QNAP's new TS-x70 series is one of the first off-the-shelf 10 GbE compatible pedestal NAS solutions, (10 GbE is usually reserved for rackmount models) The TS-x70 series has 3 models(TS-470, TS-670 and TS-870) with 4, 6 and 8 drive bays respectively. By default the units are shipped with four 1 GbE NIC's which can be upgraded to 10 GbE fiber using a upgrade kit. According to QNAP the system should be able to provide speeds of up to 450 MBps read and 423 MBps write using the 4 GbE NIC's in link-aggregation. This speed was achieved in a standard windows environment, though QNAP did not say what kind of test it was (sequential or non sequential data) The 3 new systems have the following specs: TS-870: 8-drive tower unit, Dual-Core Intel® 2.6 GHz Processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 4x Gigabit LAN ports, 10GbE ready, supports SATA 6Gbps hard drives/ SSD, hard drives hot-swappable, 2x USB 3.0 port, HDMI port; TS-670: 6-drive tower unit, Dual-Core Intel® 2.6 GHz Processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 4x Gigabit LAN ports, 10GbE ready, supports SATA 6Gbps hard drives/ SSD, hard drives hot-swappable, 2x USB 3.0 port, HDMI port; TS-470: 4-drive tower unit, Dual-Core Intel® 2.6 GHz Processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 4x Gigabit LAN ports, 10GbE ready, supports SATA 6Gbps hard drives/ SSD, hard drives hot-swappable, 2x USB 3.0 port, HDMI port. As you can see, excluding the amount of bays, they all have the same specs. The TS-x70's are fully compatible with QNAP's expansion units (REXP-1200U-RP / REXP-1600U-RP) which will allow you to expand your NAS with more drive bays. Amsterdam Internet Exchange members support expansion to the United States. 123 of the members voted in favour of the expansion, 102 where against and 14 chose not to vote. The reason for the large amount of members to vote against the expansion is the patriot act which would allow the US Gov. to access all the data. AMS-IX is the second largest internet exchange in the world and is, unlike its US counterparts, a non-profit organisation. AMS-IX already has datacenters outside the Netherlands in Hong Kong and in the Caribbean. The vote was held over the internet as 80% of the members are not Dutch. Members include large ISP's like AT&T, UPC, and Vodafone, most large European datacenters and large multinationals like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix (and a lot more) Source(s) / Full article: https://www.ams-ix.net/newsitems/104 https://tweakers.net/nieuws/91551/nipte-meerderheid-leden-stemt-voor-uitbreiding-ams-ix-naar-vs.html

Sony's new PlayStation 4 hardware will sell at a loss. This was confirmed by Sony senior vice president Masayasu Ito. Eurogamer sources speak of a $60 loss for every $399 system sold, though Ito did not confirm that number. Sony, as stated in the quote, counts on games and PS plus subscriptions to make the PlayStation 4 profitable. Microsoft already stated earlier this month that they will make a profit on their $499 XBOX One hardware. The California State Senate has approved a test program for electronic license plates. The trail will be limited the 0.5% of all the registered vehicles in California and will and no before 2017. (License plate could be changed remotely) People have mixed feelings about the trail program, they like the fact that it can easily be listed as stolen but they are concerned about their privacy. Because if they can change the plate on the go then they can also track it. A group of researchers from Georgetown University and the US Naval Research Laboratory say it's easier to identify TOR users than they believed. A important thing to point out though is the "By Realistic Adversaries" part of the papers title. With realistic adversaries they mean governments and ISP's as they needed direct access to internet exchanges or ISP's autonomous systems to trace the users. The paper also pointed out that using BitTorrent on TOR makes you drastically easier to trace. New Snowden documents relieved that in 2011 US spy agencies conducted 231 offensive cyber attacks. These are covert attacks carried out by US agency's on (foreign)high profile computer networks. The goals of these attacks are mainly data collection and sabotage (like Stuxnet). This information was found in the recently leaked "Black Budget" that lists how much money is being spend on data collection, data analysis, management, facilities and support and data processing and exploitation. The "Black Budget" document was leaked to the Washington post by Snowden. Over a year ago Google applied for around 100 gTLD's (Generic top-level-domain), these can be bought by company's so they have their own top level domain name, so instead of .com you could have .google. Most of Google's requests where conventional domains with dots in between the TLD and the SLD. But some of Google's requested domains where dotless, "Dotless domain names are those that consist of a single label (e.g., http://example, or mail@Example)." These requests came as a surprise to ICANN (the corporation behind all domain) who then started to look into the plausibility of dotless domain. And today they announced the outcome of that investigation: The reasoning behind this decision boils down to support and security, most DNS servers wont support it and would need get special updates and even then their would have been security issues. The new Sparc M6 CPU has just been unveiled by Oracle during the Hot Chips conference that is being held at Stanford university. The Sparc series, for those who don't know, is a CPU series that is designed for oracles own high end enterprise server and database solutions. The M6 features 12 cores and 96 threads, that is double the amount of its predecessor, the M5. (Old vs New) The most remarkable upgrade on the new Sparc is probably it's scalability. Because now one system can support up to 96 sockets.... That's 1,152 cores and 9,216 threads in a single system using oracles own interconnect. (Example of the Bixby interconnect) Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/08/28/oracle_sparc_m6_bixby_interconnect/ http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9241970/New_SPARC_M6_chip_runs_Oracle_software_faster?pageNumber=1

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is developing a 110-core processor. They announced it during the Hot Chips conference that is being held at Stanford university. The experimental chip focuses on decreasing internal traffic on the CPU, this is achieved by replacing the cache with a shared memory pool. The CPU also has the ability to predict data movement which reduces the number of required cycles for data movement. AMD and Intel are no longer working on very high core count CPU's because of the high data overhead they create, this new development should tackle that problem. After receiving a lot of positive feedback on my first tutorial I decided I should make another one. But I'm having some problems with selecting the subject, so please vote on the one you would like to see, if you miss any please tell me! Please note that I am no expert on any of these systems yet, most will be new for me, so it will take a while (at leas a month) to write as it will be a lot of new stuff for me, but that should also make the tutorial easier as I wont skip things like some of the guru's might do because they expect you to know things. :P For those who haven't seen it, this is my first tutorial: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/33510-how-to-install-and-setup-flexraid-on-your-windows-storage-system/ PS: poll result will not be decisive, just want to get a feeling of what you guys want :P

hey guys, I'm looking for a new keyboard, at the moment I have a G15 but I would like to go mechanical, though I don't know which switch or board is best for me. I will mainly use it for normal typing (Text and code) but I also game occasionally (FPS). Keywise: I don't want them to be to loud, but I do want tactile feedback, and not to heavy typing as i type a lot. (would that be browns??) boardwise: It needs to have macro support with good software. It needs to have a numpad. It needs to have simple media keys (volume stop play next prec mute) And it needs to be back-lit . Budget is roughly 150 EURO (200 dollar)
