Are sound cards worth the money and the space in your computer case? And can you really tell the difference in the audio quality if you have one or if you don't?
-
The sound on my gaming laptop went out. Tech support says to update bios (as my pc is out of warranty) I don't want to risk killing my motherboard they even gave me the part number THTXT(I thought this was the part number for the sound card turns out it's the motherboard). I've also been told external sound cards won't help me short of replacing the motherboard is there anything I can do to get sound back?

Hello! I have a little problem: At work I have a PS4 Pro, a Z5500 from Logitech and a Creative Labs Sound Blaster external sound card! I plug those 3 jacks from my Z5500 into the sound card, then I plug the usb (mini USB - USB) cable from the sound card (mini USB) to the PS4 Pro (USB) header. Everything works, no problem! Now, I moved the Z5500 further away from the PS4 Pro and is the only way I can leave them in that space. I bought an USB cable extension (2.0) 4.5 m long. I know that USB 2.0 maximum length (to use without problems) is 5 m. The sound card doesn't turn on with that extension. My guess is that beeing that long and the sound card itself gets power through that USB maybe that's the real problem, idk. I really appreciate you're time! Give me a solution to his besides an USB repeater or idk. Thanks alot. And sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker!

Hi folks, I've installed a new ASUS Sound Card Essence STX II and of the 3 possible sound outputs (analog, headphone, S/PDIF), only the S/PDIF works and while ONLY connected to an external DAC (Audioengine D1 24-Bit DAC), which defeats the purpose of this soundcard. I bought this soundcard to drive my Sennheiser HD800s (300 ohms). I've disabled the on-board audio through the BIOS, uninstalled the on-board audio drivers as well as not installing the NVidia audio drivers. I have the newest drivers from ASUS. When I switch from Analog Out source (headphone, 2 speakers, FP headphone, FP 2 speakers), I hear a distinctive "click" in my case. I'm going to assume it's the sound card clicking because the clicking goes away when I remove the sound card. The PC isn't crashing or giving me any errors. I only have 2 Playback sources listed: Speakers & S/PDIF Pass-through Device, of which, Speakers is set to default. I've reached out to Asus support but haven't had a response other than they're working on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello, I am building a new pc and the last choice is my motherboard, all my other components are compatible with both motherboards mentioned. After some research the main difference between both are *in favour of Gigabyte board* 1) More usb ports on gigabyte (for which I couldn't care less) 2) Design (closed case w/o side panek soo) 3) better audio quality ; this is where I consider buying the cheaper MSI and a asus xonar dgx for 30€ I really don't know if a cheap soundcard is worth it, I do listen to a lot of music on good speakers and really good headphones, until now I've been using dac and amp but I can't use them for both my laptop and pc. Thanks in advance Ossi

Hi folks, Hopefully someone can help with this. I've installed the ASUS Sound Card Essence STX II which I bought to drive my Sennheiser HD800s (300Ω). When plugged into the headphone jack, the sound is distorted and very low. Through the Asus Audio Center, I've ensured the gain is set to 300Ω. None of the other settings have helped. The PC isn't crashing or giving me any errors. I've disabled the on-board audio through the BIOS, uninstalled the on-board audio drivers and did not install the NVidia audio drivers. When checking the default sound, I only have 2 playback sources listed: Speakers (ASUS Essence STX II Audio Device) & S/PDIF Pass-through Device (ASUS Essence STX II Audio Device), of which, Speakers is set to default. The S/PDIF works when connected to an external DAC (Audioengine D1 24-Bit DAC), but that defeats the purpose of this soundcard. I've reached out to Asus support but haven't had a response other than they're working on it. It’s going on 3 weeks now with them and getting a little antsy to get this sorted out before I start thinking of returning the card. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking for a sound card for my 7.1 system as the my X-Fi Xtreme Music started to occasionally produce artefact sounds the cards I considered are listed below I really want a creative card but all of them are old, designed in 2008, the currently sold Audigy RX is even a downgrade from the X-Fi Titanium series and you can only get those refurbished or used, So seeking to find out if I can switch to an ASUS cards things to consider: the specs of hardware for both asus and Creative are top notch EAX is only used in some legacy games so creative has no edge here, as ASUS also has it's GX 3.0 emulation (it's almost on par with creatives DPS chip and alchemy) thou I don't know if the new ASUS cards listed below support it CMSS-3D vs upmix I only used creatives option witch works perfectly, actually this was the reason I decided to get a discrete card as the integrated realtek chip or software on my asus motherboard produced sound artefact when upmixig Drivers, the sound drivers for ASUS are awful https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?93764-How-is-Asus-new-soundcard-the-AE-Sonic-Studio Sp the irony is that the best 5.1/7.1 card is the 2008 Creative X-Fi Titanium line, Titanium 16 MB RAM Titanium Professional Audio PCI Express Asia-only variant of X-Fi Titanium with minijack-to-2RCA cable and EMI shield 16 MB RAM Titanium Fatal1ty Professional Essentially a Titanium Fatal1ty Champion card without the I/O drive box. 64 MB RAM Titanium Fatal1ty Champion UAA support and TOSLINK in/out added. 64 MB RAM Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Blaster_X-Fi Asus cards I considered: Asus Xonar AE 7.1 ASUS Strix RAID Pro 7.1 ASUS ROG Xonar Phoebus 7.1 I think this is what Linus should have mentioned in his video, as stereo setups have a lot of choices these days

Sorry for my inexperience in this area. I am going to try include as much detail as possible while making it to the point. Background: Until now, I was using laptops for everything including gaming. However, my gaming laptop is 2 years old and therefore I decided this time to build my own desktop computer; I am thinking of building a mini itx one, therefore the space for my PCIe slots is limited on the motherboard/case; The way I use Tiamat 7.1 v2 now with my laptop is through the external sound card from Sweex which supports surround sound (see below in "More Info"). Question: In order to have surround sound in this headset while playing games on the new desktop I am trying to build do I need a sound card (assuming I am not using an external one) (which means that I will need to look for 2 PCIe slots on motherboard and case)? And would sound card on the motherboard (price doesn't matter) improve the sound in comparison to the external one for this headset (ultimately I am asking which one is better for the purpose of gaming, and if they are the same then I won't need to look for mini ITX motherboards with 2 PCli, ...) (I believe I can also plug them in my motherboard directly as it has the plugs, but I would imagine a dedicated sound card would make the experience much better). (I looked on the internet if I need the sound card for a headset with 7.1 surround sound but all the results (discussions) I found related to people having USB connected headsets that provided surround sound artificially through software and didn't have the front, back, center, surround plugs that I have, therefore they didn't need a soundcard) Thank you very much! I appreciate you taking time to read this message and of course to reply in case, you can help. P.S. If there is a post addressing any of my questions (as the search didn't find anything relevant; and I might have missed it), feel free to post a link. More Info: The external sound card I have been using: Sweex External sound card: http://www.sweex.com/computer/audio/sound-card-usb-71-550512283 The motherboard I wanted to buy until I realized I might need a sound card (will be waiting for your response to know if I will buy it): https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-Z370-I-GAMING/

I am running the latest version of Windows 10 Home 64-bit. I bought a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Rx sound card and installed it in my system, following the provided instructions. They said to uninstall any existing audio drivers for the on-board chip-set so I did just that. I had to disable the on-board audio in my BIOS then uninstall the Realtek driver to keep Windows from automatically reinstalling it, even after turning off every auto driver installation option I could find. When I install the latest official drivers from the product website, I don't have an optical drive handy to use the included disk but I assume these should work fine if not better, it finishes successfully. However, when I try to open the Sound Blaster Audigy Rx Control Panel, I get an error saying "Unable to find Audio device." I checked the device manager and the Creative Audigy Audio Processor is showing an error saying "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. (Code 39)" I have tried every tutorial I could find online and nothing works. I am close to just completely reinstalling Windows 10 and trying that. If that doesn't work then I might even buy Windows 8.1 and downgrade because I've had nothing but problems with 10 and every update just breaks something.

Hello, I want to buy a microphone. But some technical details concerning microphones and sound cards are not to clear for me. 1. It is very often mentioned that the USB microphones have a number of benefits. If I understand good the embedded microphone sound card should have better parameters than the sound card on my PC motherboard (MSI B150 GAMING M3)? 2. Should I consider other parametres? 3. How to detect the parameters of the sound card on my motherboard(MSI B150 GAMING M3)? 4. I also do not understand why it is sometimes recommended to use (clip-on, without USB (for example Aperture A.lav)) a microphone with a smartphone? 5. What parameters (whether built-in or external cards) are sufficient for recording a spoken word without lot of post procesing? Thanks for help.

To start off, I don't know much about sound cards. I primarily use my Logitech g399 for gaming it has 7.1 surround sound and is normally plugged in via sub, but can be plugged in with a 3.5mm Jack. I'm trying to see if I can get better (possibly louder) sound for both games and music. I'm currently looking to get https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Blaster-Audigy-Performance-Headphone/dp/B00EO6X7PG?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAINYWQL7SPW7D7JCA&tag=aboutcom02lifewire-20&linkCode=sp1&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00EO6X7PG&ascsubtag=833111|google.com|||41%2C34%2C9%2C47%2C51%2C27%2C50%2C33|1| so I can keep the 7.1 surround sound for fps games. Would this be a worthwhile purchase? I'm thinking about getting speakers down the road as well. Would these improve them as well. Also if anyone else has any suggestions that are in the sub $100 (maybe a little over) price range let me know. Thanks guys! I appreciate any responses.

I was wondering how would I connect a usb Speaker 2.0 to a external sound card without a usb port?

I'm trying to find a way to use command line arguments to switch from the headphone port to the front speakers on my Xonar AE card. The reason being is that I'd like to assign a macro key to switch my audio out from my headphones to my speakers without opening the Sonic Studio software for ASUS sound cards. Right now I'm using "nircmd" to switch between the two, but this requires that the devices be plugged into different sound cards in order for them to show up in the Windows audio manager. The issue with the ASUS one is that one won't appear as plugged in until it is switched in the ASUS software first. Images are for reference. I have both the speakers and headphones plugged into the sound card but I cannot figure out how to swap between them without entering the ASUS software.

I have a cisno BM-800, it's a condenser microphone with a 2.5mm output. It's really quite so I have to boost it really high and it ends up being really fuzzy. My friend says I need an external sound card. Should I get a preamp, sound card or what? Any suggestion would help.

Hello I'm going to buy the hd598sr (mainly for gaming purposes) and really need an external dac amp combo for it. I'm going to be using it for my laptop (lenovo y500) which doesn't have a good mobo and so I was thinking of getting maybe the fiio e10k (haven't done much research) to get the full use out of these. The cheaper the better as always and I would like the best experience I could get for gaming out of these. What would you suggest? Thanks

hi, i recently bought myself Sennheiser HD6's, which i want to get full potential of sound out of. i am at my computer all day everyday as a designer of many trades, so i listen to heaps of music while I'm doing my work. i currently only have the onboard audio of Realtek 6.0.1.8142, which i know isn't going to do my headphones any justice. so i am wondering, internal or external amp. i have a Dell XPS 15 desktop running the i7-7700 and GTX 1070 with very few PCI-e lanes being mainly x4 and x1 (which is a pain as i was hoping to add another graphics card while still maintaining a warranty over the whole PC while i burn it to the ground.) any ideas on the best way to get the most out of my headphones while keeping the cost to hopefully a minimum. thanks

Hello, So I recently bought myself a new external usb sound card (Sound blasterX G1), as the internal sound card in my laptop is pretty much crap. The card works fine, but the problem is that there is really a lot of constant static background noise all the time (which increases when I turn up my volume). I've already installed the latest drivers from their website and tried different usb ports and connected different headphones, but nothing changed. It's really a shame that this happens as the sound card was not that cheap either. Anyone here who might be able to help me? Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi, so first of all I didnt know which forum to post this on so I picked General Discussion (sry about that). I want to buy a sound card and I want to know if there is enough space in the motherboard, I wont fall into details about which sound card will be because if I cant even fit a thin one then theres no point, the gap is really thin. As you can see in the pictures, I have a ASUS h81m-a and a msi 1070 which is kinda big and it already covers one of my pci-e connectors. So if you can tell (Im not really sure if those pics will show enough), can you give me some advice? Thanks.

I recently borrowed my friend's Blue Snowball to record a musical piece that I had created on my keyboard. Since my keyboard is situated in a different room than my Desktop PC (which is a Lenovo AiO BTW) I had to use my dad's laptop to record. After I recorded, I noticed a fair amount of background noise/disturbance in the recording, and conveniently relegated the problem to the probable inadequacy of the mic which did come as a shock to me given the high praise the Snowball has received from critics - until I recorded a vocal piece on my Lenovo AiO. The audio here was MUCH clearer than on the laptop, for a reason I haven't been able to figure out yet. I used two laptops to record - a Lenovo Thinkpad X240 and a Lenovo Flex 10 (neither of which are great for what I intend to do with them) and the sound quality was similar - bad, unlike the AiO. All three of the aforementioned PCs do not have an external/dedicated sound card or a dedicated Audio Interface, so it's straight thru the USB port, and the default Voice Recorder app provided by Windows 10. The Sound Card is integrated hence, and is the Realtek stuff on all of them. Room was silent, with the doors closed and a pretty conducive environment. Could anyone please suggest why something like this would be happening? Why is there a difference in the sound quality between devices? What can I do to mitigate it (preferably without spending money, because I'm a newbie to this world, and still finding my footing, and in a country like India where all tech is super expensive, the return on investment would surely be appalling for me) And also, can you suggest a way to improve my overall recording quality again without the bells and whistles of overcomplication and money, because I will soon be getting a Blue Yeti ( <3 ) for myself and wish to be absolutely ready to handle that beauty Thanks a lot Help would be much appreciated. PS. I'm a noob at this so don't call me stupid for doing whatever I have done that you may find unprofessional

Hi all, I'm currently debating on buying the K702's. I know they need a power source but I'm not too familiar with requirements. Currently my Motherboard is an Asus Strix B350-F. Would that be enough to power up my K702's or should I get a sound and if so, what would you guys recommend? Thanks.

So I upgraded my system with an audio card, and it work good most of the time, but i am getting an issue with my speakers bugging out. sporadically, my speakers will change where sound is coming from. The assignment is random, aside that the sub tends to be one of the rear speakers. Changing my default output in the control panel and switching back fixes the problem, but it tends to happen again between 5-30 minutes later. This is also an issue with chrome when on Youtube, but the temporary fix still works. I am using Soundblaster connect 2. I have disabled realteck from starting up as I don't use it at all now. If anything else is needed just ask and I'll put it up. OS: Windows 10 x64 Audio Card: Creative Sound blaster AE-5 Games affected: Guild wars 2, Stellaris, Endless space, ARMA: cold war assult, EU IV, Planetbase, Games that have not bugged: Guild Wars, (with direct acceleration), Bladestorm, Metro 2030, Tom Clancy Wild lands. Who else is having this issue, and does anyone know of a fix?
