Is the GTX 980 Really Worth the $500 to $600?

Let's think about it: The GTX 970 and 980 Perform almost THE EXACT SAME! And the fact that you will be able to run most games at 4K with high details with 2 970s, which is only $100 more than a 980! And a single 980 will play SOME games at 4k on low-medium settings. Or, look around on amazon or ebay and you'll find an older card for less than a single 970! Or 2! I'm not saying that these cards are bad, and hell, I dont even have a GTX 760! But are 970s and 980s worth it? Tell me what you think.

The 970 is definitely worth it. The 980 is for the more elite crowd, who want the best of the best, despite the capabilities of the 970. I personally am considering an 970 build, and with the extra money from not buying the 980, I will get an i7, more RAM, and storage. This is because I do more editing than gaming, so I would suggest otherwise if you are not editing.

Linus recently made a Video about that topic (well kind of). He compared 3x970 vs 2x980 but it's basically the same and some things also apply to your question so you might want to check it out (

).
The most important things mentioned are that there is one exception for the "rule" of always get the one better performing graphics card, if there is one aviable, instead of two graphics cards. This exception would be the the 2nd tier graphics cards like the 970 that almost have similar specs as the top of the line graphics card, dont cost nearly as much and overclock very well.
So you might get, depending on how well SLI works for the games you are playing, better performance with 2x970 than with 1x980 or worse (a video on SLI performance Scaling here
).
I would suggest a research on that with the games that you are playing or would like to in the future and decide that way. You could also just go for 1x970 and then get another one by the time you want or need it.

I personally can't contribute some personal experience since my current PC is my first personal build with 1x780 Ti and my first PC had one GTX 280 so I never had a SLI configuration.

LOL! You had a GTX 280 before a 780 Ti? xD

I think an GTX 970 is fine for almost all of us paird with a good processor like i7 & an SSD i think these will do. I love games and i play games all the times. I don't see much difference. If your playing a game and and you are getting a descent playable fps well your good. The rest is all about showoffs. But now a days gpu like asus strix is greatly affordable and overall heat and noise generation is low. I personally think now is the time to upgrade to  GTX series. Go for GTX-970 !

Waiting for your comments.

Thanks
