Kingston V300 SSD as a replacement to old laptop 320GB SATA2 HDD?
Potatomato replied to Potatomato's topic in Storage Devices
I'm just looking for a cheap SSD that will perform significantly better than my current laptop HDD. So it doesn't matter to me if its the worst performing just as long as it performs better, maybe 2-3x better. Is the write edurance also bad? The next cheapest would be Sandisk Ultra 2 120GB SSD @ 3250PHP or 73USD (Additional 320PHP or 7USD) Crucual M550 128GB SSD @ 3250PHP or 73USD (Additional 320PHP or 7USD) Samsung 840 Evo 120GB SSD @ 3850PHP or 86USD (Additional 1050PHP or 24USD) -
Hi Everyone! Kingston V300 SSD 120GB is on sale right now at 2,800.00PHP or 63.00USD I am thinking of buying it to replace my 6 year old laptop's 320GB HDD (whose failure is imminent). The laptop's HDD controller is SATA2 I am also aware of Kingston's bait and switch thing which meant slower performance. So my question is, is the V300 still fast enough to consider as a replacement for a SATA2 laptop? Attached is the screenshot crystaldiskmark results for 1GB. Thanks!

btw @2sysel2 & @kuddlesworth9419, I'll still be keeping the boot ssd & HDD cache because writes are quite stable (not >10GB)
-
@2sysel2, after applying the ssd optimization. my writes have been quite stable, it gains around 2-3gb when playing games. @kuddlesworth9419 went mia,... we would never really know what he meant. anyway, thanks guys! I wouldnt have figured it out without you.
-
@2sysel2, okay. I got confused by some media converter programs have their own cache to store files that they need to work with... Not sure if I understood this correctly, so the media converter program (installed in SSD) has a cache (probably in SSD also). When it is converting media, the program will cache the multi-used and high-value data only leaving the low-value data (video files used) uncached. So in general, none of the media used is cached, but the program itself will run faster because it cached some of its parts (sounds like data cannibalism or something)? In other news, I happened to stumble on this article on SSD optimization http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-performance-tweak,2911.html After doing everything, I noticed that the total host writes have become stable and no longer increasing! Because before applying the tweaks, every system reboot would add 2-4GBs of writes to the SSD. I'll keep monitoring to see how the total writes changes depending on what I do.
-
@kuddlesworth9419, aw, okay. how do you find and reroute the caching folders of each program? @2sysel2, what worries me is that some games that I am currently playing consumes like 20-40 GBs, if SRT caches the entire folder and keeps erasing to make room for other stuff then that's where the problem begins.
-
@kuddlesworth9419, okay, I kind-of get your point on the few TB's per week. It's really distressing because the SSD can only have so much TB of writes. Mine's lifetime is 72TB of writes. As mentioned in the previous post, I will continue to monitor the number of writes. If it doesn't ease, I'm going to remove the SSD cache and do a system reformat to get back that partition. It kind of sad if I'll remove the cache because I could have gone with a cheaper board maybe an H81 board instead of a H97 board. or maybe I should have opted for the bit more expensive board with m.sata so that I could replicate @2sysel2 setup.
-
@2sysel2, 1.6TB of writes for 8 months. according to kingston's website, the lifetime is 54TB. if we extrapolate your data... that's 0.2 TB per month with a total lifetime of 270 months or 22.5 years. which I guess is not bad. I tried looking up my SSD's information in CrystalDisk, total reads and total erased are not showing up ... how do i make them show up? also the power-on hours is weird ... I've been using this computer for like a week now with about 5 hours per day, why does it say 9 hours? But yikes! already 400GB and it is not 1 month old yet! but maybe this is because I built a new system and had a couple of reformats and installations. I will continue monitoring this, if it doesn't ease ... I guess I will remove the SSD cache and do a complete SSD reformat just to get the whole partition back.

@kuddlesworth9419, 1. how did you know that you wrote few TB to your SSD? 2. so your media is in the HDD and the converter is in the SSD, and accessing the media in HDD will trigger caching which results to the TBs of writes? - did I understood this correctly?
-
@kuddlesworth9419, I plan to put programs and OS in SSD and games and other media in HDD. so the games that are most frequently used will be cached and I don't have to keep reinstalling games because of size limitation in SDD why do you prefer to do that?

Hello everyone! After a very tedious process, I managed to turn my SSD into a windows boot drive and a cache drive for a 1TB HDD with intel smart response technology (SRT). so what are your thoughts on this setup? like, is it okay for a balanced system, or is it bad for the ssd, is it not worth it? etc etc. Thanks!!

Is the EVGA 500B enough for Core i5 4460 & GTX 750 Ti

@ShadowCaptain ok thanks! -

@ShadowCaptain re SSD caching, why not? I plan to use the SSD as a boot drive and store everything else in the 1TB HDD. w/ SSD caching, the most frequently accessed files/ programs will run very fast, I think its a huge advantage/ great feature to have. re getting a better GPU, okay thanks! -

@ShadowCaptain, I plan to use intel smart response technology (SRT)/SSD caching for the 1TB WD drive so I need a H87 or H97 motherboard at least. I chose the H97 so that I don't have to update the bios.
