the US

    Aim

Web browsing, schoolwork, gaming (KSP, Skyrim, Insurgency, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, and a little Minecraft), and occasional Photoshop and FL Studio

    Monitors

Originally I wanted an Asus PB278Q, but it's too expensive and wouldn't fit on my desk very well, so now I want an LG 25" Ultrawide. It would be difficult to add any monitors to this setup, but if I did it would just be a small cheap monitor above this one.

    Peripherals

I have my peripherals (CM Storm Trigger Z with brown switches and white backlight and Logitech G602 Wireless Mouse). I will need a Windows licence, so I included it above.

    Why?

I currently have a Lenovo Z585 (A10 Version) laptop and I can play games at very low settings, but I want to completely ascend to the PC Master Race and get a capable desktop system that looks good.

    Please Note

I know I can get a cheaper equivalent case, CPU cooler, and RAM, but the aesthetic of the finished rig is too important to me to do that even though it shouldn't be.

If I want to have more graphics power in the future, I will add another 970.

I think that the 250GB SSD will be enough for a while, but I plan to get another one in the future and put it in RAID 0.

  5. Thank you Linus Media Group for the awesome videos. I am a relatively new member of the community, but I love the idea and attitude in it in every way. Even though I am fairly new, after I had found your channels on youtube, I watched as many videos as I had time for. I have been tuning in to the WAN Show every week for a couple months now and have probably watched almost 200 hours of Linus Tech Tips, Techquickie, Channel Super Fun, NCIXcom, and even Linus Cat Tips. I love every video on all of these channels to a degree and it is hard to pick a favorite, but I like the Channel Super Fun and the Linus Media Group tours the most. And the WAN show archives. And the great Techquickie Info. Thank You!!!

  6. I would assume they are. Are you able to turn the wifi on now? If not, you may want to try uninstalling all of the drivers in there and trying to install the latest one again.

After a restart there are some new devices now and I am not sure what to do. Under "Other Devices" there are a few new ones too.

edit: Oh, and the Wi-Fi still doesn't work.

  7. Try going to Device Manager, right clicking on your Broadcom adapter, properties, driver tab, update driver, and browsing for the SP57965 folder that got created.

Aaaaaaahhhhhh that makes sense. It now shows two .dll things that aren't system files. Are they still drivers?

    edit: spelling

  8. Uhm, had a bit of trouble finding a driver for it. Try this one: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-107849-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en  Not sure if it will work or not since it's a Lenovo instead of HP, should be the right driver though, I think.

How do I install this driver? When I ran the install wizard it created a new folder directly in my hard drive and installed there.

    post-109641-0-77878500-1408113368.jpg

It wasn't there when I look in my driver details. These drivers were already there.

    post-109641-0-39622000-1408113541.jpg

Do I need to just move the two system files in the installed folder to my drivers folder, or is there something else I am missing? Also the one .exe in that folder appears to do nothing.

  9. Yeah, honestly I would just uninstall the program all together, it seems to be doing more harm than good (you may want to consider just uninstalling all the Lenovo programs, unless you have a specific use for them). Do you know the model of your wifi card? You may have better luck going to the manufacturers website and trying their drivers instead of the ones on Lenovo's website.

  10. Found this on Lenovo's website: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht075865

"Somehow Lenovo Energy Managment version 8.0.2.3 does not let the customer to enable the wireless connection. When we remove the Lenovo Energy Managment version 8.0.2.3 or downgrade it to version 6.0.2.4 the problem will be solved."

It sounds like you may have already tried that though?

Right now I just installed the windows 7 version of lenovo power management and am messing around in the settings to see if I can get it to work. I just realized though that if it didn't work with it uninstalled, then this probably won't help.

These are the network adapters I have with my laptop. I felt I could show you what some more looked like, so you could learn a bit, since I read you are just getting into computers :P

Your FE is a very generic Ethernet driver. Mine, is the Killer e2200 Gigabit NIC. So I get a much better, and descriptive name for my driver. Mine, is also not FE, it's techinicallt Gi (Gigabit). Followin my e2200 is a driver for Hyper-V's NIC's, since I have Hyper-V installed, Below that is the driver for my 802.11n WiFi card, in this case, a Realtek RTL8723AE NIC. Lastly, the other 2 adapters, are actually virtual adapters for VMWare VM's that I grant NICs.

Also, in case you were wondering, or didn't know, NIC= Network Interface card

Thank you soooo much for this information! I know so many people that would find this boring, but it just makes me grin because I love learning about things I'm interested in and it's useful too!  :D

  12. Has this been an ongoing thing, or just a random issue? Good ol' restart could fix it, assuming you've yet to try that.

Just happened when I fixed my charging issue. I have restarted the computer several times after i had been using the computer offline (gaming) or using the wireless adapter to connect to the internet. Also I forgot to mention that when I tried using an Ethernet cable it worked.
