Hi, relatively new to the forum as a whole, haven't been here much. I'm looking to acquire a 2-3U rackmount server with ideally 10-12 3.5" bays and at least enough space for a two slot PCIe-3.0 x16 lane for a GPU. I love in the EU and not managing to find a lot of good value options. Any recommendations? Thanks

I have a 55GB file that i want to upload to a server where i can give people the link and then them be able to download it. My budget is around £15/$20 a month. I would prefer a 1Gbps port but 100Mbps is fine. I'd imagine i will be using about 10TB of transfer a month maybe less so either a unmetered or high bandwidth connection is best. What would be the best way for me to do this? Would it be just storing it on a service such as Google drive and paying for a bigger drive space? I plan to upload other large files in the future so 200GB+ of space will be required sooner rather than later. Or would the other best way to be to buy a cheap dedicated server or vps? Any recommendations and thanks for your help. Luke.

Budget (including currency): £400 Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Music streaming, some occasional 4k streaming, photo storage. Looking for suggestions on a setup for my use-case Beginner DIY NAS for music playback (e.g. Roon) and some photo/video storage My desire is to have a NAS that’s between 4-16TB in size, including backup/clone drives. I only have about 500GB of music, but it’s constantly growing and I feel it’s time to take the jump into this. My interest in NAS’ are for their use as huge storage systems as well as the ability to stream content from them. For streaming music, I like the sound of using Roon for this. I probably wouldn’t use the NAS much for watching video content, but this may be something I would be interested in doing further down the line. I do also have a growing family photo collection that I’d store on the NAS. Growing from 0GB, as I’ve only just begun the mountainous task of digitizing old prints we had in the loft. Really, my priority is having a setup that a) has sufficient storage and backup storage and b) performs well enough that I could stream my music library very quickly, with WiFi or data speeds being the only discernable bottleneck. I’m not really sure which component/s in a NAS setup would be the most important for this use-case (e.g. CPU, RAM, SSD etc). Ideally I’d like to spend under £300 for the whole setup, but can go over this if needed. If I need to start with a smaller amount of storage (e.g. 2TB storage and 2TB clone/backup) in order to meet my performance requirements (i.e. a more powerful CPU/RAM if needed), I am fine with this. Suggestions on builds would be massively appreciated! And if you aren’t able to/don’t have the time to suggest a full parts list, guidance on how to shop for different components, and which components I should prioritise, would be awesome. Thanks!

My cousin found a Dell R410 Power Edge in the trash (University dumpster dive). He gave it to me because I like to tinker. I got it working and it worked great with the original drives, but I want to use larger 4TB SAS drives, in four bays, for total of 16TB. Unfortunately, the Dell Raid set up only sees each drive as 2TB. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

I've been thinking of doing this for a long while, and it never really came to be for one reason or another. So i finally decided that i should just start the build, and slowly work out how to actually do it. Or i might never do it at all. So what is the build then? I want to move my current 1U watercooled server (plot device in my signature) in to the chassis of an old HP DL380 G8. And maybe do some upgrades in the process! Why? A few reasons: - move from proprietary formfactor to standard ATX, so easy future upgrades - more cooling potential, and thus i can fit more hardware - the HP server looks absolutely fantastic! The plan. Ah yes, well i don't actually have a plan yet. But i've modded a few servers before and i feel like a 2U build is going to be a lot easier to pull off than the 1U build i'm already running. Globally here is the to do list then: - gut the old server - think of some way to get a normal ATX board mounted - get some stuff 3D printed - custom paintjob? - mount the hardware in the chassis - watercool everything! progress so far is not too much, but i already have the donor machine gutted and ready to go: That's about it for now. guess this was more of a ramble than anything, but at least i can get this project underway. Expect updates whenever

synology nas 3 question about SYNOLOGY NAS
Rocketmonkey posted a topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Guys i just have 3 question about Synology NAS. How's the security? Is it suitable for sme? Can i use it as a cloud? i mean can i access it outside of my office? If it's possible, should I use synology NAS, or is it better to use cloud services like OneDrive?"- 1 reply

I have a home server build I'm working on, and I considered any idea to combine a dedicated VR PC and my server into one. I currently use a laptop as my main computer, but it's not the strongest with an RTX 3050 Ti and I have no other computers. I don't really want to build both a PC and a home server so I had an idea and I'd like to get opinions and concerns or potential issues I might have. On my gigabit network, I plan to build this machine: i5 12600k 32GBs of RAM 1tb boot SSD RTX 3060 or 3070. My plan is to install proxmox. I will be running a minecraft server for some friends of mine and will be dedicating 2 cores and 8gbs of RAM to it. I also plan to run a VPN and will dedicate 2cores to it (only like 3 concurrent clients) and lastly. I plan to dedicated 4 cores, 16gbs of RAM and the dgpu to a windows VM. With the idea being I will use that VM for my VR PC... Good idea? Bad idea? Should I upgrade the CPU? Am I stupid?

Hello, I want to build a homelab, but it can only consume 40W. It must be a tower server and it must have at least 6 SATA ports and 2 PCIe ports. I host docker (vaultwarden, pihole, reverse proxy, openvpn, duckdns), some websites, TrueNAS and game servers (Minecraft & GTA5). It can consume more than 40W but only when loaded, like when I start a game server. But I want it to consume no more than 40W while there is only Docker, TrueNAS and some sites Web that works. I have a budget of €1500 (~$1600). What do you recommend to me?

Hey everyone. Got a question for you. I just build a home server that's got 40TB of RAID storage I am planning to use for a backup server for my workstation. Right now that server is just running Windows 10 Pro, since most of my home environment is Windows-based. The Motherboard is an old Asus Z87-A, 4790 CPU, and 16GB of ram with a 980Ti The issue I sorta have is that when I went to make the RAID 5 array with the onboard Intel Raid controller, while I understand it's stripe + parity, I am not seeing the full 40TB of the drives, which I understand why, but I wanted to know what better OS could I use for this home server that has better RAID support, maybe ZFS support, for this box. The reason the 980 Ti is in there was a I wanted to have the box serve is a potential streaming server too so it needs to support NVENC. My original idea was I was going to use ProxMox for virtual something like TrueNas/FreeNas to manage the drives, and then virtualize a Windows 10 machine with GPU passthrough, but GPU passthrough is ONLY supported for 4th GEN PCIe which this Asus board obviously doesn't have. Any suggestions of operating system that will allow me to get best of both worlds in one? Also, I REALLY DO NOT want to use Docker, hate it with a fiery passion as I had to use it in a government server testing lab and hated it! Thanks in advanced!

Hey LTT forum. Im looking to do a NAS setup for file storage, however as of now i do not really know the specs i need for stuff like trueNAS and other systems, dumpster diving google gave few results. All i know is that i gotta have around 40TB usable space (spinner drives) and 2-4TB SSD, it should use as little power as possible, because it will run 24/7. The case i have for it on hand is a Inter-Tech IPC 4U-40240 Rack. My experience is in software and consumer hardware. Kind regards Bau

Currently I have an old Dell set up with linux as a server, but I've had quite a few headaches with permissions that I think I set up incorrectly and the ability to add additional drives. I'll have the basic specs at the bottom of the post. Overall, I think I need to restart everything to make scaling easier as we add more drives and as our needs change. Currently, we are storing family photos, a single TV show, and rom and iso backups of our NES-Wii, Gameboy-3ds, and ps2 games. We're likely to start ripping our DVD and Blu Ray movies, and potentially add ps3, Wii U, and switch backups as well. We'd probably set up Plex or Jellyfin on it, with at most 2 users now but we'd probably max out at 4 long-term. My main questions are the following: 1. I think I could upgrade to a i7 4790, but we'd want a new case that has more drive bays, and I'd have to look into if the motherboard and PSU in our current system is a standard ATX layout. If they are, would that CPU be sufficient for our needs? If not, would it be best to build a whole new machine/buy a synology system? 2. We may want to set up raid 1, is it possible to have a raid setup for one pair of drives and have additional drives running without raid on the same system? Some of our larger files like our Wii U/PS3 games wouldn't be as important because I could always rip them again, but our photos are something that we have no way of replacing. Is this even worth the hassle, or would we want to use raid 1 configurations on all of our drives to make things more simple? 3. Linus talks about having redundancy (hence raid), as well as off-site backups. What's the best way to handle off-site backups? I'm assuming dropbox or similar subscription services would get extremely pricey over time depending on how much space you need. 4. Is there any website that you can enter all of your movies into and get an estimate of how much storage space you need? Currently we have a good idea of how much space our games and photos take/how much we might need, but this could help us get a good idea of how much storage we'd need to start out with. Thanks in advance for any help! CPU: i3 4160 (2 cores, 4 threads) RAM: 8GB ddr3 GPU: R7 240

Hello!! I'm looking to host a minecraft server for a few friends of mine. I'm curious if there is an option for deploying one on my Ubuntu server in a docker container and be able to make changes to the Minecraft server through a web gui. That way I can grant access to my less technically apt friends for them to add mods or adjust world settings. Are there any viable options for me? If for some reason I need to run it on a physically separate server in order to do so that's fine as well. Thank you for your time!

Hi everyone. I'm sorry for asking what is likely to be a very common question, but I've looked through a bunch of threads and couldn't get it to work, so I'm here asking for someone to basically hold my hand through the process I've set up a home server. Got TrueNAS Scale on it (Core did not support my RAID card). Local access is working fine. Now - I'm looking for a solution that does not involve a VPN. I'm looking to mount the storage pool directly to some machines that are all away from where the server is situated. This is a storage vault for non mission critical data, but we'd like regular access to it, as it's where we want to place off-jobsite backups as we are regularly on the road and want to get to the end of the day, do a local backup, then upload it all to the vault. I understand two ways of doing this would be by SMB sharing, WebDAV, or (s)FTP. As long as it works, I have no preference. I would like it to be accessible also through my browser, in case we want to send something in a pinch to a client, but this isn't something I'd necessarily need - can use Drive or Dropbox. Mounting the storage pool directly to the remote machines would be the most necessary part. In the past we used prebuilt NAS and we had an office so it was relatively more simple, as for remote access we could just use the WD or Synology apps. But I'm clearly failing at some point in the process between setting up the share configuration and port forwarding, as every time I've tried to check the port externally I've gotten back that it's not pointing to the correct place. As much as it pains me to say this, security is somewhat secondary, so I'm willing to compromise on that for ease of setup.

Me and a buddy are starting a server based company but will be more than that down the road. Anyway, we have our server rack and are working on planning for the Minecraft server and this server will be massive. We plan to try and have 50k+ people always playing (This will be WAY down the road). But I need to know what kind of CPU's I should run for the servers, Should I run multiple servers and connect them via Bungee or something else?, Should I run multiple CPU motherboard with multiple servers?, I need way more help because I've been doing a lot of research and reading and constantly seeing different opinions etc. HELP! lol.

Budget (1000$ USD): Country: USA Games, Minecraft. Other details, needs to be power efficient with a powerful cooler (heat is dreadful here) I host a Minecraft server on a Kindle Fire 8 (10th gen) and will need an upgrade SOON I have around 20 clients now, but in the last month we have gained seven new members so seeing as I'm hitting the limits of this custom-cooled tablet (92mm pc fan drawing heat away from the CPU) Here are your requirements (note this Minecraft server is enormous to me and this upgrade is scary so please be kind I'm already facing 2 days of downtime to make this happen) The data this server holds is mission-critical to this server running I run nearly 24/7 and downtime is to be avoided here 500 GB should be acceptable as I run without mods and our world file is at 150MB right now) (redundancy is needed here) AMD or Intel I don't care a bit so long as there's little downtime WIFI is a nice to have as I run locally and need both a wired and wireless connection (for redundancy) ddr4 or ddr5 should work (32 / 64GB ram more is better) I have a battery backup with 1.2kwhs (1200 watt-hours) so that's taken care of! I do have an RX 5500 4GB (non-XT) I could use for a video output I do not run a Realm I run a Minecraft world, and then that world is set to public and people join it it's dead simple and it's set to friends only so I can control who joins that world Hosting through a cloud service is not a option for me

Hello Everyone, As of September 8th my main server has been hacked. I live in a house-hold. I run this server for 2 different gaming servers. I am asking for some serious help. I don't know what to do. I have Windows Server 2022 Datacenter(Desktop Experience) installed. I was using PC Manager the free edition from Microsoft. I guess it didn't help because the server got hacked and they changed the Login and I was unable to access my server. I had to actually take the hard drive out and put it into another server as a secondary drive to browse the files on it. Finding in the "Downloads" Directory there were some files downloaded that I never downloaded. It was on September 8th. That is how I know that it got hacked. I am un-sure what Antivirus/Firewall to use. My home desktop uses ESET Smart Security. I would use ESET Server Security but I don't want to pay an arm and leg for their service so I need something open source that is free right now if that is even possible. I have tried to Google my way around to finding a Antivirus/Firewall for my server but I have had no luck. I am also un-sure how the hacker even hacked my server. If anyone might know of a way to figure out how I can check to see how my server got hacked that would be a huge plus as I have been struggling with that as well. Much help is applied right now. Thanks so much, -HomeAdmin247.

Hello, I have a family member that has made one of his rooms set up as a game room. Set up with four Xboxes and small TV's for each. His networking, luckily, is in the same room. I've been the one actually dabbling in networking and server stuff. I have an old Dell OptiPlex that has 3 hard drive slots (1 parity drive), 12 core Xeon E5-2695 v2, 128gb ECC DDR3 with a 2.5gb pcie network port. I plan on using TrueNas and LANCache in a docker container. Is LANCache able to support Xbox games/updates? Is there a possibly better application for this niche project?

Hello everyone This is my first time building a homeserver. I'm building a server with i9900k and Asus z390-f motherboard(bought them second hand for 250$).corsaircx600 600w 80+ bronze PSU. This Nas is mainly for family use. We already have 1TB of memories(picture and videos). And I want stability and redundancy more than speed. Have decided to go with TrueNas scale as I want to run Minecraft server(also I'm more used to Debian). And maybe some apps in docker. My problems are: 1. I don't know which HDDs to buy.(was gonna go with 2 ironwolf 8TB) but it doesn't sound right. 2. Should I go for a second hand case for this? And what should I be looking for. 3. Also just want to make sure if going TrueNas scale is a good choice? Also is there anything I should keep in mind building the server? I would appreciate getting some advice...

Hello good people. I recently bought my apartment. Right now I am looking to build a Nas to edit videos directly of of it, Build my own Router/WAP/SWITCH and also get into Smart Home. I have no idea about these things. I want to build something thats future proof and reliable. I would prefer for all of this to be ONE SYSTEM. The DIY part is really important to me in this regard. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Hey! I am playing a bit with a x3550 m2 7946 server I got and for some reason this morning it doesn’t seems to be able to see the drives in the front bays. I was trying to install Debian and the only storage it found was the USB stick I used for installation. Going back to the BIOS, into System settings, there is no Storage option and I can’t seem to find the drives anywhere else. When removing and reinserting the drives, the green LED flashes a bit. Disk 0 also flashes a couple of time while System X is starting but nothing afterwards. Let me know if you get anything from that Thanks!

my budget Is 1k but I need a server that can run fivem or Minecraft servers at relatively good speeds and I need it to have 5 gig networking minimum
