Hey Everone, I am currently working on a 2001 Kawasaki 1100 stx di JET SKI and I need to run some Diagnostic software that can communicate with the engine management module. Unfortunately, this software runs over a serial connection and does not run on Windows XP or newer. So my idea is to run Windows 98 or 95 in a Virtual Machine on a normal Windows 10 laptop and use a USB to serial adapter and pass it through to the virtual machine. Most of my questions are revolving around whether or not this is actually going to work as all of this that I have planned is totally theoretical and I cannot find any account of anyone actually doing this with a VM before. Here are my questions When purchasing a Serial to USB adapter; Should I go with Prolific Chipset or FTDI Chipset? I have heard mixed things about which chipset works better/ has better compatibility. on top of that, most of the things I have seen floating around on the internet are really old and likely out-of-date information by now. Anyone with any experience with these adapters would be helpful. would it be better just to source a really old laptop with a serial port on it? This seems like it might be a really solid option but then I realized that finding a laptop that old, that works, and that is for sale might be challenging. My main concern with all of this is that I might get everything done right on the software side and the Engine Management Module might just be dead, if that's the case I am not sure how I would know for sure that everything is configured right, I don't exactly have a known working serial device at my disposal. Any and all input is welcome. Edits: Formatting

I created an account to ask one question: is there a market for old Texas Instruments laptops? I didn't know these were even a thing. A friend asked if I could demolish a couple hard drives. I said sure, thinking they'd be from the last 2 decades. Turns out they're in two really old laptops, one of which is a TI Extensa660CDT. He didn't have the power cords anymore, so I have no idea if it even turns on. I'll say this: they don't make keyboards like they used to. You could write a thesis on this keyboard.

Here's an alternative way to install windows 95 for those still having issues installing windows 95 manually without the floppy setup disk what you need: .DOS on a floppy or on an image (.flp .img) .Windows 95 cd .VMWARE player (it's free) or virtualpc (I recommend VMWARE) .Magiciso (the free trial version will do) .a copy of MSCDEX.EXE and oakcdrom.sys (both can be found online) MSCDEX.EXE: http://www.techadvice.com/tech/M/MSCDEX.htm oakcdrom.sys: https://goo.gl/YTZ3nL Magiciso: http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm step 1 create a new virtual machine (make sure to add a floppy image drive if you are using vmware) step 2 put your dos floppy/image in or mount it and install dos step 3 download and install the free version of magiciso open magic iso go to new - floppy - 1.44 find a copy of mscdex.exe find a copy of oakcdrom.sys (generic cd rom driver that works with dos.. might have to try another if it doesn't work) RENAME the oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys drag both these files into magic iso on the floppy disk we just created save the file close magic iso find the file we just saved in your explorer change the extension from .ima to .flp (if you are using vmware) or .img (if you are using virtualpc) (if you can't see the extensions you're going to need to change your folder options to show extensions) google it. it's easy to do step 4 go back to your virtual machine mount the floppy image we just created a:\ copy mscdex.exe c:\ copy cdrom.sys c:\ (don't forget to rename oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys in step 3) step 5 find config.sys in your c drive type: edit config.sys now add a line that says this device=c:\cdrom.sys /d:mscd001 exit and save step 6 find autoexec.bat in your c drive type: edit autoexec.bat now add a line that says this c:\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 exit and save step 7 restart the computer or virtual machine step 8 we're still not done yet now move to your c drive and type mscdex.exe: /d:mscd001 /M:5 /V /L:d /S /K (this part /M:x refers to the amount of buffers your drive has.. it's either 4 or 5. usually 5) step 9 create a blank floppy image either in vmware or magic iso then mount that new one put your windows 95 cd in the cd drive type: d:\ setup.exe step 10 it should be booting windows 95 now now you might run into troubles when it tries to install the other drivers it might ask you for windows floppies even if you're using the cd version which I never understood but anyways, you can find all of these drivers on the windows 95b cd if you have it they're all in cab files so you'd need to extract them 1 by 1 and put them on floppy images to use them. (huge pain) but I actually just got it to load the drivers off the win95 cd by just trying it over and over again until it worked. it might have been because I either did or didn't restart after putting in the windows 95 cd can't remember, but I'd try both if you're having trouble all in all windows 95 is incredible wonky to install in a virtual machine. I highly recommend using VMWARE and not virtual pc for this one. If you didn't have a hard time installing this.. you got incredible lucky make sure you check to make sure windows95 is seeing your cd drive if not go to the add new hardware wizard in the control panel and see if that detects it (Note: I tried to install it without installing MS-DOS first the first time by using fdisk and format then creating the autoexec.bat and config.sys manually. Even though I did this right I ran into problems when windows started installing. Installing dos before hand made it run a lot smoother for some reason. Ask around and find a copy from a friend. A lot of people still have a copy lying around that they don't care about)

Hello. I'd like to fake a windows 95 interface for an animation project i have in mind and i want it to be as authentic as possible. I'd love to know if there's a way to easily and quickly emulate windows 95 (with an original screen resolution from back in the day) within the desktop (similar to dosbox or parallel desktop), so that i can record the desktop. I'm only interested in the os animations and i don't need to install additional programs; i simply need the boot screen and a working desktop to open a couple of empty folders. It would be lovely if i could do this on Max OS X, but if not possible i have a windows 10 PC as well. Bonus: i'd like to put a video i have rendered previously on the emulated desktop to be opened by windows 95's standard media player (can't remember if it had one). Any suggestions on the codec to use or how to move files to it? Thank you very much.

Hello there! I'm in need of anyone who is well versed in the Windows 10 Registry Editor for a small project I am working on (I will most likely make a separate thread about it later). Long story short, I am trying to redesign my Windows 10 layout to resemble that of the earlier editions of Windows with a Vaporwave twist. Basically a sleeper build that will look like Windows 2000, Win98, or Win95, but run Windows 10 under the hood. Right now I'm trying to change all system icons to their older counterparts, but I've hit a bit of a snag: (*1) I have managed to change the default folder icon, and it seems to take effect throughout the entire system. (*2) But this only works with the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" turned on. (*3)Therefore, all of my photos and videos result to their default icons and it's quite difficult to navigate through them without their thumbnails. (*4) Even with the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" turned off, I still see the effects of the registry edit throughout the system. (*5) Although, neither on or off, the effect isn't quite everywhere. When searching online, I find methods that state you can change the default "Open/Closed" folder icons by adding the values "3" and "4" to the registry (http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/change-open-folder-icon-explorer-and-registry-editor/). Unfortunately, Windows 10 only favors the "Open" folder icon (or value "4") and ignores the other. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, "Can I change the THUMBNAIL icons to allow for both Open/Closed folder icons allowing me to see its contents as well as keeping the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" turned off to allow me to see my image and video files?" This "little" hobby of mine is really turning into a full scale project, far beyond anything I've ever messed with. If anyone is interested in seeing what I have so far, I posted a video to my Instagram the other day (http://ioutatime.tumblr.com/post/154065399531/ive-begun-the-process-of-converting-my-computer). If anyone can help me with this problem and the many others I have when it comes to locating icons in Registry Editor, I'd be more than happy to give a list of credits to those who helped in the upcoming YouTube video showing off the first demo. Feel free to message me with any questions. Hope to find help and thanks again! -Mason

I am working on a project I was filming called 'Making Minecraft Run on Windows 95' and so far it hasn't been going that well. I need to get java 6 update 7 working, that version run natively on windows 98. When I first ran the installer it said windows installer 2.0 needed then I installed that and it gave me error 1723 dll missing, unfortunately it didn't specify what dll was neeeded and that left me at a halt. Does anyone know what dll's/dependencies are needed to make it work? It is highly likely possible since it was possible to make java 8 run on 98.

I wrote a poem for the windows 95 25th anniversary, here it is: Windows oh windows 95, 25 years, my oh my We've been through a lot, all the things you've taught 25 years, have just gone by You brought the internet into our homes, our hearts You've been here, while playing Duke 3D The taskbar came, and won't go by Windows Xp, the nostalgia's there, but you were the one, who got us there When duty calls, you're the centre of the office But now, you're outdated, and will never be back there How many floppy's, not 1, not 2, it was 13, no more, no less Although MS Bob failed, you didn't, you stuck beside us, until 1998 You won't be neglected, you won't be forgotten Yet 25 years have passed, but you'll still be there You were a change to the old, and sparked some new You may be old, but you're still loved by few You gave us MS solitaire, and passed many hours You taught the kids, that give us computers Windows oh windows 95, 25 years, my oh my

Im trying to play Jedi knight dark forces 2 on my original Windows 95 computer, and it freezes when I click on "new game". (It supposed to play a cinematic and then load the first level) I ran the minimum requirements check and the system passes without a problem.

You can now run WINDOWS 95 IN YOUR BROWSER! Go to https://win95.ajf.me/ to run it in your browser. (It takes a very long time to load and is very slow!) I thought that this was pretty cool that you can now run the full version of an Operating System in your browser! It might look like it's doing nothing for a while but just wait, eventually it will boot.

I have a trashy old laptop that I just started playing with yesterday after I found some older PC games at Value Village. This laptop is an old IBM ThinkPad - great in its day, nearly useless today. It's sporting a 500MHz Celeron (basically a cut-down variant of the Pentium III), 192MB of RAM (which is the unfortunate limit) a 6GB hard disk and Windows Millennium Edition. It works good, and Windows ME is actually rather usable on this machine because it's fully updated and the drivers are complete. It even has USB ports in it, with drivers that Windows ME actually likes. The only real downside to this machine is that it has some pretty nasty stress cracks on the bottom left corner of the screen bezel, something that's pretty much irreversible. What I'm wanting to know is how a modern virus/trojan/adware/other crapware would work on such an outdated version of Windows. Protecting this machine with antivirus software is not an easy task due to the low memory cap. I can connect it to the Internet through Ethernet, and browse basic websites decently on this machine. Now, for a necessary Q and A: Q: Why do you want to do this? A: Because I'm bored, and think it's fun using old computers in a modern era. I'm that oddball that's fine with (and actually enjoys) using outdated hardware to do simple tasks. Q: Why not install a new version of Windows? A: Because I've installed many different versions of Windows on this machine and I simply don't feel like searching for the drivers. Q: Why not use a new computer with a virtual machine? A: Because the experience is not as authentic.
