Hello LTT community. Recently I was able to score a bargain on an Asus Rampage II Extreme + i7 920 combo, and this gave me the idea of building a secondary gaming PC around it that I could put in the living room (sure this platform is outdated and not power efficient in the slightest but it can still pack a solid punch). Anyway, I found a 4x4GB 1333MHz DDR3 kit, but there seems to be what I assume is a memory channel issue: by installing the 4 modules in the recommended configuration (so slots A2, A1, B1, C1), the BIOS would only pick up 8GB, while in Windows it would state 16GB with 8GB usable. After this I tried multiple different memory configurations while also swapping the modules around and these were the results: A1, B1, C1 --> still 8GB detected A1, B1 --> 4GB detected A2, A1, B2, B1 --> doesn't POST B2, B1, C2, C1 --> detectes the full 16GB and everything works as it should I could just use it in the last configuration, but then it wouldn't take advantage of triple channel, and I probably wouldn't be able to upgrade to 24GB in the future if I wanted to. So now I'm asking you for help: is there something I can try to do or do I just have to rule this off as a dead memory channel? I've already updated the BIOS to the latest version, reseated the CPU and checked the socket but found no bent or broken pins. I've heard some people say that excessive CPU cooler mounting pressure could cause memory issues: while I don't think I overtightened the cooler's screws, is it worth it to look into this potential solution or is it unlikely? And if it ends up being an actual dead memory channel, in your experience, is it most likely to be the CPU or motherboard's fault? I'd hope for the former since I was thinking of selling it and swapping it for a 6 core down the line anyway. Tell me what you think about this, I'm open to suggestions.

Hi friends I have a 13 year old PC that is still trucking and is proving to be a decent gaming machine even today. Looking for some advice. I want to upgrade the CPU to something more powerful. Looking for some advice on the best CPUs for this old LGA1366 board. I currently have 12GB RAM but the board can take a max of 24GB, will I see a huge difference adding the extra 12GB? Spec i7 920 @ 3.00Ghz 12GB DDR3 GTX1060 6GB MSI X58 Platinum mobo Win 10 Pro Thank you.

Hi guys, i would really appreciate your input: At the moment i run a pretty old System ( 2009 ): - Mainboard: ASUS P6T - Prozessor: Intel i 7 920 @2,67 GHZ - Ram: 6 GB DDR3 and a old AMD Radeon Series with 2 GB OS is Win10 64bit I am thinking of building a new System but that wont happen til next year. And i wanted to start a little projekt where i probably switch the graphicscard. I wanna game - but not hardcore - 60 Hz is enough for me. But i got a new Panel comming (21:9) with a resolution of: 3440x1440 So i am thinking about buying a new graphicscard. My main cause of concern: The Mainboard only supports PCIe 2.0 x16 So how big of a bottleneck-problem do u think i got with PCIe 2.0 x16 in real life applications and games. Did anyone put a modern card in such an old System ? like a gtx 750/950 or 1070 ? Are there interesting AMD alternatives ? i am happy to hear about your experiences (also compatibaly wise) Cheers

Hi guys, i need your help. I wanna move my old gaming set up in a new Case (dont have a warehouse to store all my stuff ) Setup: Core i7 920 Asus P6t My main Problem: At the moment i use some pretty big 'Alpenföhn' Cooler and i dont have enough clearance in the new case. Since the TDP of the old i7 is 130 Watts (not overclocked) i was wandering if u have some tips for me. I am searching for something like the NH-L12 but Nuctua writes on their Page u should only use them til 95 Watt. Priority first would be aircooled. But i am also open to try some AIO Watercooling solutions ( i thought probably the Masterliquid pro 120 or 240). i would really appreciate some input. (And i know - its an old system but its still working fine and i dont wanna trash it). Thanks Hans-Linus

Is the 4-year-old GTX 660 still relevant? The GTX 660 was a very popular card of its time, and it was still the most popular dedicated GPU in steams hardware survey in early 2014. Currently the GTX 660 and other similar cards from the same era can be picked up for around 60USD used, which is about the same price as a new GT 730. So, if you are planning to build a budget system, should you get one? To find out I have built a budget-oriented system around the card. Can’t be bothered reading? Watch my video here: The Parts The build uses many of the parts I used when I tested the Intel Core i7 920 here. As seen in the previously mentioned post, this CPU, motherboard and RAM combo should be more than adequate to power our GTX 660 without any bottlenecks. CPU, Motherboard and Cooler I was able to get the i7 920, ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 and Cooler Master V8 cooler seen in this build used for around 45USD, an absolute steal for the price. The CPU overclocks well and is able to reach 4.2GHz with the Cooler Master V8, although with temperatures in excess of 90c. The motherboard is slightly broken, as the two middle RAM slots do not work. This unfortunately hinders the full potential of a triple channel ram configuration, but a dual channel 1600MHz setup is in no way bad. GPU The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 Windforce 2X OC featured in this video was the GPU in my main rig from late 2013 until this summer, when I upgraded to a GTX 980Ti. This GPU has served me very well over the years last three years. The GTX 660 features a fully unlocked GK106 GPU that is based on the 28nm Kepler architecture. The GK106 GPU packs 960 CUDA cores with a 140W TDP, meaning that the card only needs one 6-pin PCIE power connector. This specific Gigabyte card has been slightly overclocked out of the box, with a 1032MHz base clock, a 5% boost over the stock 980MHz base clock. Most GTX 660 have 2GB of 6GHz GDDR5 VRAM on a 192-bit bus, but there are 3GB variants available. RAM For RAM I have installed four 4GB sticks of OEM DDR3 RAM for a total of 16GB in the system. This OEM ram is rated for 1333MHz CL9 at 1.5v, but it happily overclocks to 1600MHz CL9 at 1.65v. 16GB is plenty for gaming, and is more than adequate for 1080p video editing or four chrome tabs. Storage For storage, I have stolen the 240GB Kingston UV400 SSD and the 750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 from my test bench. The SSD has plenty of space at 240GB, and the HDD nicely complements this with 750GB of storage for bigger games and files that do not fit on the SSD. Power supply The Corsair TX650 with its 650W is plenty for this build. Any decent quality unit over 500W should be able to power a build like this. The Corsair used Seasonic as the OEM for this PSU, so the quality is rather good. Case I found this Cooler Master HAF 922 in a dumpster, and it is not a bad chassis. It's not in perfect condition and might not have all of the creature comforts of a modern case like a black interior and USB 3, but for a budget build, it works quite well, after some cleaning that is. Specs Intel Core i7 920 @ 4.2GHz ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 (X58) 16GB (4x4Gb) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 Windforce 2X OC Kingston UV400 240GB (OS) Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 750GB (Games) Corsair TX650 (650W) Cooler Master HAF 922 Build and Benchmarks A time-lapse of the building process can be found at 0:40 and benchmarks can be found at 2:41 in the video below. The Finished Product Conclusion Overall, the GTX 660 is still a very capable card for 60USD. Paired with a good enough CPU, it can play modern titles at medium to high settings at 1080p. So back to the question I asked in the beginning of this post, if you are planning to build a budget system, should you get one? I would say yes, if you can get it for the right price and if it fits your budget. You might also want to consider other similar cards from the same era, like the 660Ti or the Radeon 7850/7870.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS HAS BEEN FIXED: CHECK THE VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hi my name is Joris and I have a real pain in the ass issue with my (older) gaming pc. After booting up my good old gaming rig from way back I noticed a hughe decrease in performance. I looked for usual errors like dust, drivers, temps, ram speed, bad overclock, old bios driver, old gpu driver... Then I found the issue. While playing games only one core is really working. Taskmenager and HWmonitor both show all cores (threads) active. But only on bar is filled up and when it hits 99% I get terrible lag. Some games are ofcours more cpu intensive then others (unturned ran at low settings around 150Fps, insurgency 40 whit heavy lagspikes, gta v 30 with terrible lag, warthunder runs good but not how it should. Remember these games are not single thread games. (only 60 fos top with 1050 ti). I tried overclocking the cpu and that did improve the performance by a little. But I’m not able to fix this issue any on an idea? The cpu is just not spreading out its load to all of its cores. Thank you!! @JoostinOnline@Majestic @kelvinhall05 @Pasi123 @Catsrules and @Agentx_007 FOR EVERYONE WHO MIGHT BE INTRESTED IN THIS FIX (not permanent) you might find a better way. I’m really out of idees right now is this a bad cpu or a bad mobo or just a system error/ software error. In case that it is the cpu could i upgrade to Xeon X5560? Or does my mobo not support that one?

Hi all! My Skylake 6700k is in the mail!!! Together with : - 16 gb ram HyperX - 750 Watts PSU - Gigabyte Motherboard (with usb 3.1, type c and full of good sh** :3 ) However, I'll be re-using pieces from my old computer : - SSD - GPU - CPU fan (maybe) I had a CoolerMaster fan for an i7 920, bought about 4 years ago, Can anyone tell me if the heatsink should be large enough or if I'm better to buy a new CPU fan right away? Ohh, I even found the exact model of cpu fan I have, here. I couldn't find a picture of the different i7 generations side to side to see if the sizes are simmilar, if you guys know where to find this comparison that'd be great!

I recently replaced my stock cooler for my CPU which is a Core i7 920 with a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 and fired up a game to see the temperature while under load. The temperature runs up to 70c when i'm playing games and at idles at around 51c. Is that normal for a i7? I know the 920 is quite old and runs pretty hot but i'm starting to think maybe I might have over applied or mounted the heatsink wrong.

I'm gonna be switching out my motherboard and CPU (A8 5500) to a i7 920 with a Rampage II Gene. It's been a long time since I've used Intel cpus and I forgot how the process goes when we switch. Do we have to completely reformat our HDD or is there a way to transfer them without removing any files?

So I plan to build a budget oriented gaming PC and I was wondering about CPUs. Keep in mind that I live in Australia and our tech prices are insanely high compared to America's. Now, due to money I'm getting the PC without the GPU first and then getting the GPU later on when I have the money. The GPU I plan to get is the GTX 960 4GB from Gigabyte. My main question is whether I should buy an Intel Celeron G1850 which has 2 cores, no hyperthreading and is clocked at 2.9GHz or get a second-hand i7 920 which is clocked at 2.6GHz but has 4 physical cores and hyperthreading and has more cache. The lowest I have seen an i7 920 on Ebay is ~$22 (including postage) and I can get a LGA 1366 motherboard for $50-$70. The Celeron is $50-$60 and I can get an LGA 1150 for around about the same cost. The other components I can get for all less than $100 each besides the GPU. Any feedback would be awesome.

Hello, I have an older custom pc that I can't seem to fix. Specs generally as follows: i7 920 w/ hyper 212 asus x58 mobo 8gb ddr3 2x4 from corsair asus gtx 760 2gb 800 watt corsair psu I apologize for not knowing the exact parts, it's not my own pc. Anyway, it's looping at the start, everything spins up but i get no video output whatsoever Tried switching psu, ram, and gpu with no luck. I'm suspecting the memory controller might have given up on life.

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a eVGA Gtx 970 in the next couple of days and was wondering how much my i7 920 @ 2.6ghz would be limiting (or bottlenecking) the 970? I'm hoping not that much as I wish to get the most out of the 970. Thanks in advance, Skwoad

Hello, I have a i7-920 and i think it is bottlenecking my gtx 770 because the power is only 75%. I can't OC because my motherboard because its locked. So should i buy the fx 6300 and OC it. Because i dont want to pay a lot of money. Or does anyone have a better idea? Thank you.

Long story short; I've been playing sleeping dogs and there are times when the fps will drop well bellow 60 fps, even though the gpu usage isn't that high. At first I assumed that my i7 920 3,8ghz was bottlenecking my 680 but that's not the case according to this: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/846953284661366164/08CD506168191B1B0E8354BFB72678CBD289188E/ (feel free to inform me on how to add stuff to my gallery) Max core usage 63% and overall usage 36%. I would still assume that this is cpu related though, seeing as the gpu will never reach 99% usage, not even at the lowest settings. I've also identified the two settings which pull me bellow 60fps as; 'world density' and shadow resolution. 'World density' would make sense seeing as it's tied to the cpu (unless I'm mistaken?), but the performance impact of the 'shadow resolution' dose seem a bit odd to me, especially given the amount of vram I have to spare. The only other possible culprit I can think of besides the cpu is the psu, but it's a corsair tx 850 watts (from a few years back) so I find it hard to believe that it could be the problem. That said; psus aren't my strong side. Any input would be appreciated :) EDIT: I usually play with everything maxed except for AA which I promptly leave off.

So I've been running this i7 920 since it came out and and I think it's dying. It's currently 20C in my room. Running nothing but Steam and Chrome, and my i7 is running 55, playing games it will often go up to 78 although it will hover around 70. I can't even think of running prime95 without my i7 crying. I have an antec kuhler h2o 920 as my current cooling method that has a good supply of cool air and I have reseated my cpu cooler a couple times over the past few months to see if I applied the thermal compound wrong (arctic silver 5). I get these temps enough though I have hyper-threading off, the cpu underclocked and undervolted. So my question is should I drop 220 on the g3258 and a nice z97 (so I can upgrade in a year or two when I have the cash for another i7) I would think that the kuhler h2o would be able to get a pretty decent overclock on the g3258 and from what I've seen from a linus tech video it performs close to the latest i7 (in games). I don't really do anything other than internet and video game on this rig, so I'm not sure if I would be missing out on much in terms of all the features that are cut on this cpu. So what would be my best course of action? Thanks! Rest of rig 6gb ddr3 750w thermatake 80bronze 7970 double d asus p6x58d

Hello, I come to you asking for some knowledge and advice. In my current gaming rig (4 years old) I was planing to overclock my CPU and upgrade my GPU to a GTX780 or GTX780Ti. Will my CPU bottleneck the GTX780/780Ti? Another option would be to save up and eventually upgrade my Motherborad, GPU and CPU. The goal is to improve my gaming experience and ensure future games are able to run decently at high resolutions. I am planning to play games such as Titanfall (once it comes out of course, no system specs as of yet), some BF4, COD: Ghost (Unplayable at the moment; lag, stutters), Mass Effect 4, Watchdogs, The Division and etc… I normally play at 1920x1200 resolution, I would be happy with getting 60fps and above in multiplayer games or 30fps and above on single player games. Please, advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated! My first post on this forums, so big HELLO! There's a lot to this thread, but I'll try to keep it short. I'm software engineer by profession and gamer by heart and I want machine that I can reliably do both on. I have an old 7.5 years old PC! but it's still very reliable and does most of what I need (apart from the games running beautifully). Here's the list what I have now: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/oshsama/saved/FVQvK8 To say shortly what I need the most is new graphics card, storage and more memory. Here's more or less what I'm looking to buy: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/oshsama/saved/GPKD3C Why am I thinking of buying those? - Ryzen 1800X I know that CPU can last long time and I hope with those 8 cores this will (heopfully) last long time for me. I want those extra cores for multitasking while I'm working etc; - motherboard is simply to satisfy my IO needs. Not sure why I would spend twice as much or more for features that I don't think I would ever need; - I want fast memory for great performance in games and running multiple VMs when needed - 32GB for now with option to upgrade to 64GB if needed in few years; - if you looked at my current part list you probably noticed I still use HDD *cries*. I want a really fast disk for changing branches in repositories, reindexing symbols etc. (work) and over-all great performance. I read that apparently those M2 drives deliver such great IOPS numbers, because they have built-in RAID controllers and I can achieve virtually the same using regular, much cheaper SSDs in RAID mode - is this really the case, is there no bottle-neck on either of those options?; - graphics this is mainly for gaming and I think there's no real reason to pay premium for Ti or even new Titan (btw, I want to run my games on nearly max settings, I hope this will be enough) - monitor of choice is either Acer Predator XB271hu vs Asus ROG PG279Q (27" 1440p IPS with G-sync and high refresh rate) I think you get a drift of what am I looking to get. Now the real question is what do I do with all these parts that I have and what am I looking to get. I started questioning buying half of the new parts - maybe there's no need for that. I was thinking that I would probably try to sell the old computer in one box rather than in parts, somehow it feels better, but then again I potentially lose even more value this way. Then I was thinking of what else can I do and I started thinking of building on top of my existing PC. What a crazy idea! mixing 7 y/o parts with some of the market newest, but maybe it's not that crazy after all. Here's what I need help with - will it even work and if so - is it worth it? So I would stick to my CPU and motherboard (https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6T_SE/specifications/). I can get better cooling and fairly easy OC my PC to 4GHz stable (got i7 920 d0). I actually played with it already and I'm running 3.6Ghz right now on simple cooler and the temps are stable around 45-50 deg. It does get up to around 80 under stress-test, but while playing it hardly ever goes above 55. I guess, this would be enough for a while. The question is - am I able to install Nvidia 1080 in this? I have PCIe 2.0 x16, but apparently this is backwards compatible. I'm quite a nub with this, so Idk what performance am I actually losing? I imagine in gaming data is being loaded from disk to the graphics card, rendered over there and put through to display and CPU has not much to do with that. So the slowest part would be the initial load of the data. Am I correct (probably not)? Another incompatible part is the storage, cause I obviously don't have M2, but this is details - I can either RAID SSDs or use PCIe. Memory I can get up to 24GB 2 x 3-channel (OC to 2GHz) which should be enough for a while. PSU I have good, case as well, would just probably buy USB 3.1 adapter or something. One last thing I want to mention is that I consider to start streaming, but I don't think that would have a massive impact even on my old skeleton? What do you guys think about this?
