So, I am working on a server build at work. We purchased 3 ProLiant servers with standard riser chassis. However we needed more then a single PCI express riser, so we purchased the additional riser kits to add 2 more PCI express slots into our primary riser. We are only running 1 CPU at 128 PCI express lanes(plenty for what we need). Where I am neeeing help is the cabling within the chassis. We are able to get the first additional riser (blue cabling) to work in the chassis it is plugged into ports 7 & 13 ref attached images. However when we try to add the third riser (top riser with yellow cabling) into the server, we keep getting a “Improper Cable Order in Slot 1 or 2 error”. I was just hoping someone more knowledgeable could help explain HPEs weird new changes in gen 11 with these new NVME/ PCI express ports and which ports I should be plugging into with a single CPU configuration.

Hi, I just bough a HPE ML110 Gen10 and i thought i would get away with some Kioxia consumer SSD's, long story short and some screaming fans later, i think i have to invest in some enterprise grade SSD's. Do you HPE Gen10 guys have any suggestions for any compatable SSD's known to work?

Hi all, First things first first time poster here however not new to LTT. I have recently purchased a hp ProLiant dl580 G7 server second hand with 32 cores and 230gb of ram. I want to use it in my home lab however the fans are extremely loud to the point where if I put it in another room and close the door, I can still hear it. I have tried to go into ILO, changing the power management settings in the bios (which helped a bit but not much) and my latest attempt has been to replace the fans all together. I replaced the 4 92mm fans with 4 Arctic F9 PWM fans. This unfortunately also did not work because now my ram is overheating becaus i dont have enough airflow. I have seen only one other solution to my problem which involves getting an Arduino board and soldering the control wires to it to control the fans that way however this is something I really do not want to do. So now for my question… does anyone have any ideas on how to make my server quieter / replace the fans / mod the case?

Hey everyone, I have picked up for nothing a used HP proliant ML350 G6 with a raid controller in it. There is though, a multi drive bay with 2 sas connectors that originally went to the raid card that I would like to repurpose for general storage. I have tried connected the bay directly to the mobo, but the drives do not come up. I have asked around and found that I have to have an HBA or raid card. I really don't want to use hardware raid but do not find any hba card on the option parts list. What options do I have to use the bay? I hope this makes sense, still new to server hardware.

I got myself a second drive cage for my DL380 G6 Proliant server and now i didn't realize I'd have this situation Where the power cable just Isn't long enough to reach the 2nd bay, Does anyone know where i can "Jerry rig" it to reach or where i could buy the longer cable, my research tells me Can't find any, even on the spare parts page on HP Unless I Overlooked something, Thanks!

A few months back I picked up an HP Proliant ML110 G7 server to run OMV but I never managed to get it running. Specs: HP Proliant ML110 G7 - Xeon E3-1220@3.10GHz 16GB ECC 2x 300GB SAS & x2 250GB SATA = 1.1TB 8-Port Gigabit Unmanaged Switch - Netgear ProSafe GS108 v3 TP-Link TL-WDR7300 AC2100 router I plan on upgrading its capacity as I get more drives. I have a 3x 3TB and a 6TB I can shuck. I would like to run a NAS with a few 8TB drives but that is for a later day and an operational NAS. I tried for a few days but this system really like booting into its Proliant OS. I tried installing OMV from a USB and from a DVD to a USB drive plugged into the internal port. When I could get it to install it would look like everything was perfect, but on Boot it would go back to its OS. I have been struggling to get this set up. I installed from a USB thumb drive to a second thumb drive plugged into the motherboard. I removed all the hard drives and the optical drive during installation. The installation said it was successful. After installation is said to restart and I was hit with a Grub error. Attempting Boot From USB DriveKey (C:) Error: attempt to read or write outside of disk ‘hd0’ . Entering rescue mode … Grub rescue> Is this an issue related to installing USB to USB? I tried read some thread on this issue but didn't understand how they resolved the issue. Is this system suitable for an OMV or should I sell it and try again with Synology or QNAP? Similar systems have sold on eBay for around £100 This is what I'm working with

HP proliant server. What do I do with this??
fastcar123 posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hey everyone. About a year ago I found an HP ProLiant ML350 G6 server in my neighborhood that someone was literally just giving away. $0 later I have it in my garage. That was a year ago, back when I had extra space for it. But now I am in an apartment with much less space. Currently it is my living room unplugged "serving" as an end table with a lamp on it -.- The specs are: intel xeon E5xxx (I don't actually remember the exact model) 16GB DDR3 ECC memory windows 10pro x64 one 750Watt removable power supply somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5 TB of server grade HDDs that I spent money out of pocket for. The machine does have a raid controller and 8 drive bay, but I don't think it works because it wont read any drives in it. I'm pretty sure this is why previous owner abandoned it. I've tried making it into a NAS, but it went largely unused. I've tried making it into a work computer but it was the least bit practical I haven't tried gaming on it, but I would need a secondary PSU just for the graphics card because the stock PSU doesn't have a 6 pin header. I would need to make an adapter cable that utilized the unused drive bay power for the graphics card. I don't need a webserver, or a game streaming computer. I don't edit videos I don't deal with encrypted data and I have no need to serve more than just my 2 gaming rigs. It weighs a whole lot so it would cost too much to ship it if I were to sell it on ebay. Also it sounds like a jet engine and takes about 15 minutes for it to finally load windows. So tell me. What should I do with this thing? It's a relatively strong platform, but with little upgrade room. It's practically spotless inside and out. Let me know what you think. Does this thing have any use? -
Hi, where can I find the info on highest supported CPU on HP ProLiant DL360 G5. Currently I've got two Intel Xeons X5355 installed, but would like to have a bit more power.

Hey everyone! So about a month ago I bought a HP ProLiant DL160 G6 which is in pretty good shape. Now just yesterday I reapplied new thermal paste to the cpus (Arctic Silver 5) and decided to run a stress test to see what temps I'll be getting under load. But when I started the test I expected the fans to immediately spin up higher than idle to cool the server but they didn't and the temperature just kept rising but the fans didn't react. So is there anything I can do to make the fans actually cool the server while under load or is this normal behavior. I also attached a screenshot of my idle temps. Thanks.

I've got two old HP DL165 G7 servers that I've been using for lab environments at work along with folding and some other random things. I'm trying to install Server 2012 R2 now and when it gets to the Windows Installation screen the server just blue screens and restarts. If I dissolve the RAID and run 1 drive in AHCI the computer doesn't blue screen. The server was running Server 2016 and running folding jobs before this.... Maybe folding fried a CPU??? I watched temps and they never got above 50°C so I don't think thats the issue. Any ideas? The server restarts too quick to see what the error code on the blue screen is. Thanks in advance

Ok, first off this may be a dumb question but I going to buy a HP Proliant G5 but I feel like I want a CPU upgrade beacause the one:s in it is only running at 2Ghz (E5335 Clovertown 65nm) but I dont fell like upgrading to a 150W TDP X5460 because of the immense powerdraw. Is there any way to run Harpertown (45nm) NOTE: Same LGA 771 socket but without swapping any other componets? Thank you for your reponses

My server has fans that use connector similar to mini pcie, has anyone modded this connector or has a pin-out, the stock delta fans are crazy loud.

Hi everyone! I am new to this for first time with Linus Tech Tips which are my favorite on YouTube! So now point to my topic about setting up server in home to get thing up and running in processing so here’s what I need to make sure upgrade CPU, RAM, and Hard drives give enough room to keep it running. I have my own homemade rack mount, CAT5e wires running everywhere, custom router, Cisco equipment of networks, and everything in closet. Heres my current rackmount starting from top to bottom: Top - 24 ports CAT5e patch - Cisco SG300-28PP Switch - Vyatta 2600 (Lanner FW 8760 running untangle) - Desktop monitor and, Keyboard and mouse Middle - Dell Poweredge R610 running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Bottom - 2 Power stripes - CAT 5e intake - Arris CM8200 Other switch is in garage its SG300-10MPP There are two access point, one each in house and in garage, it’s Aironet 3502i dual band wireless N access point. I am looking forward to upgrade Wireless AC. I am not sure if I can choice to stay with Cisco or Ubnt. I only look for more stable, fast enough, roaming around, easy management, and of course, POE support. Two of access point I’m looking into are: Cisco WAP571 or Ubnt Unifi AC. I will be happy to hear from everyone a review those access point which are best and cheap I can find. Feel free to ask me opinion to make a change a better setup than current. So now for my Vyatta what I have, I upgraded in the following specification: CPU - Intel Xeon Quad X3450 4C/8H 2.66 GHz RAM: 16GB 4x 4GB DDR3-10600E UDIMM ECC unbuffers Storage: 1x 128GB SSD MLC (opinion for additional one more SATA, as RAID or ACHI) NIC: 8x Intel NIC OS: Untangle Firewall it running 300/30 providing by Cox but also included Verizon FiOS sitting as not active due switched to Cox to keep lower on bills. Also can upgrade to 1G/35 from Cox or 1G/1G from Verizon FiOS. Cox sucks (no rude but FiOS way better in my opinion due my parents switched it oh well.) My thought is Vyatta 2600 might retire anytime soon so I can get Dell R210 II to run pfsense or untangle I have not yet decision to choice. Reason why upgrade to R210 II cause they have AES supported and X3450 don’t dye old hardware. Now the fun part is storage server so they will be running as Plex Media Server, File Server, and possibly additional VPN, Ubnt, security camera, other server software in future. This storage server will be stay on 24/7 using low usage of power so here’s specification of Dell Poweredge R610. Dell Poweredge R610 CPU - 2x Intel Xeon Quad X5560 4C/8H RAM: 64GB DDR3-10600R ECC Storage: RAID 0 6x 300GB SAS 15K I am looking into upgrade hard drive so I’ve been looking into 6x 1TB or 6x 2TB but I’m not sure which best RAID I can use to storage all movies, personal files, pictures, backup, and many things on it. Also upgrade CPU to X5670 to handle plex media server to runs more than 4 maybe 6 at same time. Any idea would really appreciate it. Ive playing around with HP proliant DL360 G6 I got for $50, it got 1 cpu, X5560 and 4GB RAM and also one 500GB SATA. I will take some time to upgrade to dual X5670 and 64 or 72GB RAM and I am not sure if I can get 4x 1TB or 8x 500GB or 1TB depend on RAID system maximum of capacity. Also best RAID for those hard drive. For custom router, it will be always SSD at best performance and not much going on upgrade. For storage Server on R610 and DL360 G6, I only looking for 7,200 rpm or above hard drive at best but SSD are overkill in my opinion, HDD are longer lifespan than SSD at those day. For RAID setup, I want redundancy and performance at best instead RAID 0 cause it is risk for data loss. That’s why I need your option to find which suit my need. Thank you and looking forward to make this work as happily servers in closet to keep all of us happy, too!

Hi i have question. I using HP proliant dl380 g6 with zotac gtx 1060 6gb with blower, i make custom 10pin sas power to pcie 6pin adapter. Sas connector locks something like drawing in attachments, i use 2x 12V + 4x GND, and rated for 120W by system manufacturer. Power supply is single 750W HP DPS-750RB, I have another one like that but i remove it becouse of better silence and power consumption. It works just fine but time for change and i little worried about power consumption, right now gtx 1060 should consume max something around 200W, but rtx 2060 consume ~50W more. It will be save to run 2060 in this ? Or better to use separate power supply ? I really dont want to fry motherboard, replacement parts is almost impossible to get, or really expensive.

Good evening all - long time watcher but first time poster! I have an entry level HPE Proliant server, the exact model of which can be found here. It has 4 bays OOB, I have one SSD for the OS and 2 WD Reds in RAID1. I'd very much like to expand the storage options - would anyone be able to suggest how best to do this? I don't know whether it's best/possible to purchase another enclosure to connect via USB, or whether there is a better solution I'm just not aware of! All of your advice would be greatly appreciated! :) sw4rm

AndrewMKlasen posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hello, I just received a DL360 G6, I have windows server 2016 install USB and I wan't to boot from it, no matter what I do, It wont boot from the USB, I have made sure that USB is first on the boot order, I have tried all USB ports etc, any help is appreciated. -
Hello, I recently purchased a used dl360p g8. Before the os, The keyboard doesnt work and the caps lock light dosent turn on. I tried multiple keyboards/usb ports. I removed the CMOS battery for a few minutes with no results. I tried installing debian, but the keyboard didnt work when i tried to start the installer. I managed to install ubuntu through a live cd. Wanted to ask for some help before i attempt to flash a new BIOS (cant remember exactly what hp calls it). Thanks! Andy

My HP ProLiant N36L has more or less given up the ghost and no longer can transcode at a good enough speed to be able to use for Plex. Have had a luck and cant really upgrade the processor but cant seem to find what type/size motherboard it is and whether it is up-gradable with a new m/b and processor or whether I need to look at maybe a completely new solution which I am also open to. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with these and if anyone could offer any advice. //Sirob LeRoi

The TACH/RPM signal from a after marked fan is two pulses per revolution. It's "open collector", so the fan provides a pulsed ground connection at described rate. This signal is used to control a P channel mosfet ( Q1 ) that is used to turn optocoupler ( U1 ) off and on. U1 delivers voltage in pulses to the smoothing network ( D1,R1,R2 and C1). It takes 3.5 seconds to discharge C1 down to 6 volts from 12V DC. From what I have read, rotation detect is a simple DC voltage signal. Sadly I have no possibility to test the circuit out, but it should work on HP ML series towers from G5 to at least G8. I don't know if it will work on other models. It should be fairly easy to make a test setup on a Veroboard/stripboard or similar. The HP fan connector can be salvaged from a dead fan, and used to connect to the motherboards fan connector. I take NO responsibility if anyone destroys their motherboard testing this circuit! HP fan connector pin out: Standard PWM 4 pin pinout: Circuit schematic:

Hello All, As the title suggest I have a BMC 601 error on my HP Proliant ML150G6, and I've been unable to fix it thus far. A post suggested that I need to flash the lights out software to fix this, but I can't find anywhere to download this or how to flash it. I've inserted an ethernet jack in both the ports and I read somewhere I should set the IP to static in my bios > advanced > ipmi, but all ip related options there are greyed out. I have installed an E5540 with 2x4GB and a 250GB harddisk with Windows Server 2008 R2. I hope I haven't left out anything but feel free to ask otherwise.

Hey guys, I do not know much about servers, but I have few questions on this server I may buy. It's HP ProLiant DL360 G4. I was thinking of using this for parts for other projects. Here are the specs..... HP ProLiant DL360 G4 CPU: Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz x 2 RAM: 2GB HDDs: 146.8GB 10K RPM SCSI x 2 Network: 1Gbps x 2 Single Power Here are my questions... Is this even a good server from its time and how does it do these days? Could I take the processors and use them in a regular desktop computers mother board? Could I use the hard drives for a regular computer? Is this thing worth $10? Is there anything else valuable in this thing? Thanks, PortzJ

Hi there! A couple of months ago I finished modding a Red/Black HP proliant case. You can have a look at that here:

Server (HP DL360 G5): 1x Xeon E5420 16GB FB DIMM DDR2 800mhz RAM (8 sticks) 2x 72GB SAS HDD Back at it again, now that I have the server working, ubuntu installed and VNC set up I'm ready to get to work. The server right now contains 1 Xeon E5420 and 16gb of FB DIMM DDR2 with 2 SAS HDDs I want to run a minecraft server mainly and from time to time some other game servers (not simultaneously with the minecraft server) Will the 1 CPU be enough, or should I get 2 XEON E5450s? I can get those for 35$ now, but my biggest problem is power consumption. Right now I know that the system draws 100 watts roughly (under a "decent" load). What is all your advice? E5420 enough for minecraft (server only, no client) Will it host any other game servers? Leave your thoughts and opinions down below please

Is the HP ProLiant DL380 Generation 5 (G5) support 64gb total or 32gb. How many DIMMs does it have and what ram does it take PC2-5300F or can it take PC2-4200P (some ram I already have) I have googled the letters at the end of the ram and apparently it doesn't fit because of the notches in the different place but is this true? On the hp site, it says 32gb max on the other sites it says 64gb max. Also, what is the biggest DIMMs it can take 4gb or 8gb? The other day I bought a DL360 G5 server, so I could finally host some game servers and experiment with other features a home server can offer. Now I'm sitting here with a problem, the machine turns on, the fans go to full 100% speed and then turn down, which means it does some posting at least. My monitor, connected through VGA, however says it's an invalid input signal and refuses to show me anything. Is there any way I can see what the machine is doing? The monitor works, it does run on my other comuter The server does some sort of posting, because else the fans would get stuck at 100% The server gives 2 "beep" codes after ~1 minute, 1 long and 2 short and then 2 short. If any more info is needed, feel free to ask me. I have already tried switching system switches 2 and 5 on, to force default settings and not requiring a password. All your help is greatly appreciated! EDIT: I put new thermal paste on the CPU and now I'm only stuck with 1 beep code, 2 short beeps, which could even be explained by the lack of a DVD drive. I can not enter the iLo for some reason, even after figuring out what the IP would be, I just get a blank page. The monitor does work as I've just tested it on a laptop. It seems like we have a busted iGPU here, and the previous owner offered to hook me up with a replacement unit. Thanks for all your help! EDIT2: The grand finale... The server is fine, I just wasted 15$ on gas money to find out that the monitor was the sneaky bad guy... It worked on my laptop, but NOT on the server. When I took the server back to the original owner his monitor showed a screen, boot sequence and no errors, the 2 mysterious beeps after one minute are not the lack of any components or broken components, it means it has reached the end of the boot sequence. I want to hulk smash this deceiving monitor now, but unfortunately it's my neighbor's, so I'll politely hulk smash him instead.
