  1. Goodmorning, I would like to create a thread for all threadripper zen2 owners just to compare the different results each of us reached. I would like to use a simple format like this: CPU TYPE: example 3960x COOLING TYPE: example ek strx40 monoblock for zenith 2 extreme + ek d5 pump + 2x360 radiators WATT ABSORBED UNDER FULL LOAD: example 400w TEMPERATURE: example 75/80 degrees Notes: - Room temperature we could say it is 25 degrees. If it is more or less extreme please specify it. - For testing please use a software to maximize your watt usage like OCCT full power test. - For watt absorbed please use hwinfo and CPU PACKAGE POWER (SMU). Thank you
  2. Hey, I know this is not the GPU section, but I assume it is not a GPU issue at all. For some strange reason my system doesn't properly recognize any GPU except one. I have change/tried almost anything possible. CPU : AMD 3960X RAM : 4x Viper Steel Series DDR4 16GB 3000MHz (Tried at stock / 3000 / 3200) Motherboard : Asus Zenith II Extreme (non Alpha) / Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Extreme (Rev. 1.0) PSU : EVGA G2 1300 gold / Corsair AX1600i titanium Case : Lian Li O11d-XL (checked also outside of the case..) Cooler : Arctic Freezer TR50 (currently, had same issues when tried a custom loop) (If relevant..) Storage : 2x Silicon Power 512GB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 (RAID0) + 2x Seagate BarraCuda 8TB GPUs tested : Asus Strix 970 / 2x Asus 2060 Turbo / Asus FE 1080ti / MSI 1080ti Armor OC No matter what I tested, my PC only recognizes and works with the GTX 970. Any other card wasn't working in Windows (error 43), and on the Asus board the GPU info in BIOS was always shown as invalid. Tried reinstalling windows, DDU, diiferent boards and PSUs, all possible BIOS settings and the default, all possible PCIE slots, Even thought that maybe there's some weird case issue that prevented the card from seating properly so I tried a vertical mount (Phanteks PH-VGPUKT_02), tried to put 1 card, 2, 3 and in all possible combinations. Nothing helped, same result all the time. The GPUs by the way work perfectly fine on another PC, so they're ok.. What could possibly cause this ? Am I dealing with a CPU issue ?
  3. I’m currently looking to start a new build with a threadripper 3960x. The motherboard I am going with is a gigabyte designer. For the RAM I’m unsure as to which I should go for: 4 x 32GB 3600 Corsair vengeance pro c18 or 4 x 16GB 3200 Corsair dominator c16 Would there be much performance difference between then? Which would you recommend getting? The system will run unraid with 2-3 windows gaming VMs,Apple VM,Plex,UniFi controller etc. Thank you for your help
  4. Here is my setup. I run modeling software and also enjoy gaming. With 1 420 and 1 360 rad (6 fans in push/pull for the rads and 13 case fans) I have lots of cooling. Because of this I am not sure if I should run PBO + 200 (R23 37000 and 1300) or 4.4 Ghz on 21 cores and 4.5 on 3 cores at 1.35 volts. (R23 38300 and 1275) Port Royal at 11550 for both ish. What does everyone think? I save for power with PBO + 200 at normal use. Any guys with 3960x's what are your overclocks looking like? Hardware: Corsair 1000D Zenith II Extreme Alpha Threadripper 3960x @ 4.4 All core 4.5 3 core @ 1.35 volts OR PBO 10X (600w 400A 600A) + 200 all core usually 4.3 in heavy workloads and single core (3 cores) 4.566 Ghz ~ 250 - 300 watts Red Devil 6900xt ultimate @ 2700 GHZ at 1141mV and 400 total non transient watts 64 GB Ballistix 4x16 GB Micron B die 3600 CL 16 @ 3733 CL15 1T (1:1 W/ Fabric) Could not go higher on 1:1 with Infinity Fabric so all timings are very tight instead. 5. I have posted here before asking if my 3950x will be cooled by a H150i, and the response was yes. But now a semi-close friend of mine is planning a build with a 3960x(I cannot wait to see it!) and a 2080 super, with an H150i CPU cooler. Is this enough? I want to know so that when he builds it he isn't always throttling.
  6. Hi guys, looking for a good cooler for the Ryzen 3960X/3970X. I like the look of the Corsair H100i RGB PLATINUM but worry that it won't quite cool the CPU enough - is that the case, or will it work fine? I won't be doing any overclocking and don't run any long CPU intensive tasks like rendering. If that's not a good match, could someone recommend something? I'd prefer a white cooler but I know that's not always possible.
  7. I recently got a 3960X and be quiet dark rock pro 3 on an Asus rampage iv from my cousin who upgraded. I am new to overclocking and need to know what to do. Do I just change the multiplier and leave it if it's stable or do I have to fiddle around with voltages and that sort of stuff. Thanks
  8. So I've been rocking on my i7 3820 from the summer of 2012 (my god, has it been 4.5 years?). I chose the X79 platform for my first build, because I thought it would bring the best performance (quad channel memory and all the pcie lines ). Well it's certainly been very solid, but if I knew what I know now, I would probably have just gone with a mainstream system and saved some bucks. Back then the new Sandy Bridge Extreme edition 6 core chips were pretty expensive, so I settled for the 3820. I have done few "suicide runs" at 4.9 GHz, but for the 24/7 use the 3820 has been running cool and happy at 4,3 GHz (~1.29 V). It's still a very good chip, as there haven't really been any significant ipc gains since Sandy Bridge... So I thought heck, instead of building a totally new expensive system for some unimportant performance gains, I'll just update my partially locked (could be oc'ed past 4.3 GHz, but it was still kinda a pain in the ass) 4 core to an unlocked 6 core. Not really an upgrade that would bring everyday desktop performance to the next level (I think such doesn't exist atm...), but something nice for a couple of heavier workloads (okay, it's just for fun ). These days even the highest end SB-E parts can be found second hand for relatively cheap (at least when you compare to what they were going for even few years ago). I thought I'd check what I could find on ebay, and in the end I ended up winning some random auction on an i7 3970X of all things This cpu was stupidly expensive in 2012, but now It's possible to obtain it for a fraction of the original price. I would have been good with either 3930K or 3960X, but the 3970X is what I ended up with (the bragging rights... a little too late though ). Btw, if you are curious what the H100 AIO cooler pre applied tim looks after 4.5 years, here: Well I guess it looks just normal, and it's been good for all this time. Also, I've been wondering how long the H100 will still keep going until either the liquid has evaporated too much or the pump breaks... Anyway, while I was cleaning the parts with an old "credit card", I noticed the i7 3970X I got had a tiny bump around the edge of the hole in the heat spreader. I carefully chambered it away (lol), but I was surprised it was there. As a side note, looks like acetone can clean the markings off of the socket's cpu retention plate, along with any grease on the cpu So got the new cpu installed, booted successfully in the bios, i7 3970X recognized in the bios, yay! Tried to boot a couple of times in the windows: bsod "machine check exception" After heavily underclocking I made it into windows. I decided to reseat the cpu just in case. In the process I noticed I should have put a little more tim than just a "rice", so I put a healthy X. Eventually I got the cpu running fine, after tinkering with the settings in the bios. In the end it seemed to boil down to the fact that this 3970X just plain old required more vcore to run than what I was expecting. After adding some more juice it runs and overclocks quite nicely. The problem is that my H100 with push/pull can't keep up with this thing running at 4,8 GHz on 6 cores. First of all, the cores will hit 91 C in high stress test (throttling). And second, there is secondary kind of heavier throttling even if the cores are under 91 C, but high load is sustained for longer periods of time. After changing all power/current settings to max in bios, I thought it might be due to the motherboard VRMs overheating. So, I changed the rear fan from exhaust to intake and ghetto mounted it in an angle to blow on to the socket area: It might have improved things a bit, but the throttling still persisted. I noticed it starts to happen soon when the "cpu" temp gets around 67 C, so I guess it's the cpu throttling after all when it hits the Tcase limit of 66.8 C. So for now I'll settle for 4.6 GHz (+0.05 V offset mode gives ~1.37 V max, seems pretty stable so far). I guess I might ditch the H100 and add the cpu in the custom loop and also get an additional radiator. It would also improve the noise levels somewhat, but if I do that I guess it would be time to upgrade the case to something nicer as well, unless I do some (more) ridiculous mods You might think this is kind of pointless (which it kind of is), but I thought it might be interesting to actually try a cpu (only) upgrade which brings 1.5x performance increase (+ some from higher oc) in multi threaded scenarios. So far I'm happy with the results and I think it's still probably going to be good for years to come (I'm going to test out how long can I keep on going with this system, until I feel like I really need more performance)
  9. READ CAREFULLY What would you choose? Intel Core I7 3960X [6C / 12T | @4.5 Ghz] ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Corsair Vengeance 32GB [DDR3 @1600Mhz] Or AMD RyZen 5 1600X [6C / 12T | @4 Ghz] Gigabyte GA-A320M-S2H Ballistix Sport LT 8GB [DDR4 @2400Mhz] Mostly for gaming and video editing PLEASE DONT RECOMMEND ME ANOTHER BUILD OR SOMETHING, I ONLY WANT TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU WOULD CHOOSE
  10. exactly as the title says, were there any TR units that were actually available to buy? all i've seen were pre orders. i was on newegg the moment they launched and all i saw was a pre order button. i have pre-orders in 3 different places. i have looked on message boards and discords far and wide, and have yet to find a single person who got a unit or who's unit were shipped. microcenters didn't get any threadrippers, B&H did not either. i don't know about amazon or newegg. any ideas?
  11. Hi everyone I am currently on an i7-4770 based build and I have been steadily pushing my system to the max these days especially given the age. I have an i7-2600 based old machine still around, and the last one year I have been using this one also as a secondary build machine to give me some headroom but my workflows have become complex for my needs managing two machines. Hence considering a new build and I am looking at Ryzen 3rd gen Threadripper, specifically one of 3960X vs 3970X. I am planning to purchase the parts over the next 3-4 months slowly based on deals that show up. I am going to be using air cooling (NH-U14S TR4 SP3) for my build. I am primarily looking to make an informed decision between 3960X vs 3970X for my use case (described below). 3970X has more cores/threads but a slightly lower base clock. I am trying to better understand if 3960X allows me to push the CPU much closer to its max as opposed to 3970X, before I get capped by the CPU/cooling TDP limits? Or is it the other way around. where 3970X is more efficient in allowing more parallelization for the same CPU/cooling TDP limits, thoughts? Basically, I don't want to get a 3970X if I am going to get the same CPU performance as I would have with the 3960X because of the Thermal limits, and this is where I would like inputs primarily. I also understand cooling is going to make a whole lot of difference. I researched cooling options, and I prefer sticking with air cooling approach that I am more comfortable with. AIOs would be acceptable, but I have found none that has a large enough baseplate that provides 3rd gen Threadripper coverage and have proven to be be reliable. Just to give an overview of my current workloads and future extensions: - My workstation is turned on and running 24x7, and running primarily Debian Linux. - It is my primary machine for code development and has development/continuous-integration builds running a good portion of the time (4-6 hours a day minimum). A lot of these are clean builds, and hence the time to finish turns out to be CPU and parallelism dependent. - A few different docker containers running for development, testing, CI, etc. and a few Virtual machines as well for deployment. A few times a month, I also use Windows on VM to run few programs that I can run only on Windows. - A decent amount of IO, but I am already using a NVMe SSD which I will be carrying over to this new build. The numbers I have pulled so far seems to indicate that I am not bottlenecked on the IO with the SSD. - I also use 4 hard drives in mdadm RAID-6 for cold storage. Again not bottlenecked on IO here as well so far since most of the heavily used data remains on the SSD, with only backup/long-term storage moving to this cold storage and also less frequently compared to the reads from the SSD. However I plan to be vastly (4 - 8x) scaling/expanding my development scenarios, and based on the calculations I did, I am most likely to start hitting bottlenecks here. This is where I am thinking that the TRX40 platform and available PCIe lanes might help. I might throw in one or two 4xM.2 PCIe adapter cards to add more NVMe storage. If that is overkill, I might take the route of adding few SATA SSDs to keep the costs down and extend my runway instead. - No gaming per-se on this machine, however I do need three 4k outputs. I already have a Radeon Pro WX 2100 GPU (comparable to an RX550) that is very much up to this task today and is quite energy efficient (Max TDP of 35W). - I also run Plex on the same server that streams/transcodes 4k content a few hours each day within my local home network while running the above workloads. - I am also planning to throw in additional new workloads like 4k/8k video editing (while my PC is handling few CI runs) for some of my hobby projects, but not currently. This is also one of the other reasons I am looking at high core count CPUs. - I also tend to keep these machines for 7-10 years, before going for the next upgrade. Thanks for the help.
  12. I just recently finished my first ever water cooling build, previously only built air cooled/overclocked machines. As I'm in the VFX industry and wanting a new home workstation I went with the Threadripper 3960x, and apart from the strange, magical, and frustrating world of water cooling it has been an easy build. However, initially straight out of the BIOS gate I noticed that in Ryzen Master as well as HWiNFO64 that my vCore / peak core voltages were seemingly way high. I have since set the vCore to be 1.25 volts in BIOS which made it show up in CPU-Z and the ASRock A-Tuning software as 1.248v, however, the others still show really much higher vCores. I'm wondering what the heck is going on, and also still trying to wrap myself around dealing with PBO and overclocking with this new chip as I've been out of practice as my old computer was 7 year old i7-3370k oc'ed. Here's a screen capture as well as some finished build shots. Thanks in advance.
  13. Hi everyone, I am going to build a new pc for work/gaming, I made some research and I chose the following part any tips or suggestion CPU: AMD Threadripper 3960x MB: Asus Zenith II Extreme GPU: Asus RTX 2080 TI ROG STRIX A11G Ram: Corsair DDR4 Dominator Platinum RGB 8x8GB 3600 SSD: Corsair Force MP600 1TB M.2 SSD x2 (Raid 0) Cooling: Asus ROG RYUJIN 360 Cooling: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Case: Asus ROG Strix Helios GX601 PSU: Asus ROG-THOR-1200P Thanks in advance for the tips
  14. I've recently gotten my hands on a great deal for the i7 3690x (a steal, really) and I'm thinking of building a PC around it. I'm gonna have to get a X79 motherboard for that LGA 2011 socket, looking at Asus Rampage IV Extreme/Black for now. Do you guys think its a good investment? My main concern is, is it worth it to buy top-end PC parts that are released years ago but MAY have inferior performance (and durability) compared to the ones released today. Should I just get something like a 4790K, 5820K or even one of the Skylakes? Or settle for the 3960X and overclock it? I will run multi-GPU in the future. If the performance is about the same, I'd go for the 3960x, since you get more cores? ADVISE ME Thanks a ton.
  15. I'm trying to figure out what cpu to get. I'm buying used and I've found an r9 290 for 200$ cad. I would like to know what cpu would be a good match. I've found some good deals for fx 6300 100$ and fx 8350 with msi 970 mobo 150$. I'm considering an Intel but since recently with games like far cry 4 requiring a quad core I'm not sure about it.
  16. AMD's new 5Ghz claim to fame the FX 9590 turned out to be surprisingly efficient, consuming 100W less power than intel's overclocked 6 core extreme edition 3960X while providing the same gaming performance. [imghttp://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/max-payne-3.png
  17. Hi There, As a student, you can expect money is reasonably tight. I'm looking to improve my rig. I think my best bet is to go for some used hardware, and on eBay I've found the 3960X and the 6600K as my possible options, they will both cost around the same. If I went with the older i7, the IPC count would be lower and compared to the i5 in gaming, it wouldn't fare as good. However, I also plan to do a bit of video editing and tasks alike. As it can be overclocked (I see people getting it to around 4.5GHz), I'm sure that it won't be a bad experience. In addition to the higher core count and cache size, I hope this should suffice for the next couple of years while I wait for the used market in the Z1/270 area to expand. I could go for the 6600K, which gives me the option for expansion to other chips using the LGA 1151 socket, combined with the higher core clock speeds and IPC count, this would be a viable option but due to my budget restrictions, I want to get the most performance out of as little price as possible. Basically, I'm just asking for options as I don't really know what to go for. TL;DR - Should I get the 3960X or 6600K? Need the best price to performance due to budget. Thanks, Sam
