I have been trying FOR DAYS to get a home server up and running using the godawful ISP-provided ZTE F670L (Datasheet PDF Link). Not only that but the dashboard (or control panel) has so many spelling mistakes, sentences that make no sense at all, Wi-Fi devices cannot communicate with devices on LAN, etc. Since I live in Egypt, I cannot get another router/modem that supports a fibre cable (GPON). I thought about getting a new router/modem, connecting that to my ISP-provided piece of garbage, and using the better product to manage the network. The problem is, I am pretty new to all of this, and I did my research and narrowed my options to either the Archer C86 AC1900 or the Archer VR2100 AC2100, both from TP-Link (which I assume is a trusted manufacturer). Which of these options is better for my situation, and how can I connect the two devices (my ISP garbage and the new device) to achieve what I want? I would be very grateful if any of you wizards out there could help. Thanks!

Budget (including currency): Hopefully a bit cheaper than what it is right now. Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I'm doing AI, NAS with FTP, VPN, Teamspeak 5, Jellyfin, light home automation, web hosting, and a lot of game servers. I also want some spare power if I add another service to it. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Right now I've made this online:

I apologize for the long winded explanation of the issue... I am completely lost here. I am trying to access a few newly added web apps I intend to host. When trying to reach them I get nothing. Beating my head against the wall for a few days with no luck. Not sure what new link in the chain is kicking me. Some background: Currently I host several web applications out of my home server running TrueNAS Scale Bluefin 22.12.0. My setup for accessing them is simple: TrueNAS machine Truechart or Official Chart app Node Proxy Manager (Truechart) (Port 443) Port 443 forwarded on router to TrueNAS machine Domain (Cloudflare NS & Proxy) points to my home IP. Profit.. This has worked wonderful for me, but I am getting sick of TrueNAS Charts, and even more sick of Truecharts. Desired new setup: I have installed a debian VM running docker and portainer on the TrueNAS machine. I have a bridge setup as the network interface on this VM. I can access portainer using 192.168.1.101:9443. Great! Seems to work. Add a new container, 192.168.1.101:8443... I'm in, awesome. Add new domains to NodeProxyManager. Nothing. Can't get in. Odd. When I open the ports on my router they become accessible. I can use Node to forward to my desktop without issue. What is or isn't working: For example, just to test I spun up codiad. http://192.168.1.101:7443 https://code.domain.tld (Proxied by cloudflare) This is the one I would like to be working https://home.domain.tld (Not proxied, but pointing to the same IP) https://home.domain.tld:7443 (Not proxied, port opened at router pointing to VM IP) https://code.domain.tld:7443 (Proxied, port opened at router pointing to VM IP) https://home.ip:7443 (port opened at router pointing to VM IP) So, opening the ports directly works, but only when not proxied. (Not a real option for my use case) Level1Techs uses a VPN to access all the apps in the guide I read, but some of my apps are meant to be public. Any time NPM is in the chain it seems to break, but I don't have any issues using it for other devices on my network, including the TrueNAS charts on the same machine. NodeProxyManager setup (It also has home.domain.tld pointing to this same entry for testing) Info Physical NIC/TrueNAS NIC IP: 192.168.1.100/24 Bridge/debian VM IP: 192.168.1.101/24 Router: Dream Machine Pro: IP 192.168.1.1/24 I setup my VM, docker environment, and portainer following this guide from level1techs Any ideas on how to resolve this issue would be extremely appreciated.

Hi, I am getting a second hand dell precision tower 3620 pc with the following specs 8gb ddr4 ram intel core i7-6700 cpu@3.40ghz intel HD Graphics 530 windows 10-pro 256 gb ssd and 1tb hdd. I am getting this at 200 dollars in Singapore. I majorly want to set this PC up as a home server and install proxmox as a hypervisor and then run TrueNAS scale, Jellyfin, Pihole, Wireguard, Nextcloud, Photoprism and Frigate. I have 20 IP Hikvision Cameras around my house and I am currently using a TP Link Omada SDN solution to connect my ER 605 router along with all the POE switches, Gigabit Switches and access points. I am planning to purchase 4 Seagate Ironwolf HDDs, each of 6TB capacity. However, the dell product specifications page says that maximum capacity of 7200RPM drive supported is only 2TB. https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-sg/precision-t3620-workstation/prec_t3620_om_pub/specifications?guid=guid-0a90134e-599f-4abc-b76b-4bbf7c540321&lang=en-us Now, I am confused whether this system will support the hard drives or not. I also want to seek recommendations if this configuration can house all the services or not? I will mostly be running containers for all services except truenas. I plan to have a total RAM of 16 GB and total storage of 18 TB (4 drives of 6TB in raid Z1) Further, Frigate recommends to add a TPU for better image recognition. I wanted to know if I can add a cheap GPU (GTX 1060) instead of a TPU to achieve the same performance? I am asking this since the GPU can be helpful in media transcoding as well for Jellyfin. My workload is not heavy and it will be a normal home use case server. Also, can I rackmount this precision 3620 box? I already have some network racks in my home. Height is 14.17 inches, width is 6.88 inches and depth is 17.12 inches). If so, what are some recommended ways to rackmount a normal mini tower form factor of a case? Thankyou.

Hello, LTT forumers! At the moment im running a PLEX server (when i need it) from my gaming pc. As i've been studying Golang a bit lately i would like to try to "launch" a Golang web app, at least accessible on my LAN. So the idea in my head is brewing that i should reutilize my old laptop as a server just for that purpose and that exactly is where it starts to get tricky. What my soon-to-be server would need to do: - Plex - Nextcloud (probably just some pictures) - Golang apps + databases - maybe something more? Questions related to that: - Should it be a virtual machine on top of my W10 laptop? - Ubuntu server or desktop? -- Or maybe even something else? - How do i "deploy" a Golang app on my server? - Or should i buy an "old random pc"? So the idea is to have at first a sandbox server to be able to try out how things work etc, hence, should i run a VM on my W10 laptop or just go to (some form) of Ubuntu etc.. I hope you guys can direct me in a path to choose. Thanks!

Hello!! I'm looking to host a minecraft server for a few friends of mine. I'm curious if there is an option for deploying one on my Ubuntu server in a docker container and be able to make changes to the Minecraft server through a web gui. That way I can grant access to my less technically apt friends for them to add mods or adjust world settings. Are there any viable options for me? If for some reason I need to run it on a physically separate server in order to do so that's fine as well. Thank you for your time!

I am looking to rebuild my home data server. I need a new computer case. It needs to have space for at least 6 3.5" Hard drives. I like Corsair case, but CoolerMaster or a similar brand is okay too. I already had an old Z87-A Motherboard that supports Raid 5. but this case needs to support ATX Motherboard and the aforementioned HDDs. Also, I'd like to have good airflow on the intake since I assume that's where the HDDs we'll be stored. I usually buy from Amazon. So links to cases would be appreciated. P.S. I don't want to spend more than at least $80 to 100 on a case.

Hey all, I'm fresh into server/NAS setups, and my knowledge is minimal on the entire process. I have my old PC (Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB ram, GTX 1060) running TrueNas Core with a small scrap SSD. This holds a small SMB share (holds non-important data currently due to limited space and need), an always-running home assistant VM and occasionally a Linux VM running a Minecraft server. My next forte is into setting up a better NAS setup (installing usable storage, using it for semi-significant files), and a plex (or alternative) for hosting my old DVD / Blu-Ray collection. That said, I'd like to make the move now to something more flexible, allowing me to create VMs with GPU passthrough, etc. in the future, as I've learned that TrueNAS core doesn't support passthrough at all, and Scale requires a host GPU when one is installed despite being fully functional headless. TL;DR: I need a more all-in-one OS for my home-server, any recommendations are appreciated!

Budget (including currency): $1000 (USD) Country: USA Used for: Media, Software, Document, and possible VM Storage Details: I have a few left over parts that I have had from previous pc builds I've completed for others in the recent past. I don't do it often but I really enjoy just building computers for the heck of it. Anway I have the following just laying around doing nothing and I think it's time I build a NAS for storing things online and offline. Currently I have: Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro WiFi About 30 TB cobined mix of M.2 and SATA SSDs, and HDDs Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 850w RGB Intel i3 9100 32gb Corsair Vengence mem TOO MANY Noctua 120mm fans Thermaltake View 51 and View 71 cases NVidia GeForce 7800 GT OC NVidia GeForce GTX 710 NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 NVidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti NVidia GeForce GTX 1660S Obviously some of this is overkill and some could use some serious just gotten rid of. What Hardware would be best though get get a NAS up and working. I'd rather buy new and replace something overkill or that may not be suitable.

Thoughts/Advice Welcomed. I want to build a server that will be mainly used for Minecraft server hosting. It will be a public server but the system will be locked down to local machine access. I was wondering if anyone has any insight on my build as this is the first time I will be building something for a use case like this. The reason I went with the ryzen 5 3600x on the list is because I will be getting it at a discount and it is also a placeholder in-case my budget expands and we get a ryzen 9 5950x. I think that the SSD is probably not the best choice so some help there would be appreciated. Hi there, I was curious about building a cheapest NAS or cloud server for only sharing or storing files over my Wi-fi network. Is it possible? I am not talking about Rassberry pi 4 rather than more cheaper module like Rassberry Pi Zero W, I want to know is there a more cheaper way? It would be better if it is possible to attach External Hard Drive or any USB storage. Just fun to ask.

1. Budget & Location £1000 & UK 2. Aim The system will primarily be used as a central storage device for photographs, CAD files and documents. I acquired a Lenovo ThinkCentre M93 Desktop - Type 10A2. It is a small form factor case with an Intel Core i3-4150 (3.5GHz). This is the basic system I will be using for my build. So far I have upgraded to 24GB RAM (soon to be 32GB). I have also installed an Icy Dock ToughArmor MB606SPO-B to fill with 2.5 inch SSDs as of when they are required. For the time being I am planning to order two Samsung 870 Evo 4TB SSDs which will take up roughly £870 of my budget. I estimate 3-4TB of data will be moved onto them straight away. There is a 3.5 inch bay in the case and possibly room to mount another 2.5 inch drive. There are three SATA ports and one eSATA port on the motherboard. I am looking to get a PCIe SATA expansion card but not sure what to get as there are a lot of them on the market from different manufacturers. The ThinkCentre does not have a WiFi card and there are no ethernet sockets in the house. I looked at powerline adapters for a wired connection to the router. I have other devices like TV boxes that I would like to give an internet connection to as well. We receive about 50 Mbps download and 14 Mbps upload. Running ethernet cables under the floor finishes is not an option either. Perhaps USB WiFi adapters would be better? Can you have too many WiFi devices? It would be nice to upgrade it to an i7-4790 and a low profile GPU but with the current price situation I will not be doing so. In terms of potential desktop use it would be running Autodesk Revit, Adobe CC and Rhinoceros 3D. 3. Monitors Currently there is only one office monitor a 19 inch HP w1907 1440x900 LCD Monitor. However, if I ever get hold of a new power adapter for my LG monitor then I will be able to move my stand-in monitor, a SAMSUNG LS34J550 Quad HD 34" LED Monitor (3440x1440) into the office. 4. Peripherals Windows 10/11 would be the most user friendly option given everyone will use it. It would be nice to have the full NAS functionality that the MyCloud had but shared drives on a local network may be sufficient. There is one Mac device that would need access. I have looked at TrueNAS and UnRaid and the possibility of running a VM on the ThinkCentre but would appreciate any advice on this as it is not something I have done before. I have read and watched a lot on different home server/ NAS set ups and it looks an absolute minefield. I also need to set up a reliable back up system so there is that as well. 5. Why are you upgrading? Our 2TB Western Digital MyCloud NAS is full and is about to lose support and security updates. It would be a lot easier to have a secure central system for storage rather than lots of HDDs none of which are organised. Currently there is not a desktop in the office with laptops instead being interchanged with a monitor but a communal office desktop would be a lot more desirable.

Hello everybody, We are looking to install multiple internet connection trought out our house. There should be 10-ish connection in total. Internet cable are all ready installed,(cat 5e) in the most part, just need to be terminated, thats not the problem. I need sugestion for how to connect all these device + a media server (plex server to be config). We have a 1gb/s internet connection from our IPS and most device need to be connected to internet. Do you have any suggestion for a switch that could meet those specs, easy to use for an amateur and most important, silent enough. I am in no way an expert, so if you have suggestion for software, hardware, etc, go for it thanks a lot -edit : I also need some sort of tutorial on how to setup thing coorectly. LTT did a video not long ago for a plex server, but i dont know how to correctly setup a network switch. if you have some reference for me, that would be great !! thanks again

I recently assembled a new pc and I have my old pc lying around. I saw the video about turning old computers into home servers, but I was wondering is it worth it? What can I use it for? I am a PhD student in physics, therefore I know very little about programming and it has always been focused on the data process of my measurements (mainly statistics and plotting). I do run some simulations and this could be for me the only reason why I might benefit from a PC running overnight. Yet since I do this very rarely I don't think it is worth having a machine running 24/7 for this reason. What are the uses of a home server? And, more importantly, how easy would it be to make it run? The specs of my old pc are: i7 6700 16 gb ddr4 Kingston HyperX Fury HX421C14FB/8 @2133MHz asus h170PRO 500gb ssd (some samsung 2.5 inches one) 3Tb hard drive (WD Red) Also what are the benefits of crushing my head into learning how to use a linux based os rather than the already installed and so well known win 10? Thanks to whoever will reply! Sorry for any typos or bad english, as this is not my native language.

I've been thinking of building my own home server (for photos, movies, and general storage), but I don't really know much about building one from an old system yet. Just saw an HP Elitedesk Gen 3 being sold for only 100USD only. (HP ProDesk also available for 60USD only) Will be posting the exact specs once the seller replies but do you think this is worth a buy for a home media server?

Hey so I have been running this on and off for a few months and I have been trying to think of solution for how I should optimally take advantage of my hardware, so I thought I would just come to the forum and ask for some advice. Down below are the questions I have as well as the build I am using for my home server. So I have a "decently" collection of hardware and I put together a home server for storing files and running small game servers. I have been running into so many network problems and wanted to just seek bettwe advice as to how I should set the machine up to do what I need it to do. Before I moved this rig to Ubuntu it was on Windows and was a Media Encoder ingest server for the videos I edited (4k - 8k footage) After I moved it to Ubuntu it was my local NAS and minecraft server (it would be running upwards of 5 minecraft servers at a time each with upwards of 4-10GB of RAM dedicated to their instances). I currently live with 4 Twitch streamers 2 of us are editors that get a ton of footage pretty much every week (more like 40+ clips equalling upwards of 8gb+) so having a way to store VODS or download folders of clips from a google drive would help immensley. Now I am in the process of just reinstalling an OS and staring from scratch, but I want some advice on how I can acomplish some if not all of these tasks on one machine. Most importantly a NAS that will be access from pretty much only Windows machines and a machine to host game servers on, mnostly Minecraft. I don't really care for a "media server" because I have no idea how to even make use of that (like store stuff on it, I know the name Plex but not actually what it is/how it works) but I do have a theatre room, running off of an Xbox Series X and the house is networked with cat5e (i'm pretty sure). I know of unRaid but I'm not really looking to spend more money on this setup but if there aren't any other alternatives out there then I'm down to buy a liscence. For those wondering about security, I know this isn't the best way to do this but I find that it works fine, but I basically have a double NAT where my main router connects to my tplink router from LAN-WAN and the tplink router is in DHCP mode and is port-forwarded on all ports (1-65535) and then on the tplink the server is port-forwarded on certain ports like SSH, MYSQL, SFTP, HTTPS, etc... I am not very much into network sercurity but this is pretty the only thing I could find (for myself I know there is other stuff out there). Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks! Hi, I'm new to NAS / Server, but I read a bit, and now I am confused. There are some Guides that say a Synology DS1520+ (or similar Devices) is good enough for a Plex Server and is capable of 4K transcoding. Other Users on Reddit or the LTT Forum say that a NAS should only be used as the storage Device and the Transcoding should be done by another PC. How would that work? Do I Connect a PC with no mass storage to a Synology DS and let it do the CPU-heavy work? So here's what I want it for: I want a Plex Server that can stream 4K Movies/Videos to at least one User (2-3 would be preferable), with enough Storage for a lot of 4K and HD Movies/Videos and other Data like Pictures and Documents that don't need a that much Storage Space. It should be expandable in the future. (Or configured in a way that lets my Swap a Drive for one with a higher capacity without losing the Data of the old Drive) I want to access it remotely from wherever I am (or my Family) to Upload of Download something. Should I buy a prebuilt NAS, or should I build it on my own? And what would you recommend? (I know that prebuilds are more user-friendly but probably more expensive, and I know how to build PC's and set them up, so that shouldn't be the problem but I don't know what's important for a Server/NAS like this)

Hey gang, my current rig has the following specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 - 2600K @ stock (the silicon has degraded and it won't hold a stable overclock anymore) RAM: 4 x 4 GB DDR3-1600 @ 1600 Mhz Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V Pro (one PCIe slot doesn't work, long story short my GTX 580 died two years ago and there was smoke, EVGA replaced it with a 1050 Ti under their lifetime warranty program, no video until I moved it to the other x16 slot) I currently have an EVGA RTX 2060 Super but when I eventually upgrade I'll probably move that to the new system. What I'm wondering is if 2600K and 16 GB of RAM are enough to start a home server. I'd probably set it up with unRAID, add some storage and set it up for the following functions to start: - Plex (I very rarely would need to transcode as the devices I watch on usually work fine with mkv's) - NAS (I'd three HDDs so there'd be a parity drive and then I have a spare 512 GB SSD that can be a cache) - Nextcloud (I've only recently heard of Nextcloud but if I can self-host an alternative to Google Photos/Amazon Photos to offload my iPhone pictures that'd be swell) Maybe eventually I'd add more stuff like a Minecraft bedrock server for my kids and their friends though that might be pushing it. Oh also, if I added a faster networking card would I have issues with unRAID given how old my mobo and chipset are? Thanks!

Need some help with home server setup.
Beskarad Gotabor posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Hardware: hp proliant dl360 g7 CPU: dual 6c RAM: 32gb HD Controller: Smart Array P410i Usage: Home Automation, Lab, File storage, and Plex I was able to get this at a great price. The only problem I have is that is came with 8x 300gb sas drives. I have 7 of the drives ina raid5 configuration which comes to around 1.5tb of storage. I am getting close to filling this up and am looking into replacing all the drives. I have done some research and the P410i controller downgrades the SAS connection from 6 to 3gb when a SATA drive is used. I am not a big hardware guy more software. If I replace the 7 drives with 1tb sata drives would I see much of a difference if they were running at 3gb? And if I get a new SAS pci controller do they downgrade as well or would they let a SATA drive run at full speed? Thanks-

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering as I am quite new to the whole concept of a home server does anyone have any suggestions for something I could use as a Plex server? I'm open to any ideas. I'm intending on using it for a max of 2-3 1080p video streams on my home network (about 350mpbs). I also have 2 Raspberry Pi 3Bs I could use. Feel free to link products although if possible please link to either the UK/EU version of the retailers website or retailers that ship internationally. Thank you!

I have been a front-end developer / UI-UX developer for approx 15 years. Over the years I have lost countless projects / designs that would be very, very valuable in my portfolio (and I am now currently looking for a new job) lost to new pc builds, discarded / lost / failed harddrives or not having a good backup policy. About four months ago I started looking into a DIY NAS build as the harddrives on my pc started to fill and the two external drives I use started showing warning signals on monitoring software. When I started I was only thinking NAS and had planned on using a RAID PCe hardware card. Between then and when I started ordering my hardware, I have decided I want a home server / lab that I can run and test my projects (web server / virtualization), file server and NAS. My hardware has either already arrived or is on it's way and I'm now concerned that my hardware my be under powered for what I want to do. The main advice I'm looking for is: What server / os and app setup do I need for my goals: NAS / RAID setup (I would like to run RAID 10) File / media sharing (Plex) Server (web server, database server, virtualization and/or container) This is my hardware: Motherboard: ASRock H370M-ITX/ac (the mobo and intel H370 chipset have built-in RAID functionality) CPU: Intel Core i3-8350K RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2400 2x16gb (32gb) non-ECC Boot Drive: WD Blue SN550 NVMe M.2 HDD's: 4 x Toshiba NAS 4TB Case: Fractal Node 304 I am currently leaning towards Ubuntu Server with a mix of VM/Docker and built in RAID functionality of Ubunto/Mobo/chipset. Your recommendations are much appreciated. I realize I may want to do too much with the hardware I have, which will mean I will either have to scale back my goals or upgrade the hardware I've already ordered.

I'm starting to put together a list for a NAS that I would like to build sometime in the future. I don't want to do anything fancy with it, just for storage expansion. I am also planning on running it (pls don't shout at me) in RAID 5. And I know some of you are going to say, "Use RAID 6, better reliability" or whatever, but I'm on a budget and want to keep things as cheap as possible and don't want to have to buy more drives. I've considered using RAID 6, but I've done some research and found out that these drives last anywhere from 3 to 5 years, and hopefully by that time, I'll upgrade and get some more drives and put it into RAID 6 (If that is possible, which I think it is). Speaking of RAID, I also need a cheap raid controller with 4 SATA ports (preferably SATA 3) and support for RAID 5. (I also don't live in the US so I would prefer it if I can buy everything off Amazon.) I want to use it for storing files for video editing, like the video files, project files, assets, etc. etc. Here's the part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Drifta_Masta/saved/YsCcbv Note: I am aware that I didn't include a rack to put the chassis in. I am planning on getting one of those later on, I first just want to get all the kinks worked out. TL;DR Want to build a NAS.
