My father just approved a budget for upgrading our home NAS system. Out current situation is a big scary clusterf*** of things thrown together: our Fritz!Box 7590 (Router) as the NAS server, running the original OS an 8TB Seagate Backup Hub (similar to this one https://a.co/d/gnXQLoF) connected directly to the router via USB two very old more different HDDs, one 500GB and one 250GB, connected through the Seagate Hub to the router via USB We have already transferred most files from the old HDDs to the bigger Backup Hub that we've had for about four years now, but since most of our photos / videos / documents are on there and we don't really have a backup, we want to fix that ASAP. Our current total is around 2-3TB, so 8TB of storage should still be plenty, but having a clear upgrade path regarding capacity would be a great bonus. My initial thought was getting two new identical 8TB drives, throwing them in a RAID1 array, and then using a cloud service as our secondary and offsite copy. For our new server, my plan was to salvage parts from my 6-7 year old budget PC: Pentium G4560 processor Asrock B250M Pro 4 motherboard (mATX) 16GB of Kingstom Memory possibly the 450W PSU and case, which are attached to each other, though a smaller / even server centric case would be nicer I know that the CPU is incredibly weak, and I'm not sure if it's strong enough for running a server and RAID array like that. Should we go for a cheap 7th gen processor off the second hand market instead? The NAS is mostly used for long term storage and uploading files to it, but I occasionally need bulks of data from it and edit files (no video though) directly off of it - it would be nice if all that was possible in a relatively fast manner. Also, OS: I've played around with proxmox for virtualisation before, but never for storage. Would TrueNAS (Scale) be the right option, since Jake seems to be obsessed I'm a computer science student and have been into tech for a while, so figuring out how to use either shouldn't be an issue (hopefully :D). Lastly, I'd love to hear recommendations for a cloud service to use. Do y'all have a favorite that works well and is affordable? It would be great if we could use something like rsync for bidirectional syncing, such that we can upload new files to either, but we don't necessarily need that. If it makes it cheaper, it's also fine if the cloud service is exclusively a backup that we can only access in case something goes wrong with our own main server. Oh, and if all of this makes zero sense and would be totally overkill / underpowered, please don't hold back and correct me! Always eager to learn. The system should be very robust though, in a way that we don't have to think about it too much. And the data is quite important to us, as you can imagine. I am facing one problem and looking for a solution. In my desktop PC I am currently, having: 2TB Western Digital 2TB Toshiba 1TB Western Digital 2TB Seagate All drives are connected to my MBO in desktop PC via SATA III connectors. Moreover, I am planning to buy a home NAS server with 4 or 5 drive bays. But, the problem is, as specified from the title and above, I have 4 different HDDs. How can I have a copy or clone all of them to I do not know if that's possible either? Planning for a long time to buy some NAS and have 4x HDDs (IronWolf Pro) with the capacity of 2TB (at least) and put them into a RAID 1 mode (if that's the good one I need?). But before that, I do not know how can I move or duplicate data from all of my 4x HDDs around? What software to use and how do do it without losing all of them in the process? Should I use Acronis software for that or what other? Moreover, I have not yet used it so I do not know much how to work with ti at all - have to try out on Virtual Machine first ... Also, would like to know if there is possibillity to have data in Cloud? If so, what are the costs of it? Moreover, I believe I would need a month to take to upload my HDDs to some cloud on my internet connection speed at home Any advice and information appreciate! Thank you!

Hi, LTT Community I am having some trouble finding a compatible PCIe x8 or x16(prefered) RAID Controller for a new server. I would like a LSI MegaRAID controller but so far haven't had any luck find one. The server hardware is a Norco RPC-4116, Supermicro H8DGI-F motherboard, 2xAMD Opteron 6376 2.3ghz, 64GB DDR3 ECC memory, WD Blue 1TB SSD boot drive, 16x8TB SATA WD RED Pro drives, and 6x500GB WD Blue SSD cache. My biggest problem seems to be the 8TB WD RED Pro drives. With these drives the two problems I'm seeing are the size is to large or the RED Pro is not supported entirely. I do not wish to change brands as I'm a big fan of WD and with that said I also don't wish to upgrade to the WD Golds which are in my 500TB vaults as they were pricey. I will be running RAID 6 on FreeNAS, sorry I didn't say sooner. Thank you in advance for the help.

Hello all, new to the forums and am have an issue with my FreeNAS server build. I currently have an AsRock Rack EP2C602 motherboard that I am installing FreeNAS on (flash media). I'm using two E5-2660 Xenon processors and 32GB ECC RAM. I was able to install FreeNAS on the USB Flash but the motherboard BIOS is not detecting my Western Digital 3TB Red (NAS) SATA drives. I checked the PS SATA power and it was good. I swapped around the SATA ports. It has 14 ports (6 SATA III, 8 SATA II). The MB post looks fine. There are no error codes. I disconnected all but one drive. Still no luck in BIOS. I have updated the AsRock BIOS as well. I also swapped one of the drives to my Windows computer but the BIOS there didn't even detect it. At this point I was thinking "aw crap, I have a bad drive" but I took one of the other NAS Drives and put it in my Windows computer and STILL NO BIOS detection! I am new to using NAS drives. Is there something different about them that I don't know? I have 8 - 3TB drives and they can't all be bad...? Does anyone know whats going on here??

So I am looking for everyones opinion on this topic. I was looking into building a Nas server because I have just hard drive after hard drive sitting on my desk at home and with me traveling quite a bit I dont want to carry the drives just in case they crash from a bag drop or what not. (dont worry I have back ups I do every couple of days). My Tech friend said NAS is the thing of the past and he uses Google, Dropbox, Etc. To me I kinda like the feeling of having everything at home in all in my control. What are your guys thoughts concerns and which do you prefer. Also what are the Perks, Drawbacks of having either? I am looking to buy some time in near future a NAS server. I am looking at this stage at the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra . I know making a NAS on your pc is best and cost effective, but I prefer a standalone device that is not expensive but effective for my use. I will be using it to download media stored on it to watch it before deleting on local machine and upload new media for other family members to watch and do the same. I prefer a good speed but not the best and would like to 2 have the HDD's hot swap compatible.

I have a basic ReadyNas from NetGear and I am afraid it is failing or it is just becoming slow. I will probably need a bigger NAS for client files in the near future. Should I build a custom NAS with FreeNAS or just buy something like Synology NAS? I can't decide which will be more reliable, have the most possible storage and save me money. I also want the ability for remote access and cloud backup. Any thoughts? Is there a TechTip video/Post for this already?

Don't know where to post it, since it's a bit about a nas server i thought i would ask here. I must admit i bought the wrong nas server a Synology DS214 i shoud have bought the one from asustor 202TE (it has hdmi connection for watching movies) . I want sometimes to watch my movies on my tv and there for ned something to comtroll it, sent it to my tv and play all the for mat i have like mp4,flv (both youtube but not using youtube) and vob (dvd format). I thought a cheap WD TV LIVE was the one for me, it froze after 10-15 min(turn off power and on again and it rebooted), it sometimes played my video's i have but most of the times it refused to play it, so the WD TV LIVE didn't work for me (first thing i did was updating the software). I need someting cheap (max 100€) that will play my movies on my tv (to much limited on the format a chromecast can play, have one, want best quality,losless, something that won't change the quality of my movies,mp4,webm "chromcast" is NOT losless) Have thought about this one http://www.minix.com.hk/Products/MINIX-NEO-X5mini.html just not shure if it can handle resolutions other then hd/full hd i have regular youtube quality (360/480) dvd,hd and full hd movies,videos
